National Treasure: Book of Secrets- Can't keep up with the fun and adventure of the original one. After starting fast, it goes nowhere for awhile. Also, it wasn't that exotic. There's 5 or 6 locales, but they hover in the same place for either too long or too short. Weird pacing on the movie. Also, not enough on the titular Book! It's only in the movie for a little more than five minutes. Through all the problems, it's still a good movie with some nice adventure action but there's better movies at the theater. B-.

THE JUNGLE BOOK (1967) The last animated feature to be personally overseen by Walt Disney also features two of the greatest songs to ever appear in a Disney feature, "The Bare Necessities" and "I Wan'na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)". Memorable characters, great songs and classic animation. Even my 2 1/2 year old daughter paid attention to most of it. 7.5/10

Rob Zombie's re-Halloween.
Pretty good for a remake, not better than the original.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (Jake Kasden) -- lots of laughs all around, I think this was the best of the Apatow offerings this year. Of course, I didn't much like "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" and I wish that Jonah Hill kid would shut up. Nice to see the always brilliant John C. Reily in a leading role. B.
The Simpsons Movie (David Silverman) -- I really really like this movie. Whatever I said in my review.
Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End (Gore Verbinski) -- Like all the others, it's overlong, overly plotted, and tedious. It's not that great of a series, and film three caters to the stupidity and overall ridiculousness of the others. I mean, it's fun, but it's empty. B.
Casino Royale (Martin Campbell) -- anyone who says Daniel Craig is the best Bond is a moron because he's still playing off the Connery model. That doesn't stop him from being the best since the aforementioned and also making one of the best Bond films since the 60s. A-.
Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas (Scott Lew) -- okay, I saw it in the middle of the day on Comedy Central, but I enjoyed it and I've always liked that Patrick Fugit anyway. Sure it's a tad predicatble and overly aspiring, but whatever. B.
Ratatouille (Brad Bird) -- Another great movie. Probably's going to get the animation Oscar. And rightfully so. A.

ROCKY (1976)
The best underdog story bar-none. One of those films where the stars aligned and everything came together beautifully. If you can watch this and not be inspired, check your pulse.
10/10
ROCKY BALBOA (2006)
Probably has less actual boxing than any of the previous entries in the series, but also gets back to the heart and emotion of the original. Stallone does away with the over the top cartoon-type characters that have inhabited most of the sequels and instead gives us a story about people that are more realistic. IMO, the best of the sequels and a nice bookend to the original film.
8/10

Juno (Jason Reitman) -- One of the best offerings this year. A. On that, we agree. The Lost Weekend (1945, Billy Wilder) A dark, depressing look into the life of an alcoholic. It's a little dated, and probably my least favorite Wilder flick thus far, but still worth seeing. 8/10 Seraphim Falls (2007, David Von Ancken) This film stands out in its cinematography. My God, does this independent Western look good. Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan are two odd choices for a film like this, but they pull their weight. Brosnan has a bit of a rough time with the accent thing, but overall he does alright, and it's an enjoyable flick. 8/10

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007)
"Wow". That's the only word my wife and I could muster when this movie was over. Two hours of almost unrelenting butt-clenching tension. Javier Bardem plays evil-incarnate better than almost anyone I've ever seen on-screen. He makes Rutger Hauer's John Ryder from THE HITCHER look like an amateur. And might even give Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter a run for his money. The kind of villain where you constantly fear for the lives of every other character that happens to be on-screen with him because you're just anticipating when, not "if", he'll snap and kill them. Kudos to Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones who also do fine work here. The Coen brothers return to fighting shape with this one. Now my second favorite film by them, after FARGO. It sags just a little in the second half and the very ending left me a bit cold, but damn, it's near-perfect.
9.5/10

Eastern Promises (David Cronenburg) -- oh Viggo, how good of you to shake off that Aragorn element. And in another intense, good thriller from Cronenburg. B+.

Unhinged-Gets a little creepy here and there, but too padded to get a whole lot else done. imdb.com/title/tt0180274/usercomments-50Beauty Queen Butcher-Manages to put together two completely different halves, both cheesy, and form the good and bad parts of the film. imdb.com/title/tt0289858/usercomments-3Sleepover Nightmare-Fast and fun slasher, contains nothing new we've seen before but still comes out watchable. imdb.com/title/tt0448123/usercomments-9Scalps-Some fun moments here and there, but ultimately way too short to be anything other than derivitive. imdb.com/title/tt0086248/usercomments-31Black Christmas (74)-Has a really creepy killer, but frankly, way too padded out and filled with irritating moments to be anything else. imdb.com/title/tt0071222/usercomments-284Black Christmas (06)-Tons of fun, gory, brutal, action-packed and filled with lots of good stuff, making this one highly surprising. imdb.com/title/tt0454082/usercomments-237Frenzy-Nice to see Hitch throwing in some sleaze here and there, but too slow-going with the mystery to get much else out. imdb.com/title/tt0068611/usercomments-137

Hairspray (Adam Shankman) -- another great '07 offering. Best musical of the year. Sweeny Todd can't touch it. Though they are vastly different. A.
