Hairspray (2007) Damn, where did THIS movie come from? It was really, really good! Probably the best movie based on a broadway musical based on a non-musical movie yet! (Take THAT, Producers '05). A great ensemble with some great dance numbers, reminiscent of the musicals of yesteryear... what's not to love? 9/10 Good to hear. It will be New Line Cinema's first title in high-definition.

I mean, I'd say the original is probably one of the strangest, creepiest things he's done because normally when you watch a Waters movie you're prepared for some outlandish stuff, but this was his family movie and everyone was eerily happy that it was frightening.

You have to see the original HAIRSPRAY, Zap. Good stuff.
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005)
Moments of brilliance mixed with moments of sheer boredom. Found this one way too long and hard to sit through.
6/10

Funny thing, Heineken, David Yates said he felt all the other films were too long. I may have been overboard with my rating originally, but I still think it's the 2nd best. The problem with the Potter movies seems to be now that none of the directors since Cuaron understand the kids. "Prisoner of Azkaban" had some great transitory scenes, where the guys are growing older but not yet quite old enough to be...I dunno...qualified or something. The 4th film painted the kids as mere adults in waiting and nothing more while the 5th makes them just action heroes.
As for "Hairspray", see the original, Zap. It's downright awesome.
Go (Doug Liman) -- three stories that run parallel to each other in a pretty funny story really about how much stupid stuff we young people do and how we get outta it. B+.

ORDER OF THE PHOENIX SPOILERS ABOUND
I don't know, I just kept thinking more and more about Order of the Phoenix, and I think it's the weakest of the Potter movies. I know a movie can change and leave out a lot from the book and still be great, but it felt as though they were relying heavily on the audience having read the book. Lots of important information was left out, and in effect some scenes came across as filler material (for instance, the firing of Trelawney). This was confirmed by my best friend, who had not read the book and was very confused with the movie. You could say he should have read the book, but honestly, you shouldn't have to.
I'm not saying at all that the movie was bad - my initial 8/10 rating remains intact. But if it were, say, just as long as the last one, (which would probably be ample time to throw those important tidbits in), it would have been loads better.
By the way, the latest book... it's a great read!

You know, there's a scene in the third season of "Arrested Development" where the Warden is testing out his screenplay with a bunch of 3rd graders, who were merely reciting instead of delivering...that's how I felt the first two films are. And you're right, book seven is a great read.

It was the Columbus efforts that got me into the Harry Potter series in the first place. I was very apathetic until I caught the Sorceror's Stone out of curiosity, and really enjoyed it. True, the kids weren't that great, but what're you gonna do? They were kids. And it's good to know they got better over the years.

THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951)
A scientific research team in the Arctic discover a spacecraft and it's pilot buried in the ice. They take the frozen alien back to their station, where it wreaks havoc when it's accidentally thawed out. Like the great 80's John Carpenter version, this movie was adapted from the John Campbell story, but because of budget and technical limitations, it has to rely far more on atmosphere than Carpenter did. The creature here isn't a shapeshifting nightmare, but more of a large man-in-makeup ala Frankenstein's monster. I've seen it a couple of times, and the 50's version isn't bad, but given a choice, I'll take the 80's version, which I still think is one of the all-time greatest alien invasion films. And this version doesn't have great lines like, "I don't know what it is, but it's weird and it's pissed off.".

MANHATTAN (1979)
Woody Allen is his usual neurotic nebbish, and his self-deprecating one-liners are pretty much always funny, as he's the master of that kind of thing. The rest of the cast are also very good from Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep to a very young Mariel Hemingway.
The real star of this film however is New York City as seen through Gordon Willis' cinematography. As far as Allen films go, it's far from my favorite, but Willis' black and white photography is almost dreamlike and a real loveletter to the Big Apple, if you'll allow me the cheesiness.
6.5/10 - Movie 10/10 - Cinematography
