Kotch- Walther Matthau gives on of the nicest, sweetest performances in cinema history. Too bad the the plot isn't as great as his acting (but it's still pretty good). B+.
The Patriot- Roland Emmerich's film of the Revolutionary War suceeds mostly because it doesn't feel like it was directed by Roland Emmerich. However, it still feels to commercial to go above being good. B+.

For Your Consideration- Funny spoof of the Hollywood film industry, but it's Guest's weakest film. B+.
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints- A strong debut from Dito Montiel, based off his rough start growing up in Astoria, Queens. It is also a very realistic film, as the dialogue natrually flows and is a bit reminicent of Altman. B+.

Joshua- It surprised me, these religious movies aren't usually good but this one's pretty good. It's problems are that it drags on too long and challenges the Bible in a way. B-.

Saw a screening of The Number 23 last night. COMPLETE AND UTTER WASTE OF TIME. MOST CLICHE ENDING IN THE WORLD (uh....i don't want to spoil it but it's the classic thriller cop-out, if you know what i mean). HATED, HATED, AND MORE HATED IT!!!!!! 1/10 Is this a love-it-or-hate it movie or something? I gotta say, Phoenix, you are on the complete other end of the spectrum than me. The Number 23After reading the reviews, I can't help but detect an anti-Schumacher air. I disagree with the lot of them. The film is flawed, but enjoyable. When Phoenix made mention of the classic thriller cop-out, I was anticipating the dreaded Fight Club ending, which I must happily say is not the case. It's not original, but entirely plausible. Gotta give props to Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen and Joel Schumacher... not so much the screenwriter, he broke one too many "rules" of screenwriting, which in effect softened the impact the movie should have had. But Schumacher had some nice directorial things he did with it, and both Carrey and Madsen gave great performances. I also find it worth pointing out - usually there's a general correlation between reviews on IMDb and Rottentomatoes (IMDb is usually easier on movies, but not significantly), but in this case... Rottentomatoes: 09% (Only slightly higher than Gigli) IMDb: 7.4 (Higher than some Oscar winning films, including Titanic and Chicago) While I wouldn't dream of placing Number 23 above any Oscar-winning flicks (both of the aforementioned are underrated on IMDb), a 7.4 seems fair. In many ways, I consider it this year's Da Vinci Code. B

SPOILER HERE: While he didn't have multiple personality disorder, he was just plain crazy. And as for plausible, you can't just get clonked on the head and have amnesia for 15 years to cure your own mental illness. If only it were that easy! And the ending with him in jail? Give me a break. Pure cheese.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
Here's one I wish I saw earlier in the year, because Channing Tatum would totally get a Snootchie nomination if I did. He really caught me off guard - I did not expect him to be that good. Other than that, it's a damn good movie, and it comes highly recommended. A-/B+
Casino
Why do I get the feeling that this one is underappreciated? I don't know about you, but it seems to me that this was the Scorsese masterpiece everyone forgot. It was 3 hours long, but it never felt like it was 3 hours long, and who can ask for a better ending than that? Great Scorsese picture, one of his best. I mean, it's up there with his holy trinity (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas), and I wish it would get more love than it does. A+
