Mrs. Miniver- I think it was more of a symbol of the war as opposed to being a great fiom today, meaning I don't think it's survived the test of time. Still good, though. B+.
Black Snake Moan- A lot of critics said the film falls apart when there aren't scenes with music, but it doesn't. The music is great and the rest is great too. However, it is weaker compared to Hustle and Flow. B+.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Fantastic documentary about one of the most influential men of the 20th century, and his ongoing legal battle with Richard Nixon. Nicely edited, great interviews, and strangely relevant. Without being a direct attack against the current administration, it serves as a much better criticism on it than, say, Fahrenheit 9/11. A

You know, in Zap's defense on "Zodiac", the investigation towards the killer did last 35 years and went unfulfilled. Fincher sez that he realizes that it's really long but he could never figure out what to cut. I mean, I liked the movie a lot, not as much as Zap or frankenjohn, but I can understand what they're saying. Also, it's completley different from any CSI episode because it actually has, oh, I don't know, substance and not just flash and glamour or Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Spirit of the Beehive -- quiet little film about a little girl who believes that Frankenstein's monster really lives in an abandoned sheep shelter behind her house. Even though I watched it on a crappy VHS transfer with less-than-stellar subtitles, it's still an engrossing movie and beautifully photographed, despite the fact the cinematographer was going blind. I mean, for a shitty VHS transfer, there are still beautiful images. Guillermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" shares many similarities with this film. But I say try looking for it on DVD, which is a Criterion release which probably means that the look and sound would be loads better. A.

This must be really great then.

The Host- A fine Korean monster movie, at some parts very funny, others dramatic. There are a few scares and even some surprising twists. It's probably the best Korean produced effort since "Oldboy." A+.

Cronos -- interesting, bizarre, albeit original horrorish film from del Toro. Even when it goes into the "oh, that's where they're going with it" territory it still manages to be entertaining and creepy. I still prefer "Devil's Backbone" but what can you do? Great performances all around. Federico Luppi is like the Argentinian Christopher Lee and it's strange he was never picked up in the States. Missed a great one there, but alas! There are a lot of questions left unanswered however, and some parts where you're just supposed to assume something I suppose, like how they knew the old man had the device and why suddenly Ron Perlman went from being a worker drone to an asshole without any sort of real transition. B.

Wild Hogs
You know, I shouldn't be calling this a film. It's a product, plain and simple. That being said, I really didn't give a shit. It was funny. It does not enlighten one bit, but you better believe it entertains. I was laughing more than I wasn't. Glad to see John Travolta coming back (and let's face it, in a movie that's not winning any Oscars, Travolta sure has a lot of charisma). I also accept this film as an apology from Tim Allen, for every movie he made in 2005 and 2006. Maybe not enough to forgive him for Christmas with the Kranks, but oh well. Also, this is probably the best movie I've seen with Martin Lawrence in it. William H. Macy was just funny. Overall, it's a product, but it is an entertaining product nonetheless. B-

A+. Thanks for the quick review! I really want to see this one. Last night I was forced to sit through Crank. It's kind of like an extended music video. I did not like it. 2/10

CLERKS II (2006)
I can probably do without the musical number set to the Jackson's "ABC", but overall I laughed my ass off. The SILENCE OF THE LAMBS homage by Jay is brilliant. And the LOTR geeks vs the STAR WARS geeks scene is pretty damn funny and something that you just know happens all the time. I didn't think Kevin Smith could pull off this one, but it's definitely a worthy sequel and brings nice closure to the Dante & Randall saga. Not counting the animated CLERKS film that's in the works.
8/10
THE NEW WORLD (2005)
So... incredibly... sloooowww.... But it makes up for it by having everyone speak in a monotone. (Yeah, that was sarcasm.) I'm not a huge fan, but even Disney's take on the tale of Pocahontas & John Smith was more, er, animated, than this beautiful but souless effort.
My wife, who's usually a sucker for these kinds of films, made the comment, "I love Period movies, but this shit's pissing me off." That's a direct quote.
Must be a Terrence Malick thing. His last directing effort, THE THIN RED LINE, bored me to tears as well.
2/10

The Swarm-Epic disaster film about bees is a lot of fun, if only to get past the stupidity and plot holes present. imdb.com/title/tt0078350/usercomments-74The Mansion of Madness-My first dip into Mexi horror is a lot more strange than horrific, but that doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. imdb.com/title/tt0068504/usercomments-16The Antichrist-An Italian Exorcist rip-off that's more trashy, sleazy, and, in case you didn't realize it, more entertaining than it's American inspiration. imdb.com/title/tt0071150/usercomments-34Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-How could this fail: Boris Karloff in a dual role alongside A&C at the height of their monster mash-ups? It doesn't. imdb.com/title/tt0045469/usercomments-24Dead Men Walk-Entertaining cheapy about vampires, but too short to really get into it's good parts. imdb.com/title/tt0035784/usercomments-22The Corpse Vanishes-Original story, Bela Lugosi, and a creepy atmosphere somehow doesn't make this one memorable. imdb.com/title/tt0034613/usercomments-35The Invisible Man's Revenge-Radical tone shifts upset really intriguing entry in the series. imdb.com/title/tt0036959/usercomments-13The Invisible Woman-More comedy than horror, but still entertaining enough to warrant a look. imdb.com/title/tt0032637/usercomments-13

American Beauty
This one is at least on my top five. I mean, the title says it all. It's simply a beautiful movie. This was the last great movie of the 90's. A+
