Watched on Saturday:
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST (2006)
Aarrrghh!!! A series of films based on a Disney amusement park ride?? Shiver me timbers! You'll walk the plank for such blasphemy! Yeah, and fun movies they are too. My major qualm would be that each is a bit too long for it's own good, but that's a quibble. Johnny Depp runs away with every scene he's in as Capt. Jack Sparrow. Keira Knightley is nice eye candy and the bad guys, Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and then Bill Nighy as Davy Jones are both excellent as well. Great stunts and special effects and a rollicking sense of adventure while never taking themselves too seriously. These are probably as close as we're getting to Indiana Jones type adventure flicks nowadays. Just good old fashioned popcorn movies. Bring on POTC: AT WORLD'S END.
8/10 each
On Sunday:
SHOOTER (2007)
Part BOURNE IDENTITY and part RAMBO. I thought it was great! An action flick that features fairly believeable characters and that doesn't require you to check your brain at the door. Suspenseful and packed with great action scenes.
Mark Wahlberg continues his streak. I never would've though that the former Marky Mark would someday star in films that I'd be interested in seeing. And an Oscar nomination? I would've smacked you on the head for even suggesting it. Hmm... I wonder what the Funky Bunch are doing now.
8/10

Frankenstein (31)- This isn't the novel. At all. I would know, I just finished reading the book. However, that really here separates any boundaries between book and film and creates for a great movie experience where anything becomes possible. A+.

Female Vampire-Well, at least now I can say that I own a porno film in my collection, and if this is the softcore version, what's the hardcore one like? imdb.com/title/tt0069745/usercomments-30Devil in the Flesh 2-Really only worthwhile for the extreme sleaze and a really creepy final showdown, but there's much better ones out there. imdb.com/title/tt0217086/usercomments-29The Thing Below-Really lackluster creature feature, especially from someone who knows how to make them. imdb.com/title/tt0382443/usercomments-24Flesh for the Beast-Man, was this a gory, creepy and sleazy film. Really a lot of fun. imdb.com/title/tt0372921/usercomments-28Don't Panic-I really should've seen this one before Mansion of Madness, a really entertaining American slasher done in Mexico. imdb.com/title/tt0193879/usercomments-11The Funhouse-Spends too much time in the carnival before getting down to business, but what excellent business it is. imdb.com/title/tt0082427/usercomments-92Reign of the Gargoyles-A little light on the gargoyles, but trades them for some really impressive War-film style action. imdb.com/title/tt0969322/usercomments-1Silent Hill-A little trimming here and there and this moves up from the overrated to the decent but entertaining venue. imdb.com/title/tt0384537/usercomments-1619Tarantula-The way to do a giant spider film, loads of cheese and plenty of cool moments. imdb.com/title/tt0048696/usercomments-59

Casino Royale (2006) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 10/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10 HD Audio LPCM - Reference There is minor noise throughout the picture. I didn't find that it was tweaked, nor had a bad digital processed type look. Color reproduction is excellent & accurate, not to mention skintones. This was something that I looked for most, mainly because of Pete's take over at High-def-digest. Contrast did look a bit tweaked which made some areas of the transfer soft. This is barely a complaint as most of the film is either shot in very light or dark locations. I really wanted to give the video transfer a lower rating but it seriously looks too good & it is overall, very, very consistent throughout which is the highlight to what I expect from all HD transfers. The Dolby Digital track is agressive, much more so than I thought it would be. All speakers get a nice workout but sometimes surrounds can drown out the center whenever action scenes approach. This is easily the best sounding DD track I've heard from Sony yet. The LPCM on the hand suffers just the 1 issue I had with the DD track, vocals & action do not intermix well but the trade off is a mix that not only increases the db output, but also fine tunes each channel to perfection. The soundstage is very dynamic giving it a pleasing 360 feel instead of the DD pingpong effect. Each channel is crisp & clear + the LFE rocks. I don't know what more this track could offer.. unless there was a hidden 7.1 easter egg track. Overall, a very impressive transfer on both fronts, excellent film, & worth all the hype.

MEAN STREETS (1973)
Hadn't watched this one in about ten years, but thought I'd give it another shot. It's still not my favorite Scorsese, far from it, but it does have some good scenes and interesting characters. Especially standing out are Scorsese regulars, Harvey Keitel as the morally confused Charlie and Robert De Niro as Johnny Boy, a train wreck just waiting to happen. The film itself is as raw as the characters, but you definitely see the potential for greatness that was to come with future flicks like TAXI DRIVER and GOODFELLAS.
6.5/10

Children of Men - I've made my decision: THIS was my favorite film of 2006. The Departed comes in second. And watching it again pissed me off even more that Pan's Labyrinth walked away with the Oscar for cinematography. The Academy is truly insane. I mean, I've never seen long shots done like that before. It was fantastic! A+

That Thing You Do! -- Tom Hanks's feature film debut is a pretty much accurate portrait of the 60s between the end of the British Invasion and the release of "Sgt. Pepper" (of couse, being born in '86 I just get all this from music history books). You have one of your many bands playing that poppy fun stuff and the film kind of reflects that. No, there might not be a lot of depth or human meaning, but it is a fun movie, very entertaining, and they play that song so much that you'll be singing it after turning off the DVD player. There are loads of parallels to The Beatles as well as other '60s bands. Whatever it is -- a piece of nostalgia, a portrait of the times -- I really really enjoyed it. A-.
