Gosford Park - Another film more worthy of the 2001 Best Picture Oscar than A Beautiful Mind. I thought it was beautifully shot and well written. My one complaint would be how incredibly high-brow it is for a comedy. 90% of the jokes went right over my head. But at least I had other things to appreciate, and it made a fine drama. This was one of Altman's best. A+

Tenenbaums deserved it, Gosford Park was a boring movie.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer- Stanley Kubrick called this film "unfilmable." I read Roger Ebert's review of this film. He's read the novel twice, and he gave the film four stars. I have never read the novel either, but after seeing this film, I'm pretty sure Stanley Kubrick would be proud of how this film turned out. Plus, the ending has to be seen in order to be believed. A+.

The last movie I saw in the theater was Hannibal Rising, which I quite enjoyed.
The last movie I watched in general was Saw III. Which was better than I'd expected.

This was one of Altman's best. A+ I have a beef with the writing for that film mainly because it took the Oscar that shoulda gone to "Tenenbaums". I've felt that way about certain movies before. I was bitter against "Hustle & Flow" for a while - in particular, the song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" for taking Best Song last year (yeah, a rap song about the exploitation of women is better than a tragic song about being stuck in your own social traps? I don't think so.) I also have a bit of a problem with A Beautiful Mind for taking so many Oscars it didn't deserve (such as direction, writing, and Picture). I don't hate the movie (in fact, I really liked it), but there were so many better movies that year. It's almost like watching Capote or Ray take Best Picture. Enough of that rant. I should mention I got another job at a movie theater (call me institutionalized -- it's in my blood now), and between a 40-minute break and a good half hour after work, I caught most of Blades of Glory - Man, oh man... you never realize how great a team Will Ferrell and Jon Heder could make, but when they're on the ice, well... that's comedic GOLD right there. B Note: This wasn't so obvious when he first started out, considering Napoleon Dynamite was a flavor-of-the-month movie, but it's a safe guess now that Jon Heder isn't going anywhere. And after watching this movie, I'm sure that's not necessarily a bad thing. I also saw the first 10 minutes of Meet the Robinsons, and that looks promising. I'll have more on that soon enough.

Mission: Impossible -- I think that this is the best of the series. A complicated plot that makes you actually pay attention (really, it's not that hard to figure out, you just have to pay attention), brilliant framing and use of smoke, great performances all around, and really tense action sequences. Sure, the ending chase is kind of ridiculous and throws out the fact that most of what came beforehand could POSSIBLY be achieved (just avoided a pun there), but it's still a cool action sequence. Avoids the overt silliness of film two and the J.J. Abrams style of let's throw all sorts of things into a movie and maybe answer only one of the questions types of filmmaking. Yes, McGuffin's are cool, but not when a movie has about 42 of them, Mr. Abrams! A-.

Dead Silence- A good concept, good acting, but overall, the script is ridden with plot holes and the end was amazingly rushed. Better writing would improve the film. B-.

Stay Alive-For a PG-13 film, this was actually really good, though that could be just giddiness over the fact that, for once, they paid attention to history. imdb.com/title/tt0441796/usercomments-244Tentacles-Fun and enjoyable giant creature feature, and a really good Italian Jaws rip-off. imdb.com/title/tt0076809/usercomments-45And now, for the main course: Godzilla Raids Again-The American "Film of Life" video aside, fun sequel and a spectacular last half of the film. imdb.com/title/tt0048127/usercomments-26King Kong vs. Godzilla-Would've been in the upper echelon of the series even if the movie had just been the final fight between the two. imdb.com/title/tt0056142/usercomments-73Godzilla vs. The Thing-Utterly, simply and unquestionably the greatest one in the series after the original. imdb.com/title/tt0058379/usercomments-29Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster-While nothing would've topped the previous one, this is still a classic in the series. imdb.com/title/tt0058544/usercomments-21Godzilla vs. Monster Zero-Campy, yes, and less serious, but it's got it's moments of fun. imdb.com/title/tt0059346/usercomments-37Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster-More monster time would've been better, but the low budget ruins most of the film's positives. imdb.com/title/tt0060464/usercomments-38Son of Godzilla-Fun for the kiddies, but a chore for the adults to get through. imdb.com/title/tt0061856/usercomments-26Destroy All Monsters-For sheer spectacle at what is attempted, there's nothing wrong with this one, and one of the series' bright spots. imdb.com/title/tt0063172/usercomments-48Godzilla's Revenge-Cheap and disposable, like a greatest hits without showing the good fighting done before. imdb.com/title/tt0064373/usercomments-37Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster-Great monster villain aside, hard to really get into this, which is mostly the kids' fault. imdb.com/title/tt0067148/usercomments-60Godzilla vs. Gigan-A fun, action-packed monster show slightly hurt by a meandering beginning. imdb.com/title/tt0068371/usercomments-34Godzilla vs. Megalon-Mainly watchable for it's hilarity and great monster battle, but nothing else is worth mentioning. imdb.com/title/tt0070122/usercomments-50Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla-The introduction of the greatest foe in the series, in one of the most underrated entries in the series. imdb.com/title/tt0071565/usercomments-29Terror of Mechagodzilla-Ends the series on a really good effort, and is highly enjoyable. imdb.com/title/tt0073373/usercomments-22

Shooter - An entertaining popcorn flick, but not much more. B-
Airplane II: The Sequel - I expected less than what I got. I found it to be a solid comedy. It's far from the classic the first one was, but it definitely had some laugh-out-loud moments, including William Shatner. If you liked the first one, this one is at least worth a look. B

Frankenstein -- classic B-movie. So what if it doesn't follow the book nearly at all? Neither does "The Bourne Identity." Or "Children of Men." Iconic performace by Karloff unfortunatley, it's really too short so there's kind of this feeling that everything has to get rushed rushed rushed in order to finish. Amazing photography though. B+.
