Considered one of the worst HD transfers sinse HD, I was surprised that most reviewers picked on this one so bad after I watched it. While not perfect, it is far from being the worst HD title out & I'll add fanboyism has popped its ugly head out from credible reviewers.

DEAD MAN (1995)
Jim Jarmusch film about a man (Johnny Depp) who goes on the run after killing someone in self defense. Probably the strangest western I've ever seen. It's slow paced, which is not necessarily the same as boring. But some scenes do sit there a little longer than needed while others kind of fade in and out. Maybe that's supposed to add to the surreal quality of the whole film, but at 130 minutes, it definitely could have used some editing. Depp adds to his vast catalog of quirky roles and Gary Farmer is excellent as Nobody, a Native American that befriends Depp. Look for many name actors in smaller roles (Lance Henriksen, Michael Wincott) and even brief cameos (Crispin Glover, John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfred Molina, etc.) I was a bit dissapointed in the score by Neil Young, which is great at first, but soon becomes repetitive.
6.5/10

Fat City- Better than most other boxing movies. A really underrated film that deserved a lot more Oscar noms, but it has its weaknesses. B+.
The Big Chill- Funny, charming, a feel-good movie. B+.

The Departed -- my third personal favorite of 2006. I gave it like an A or something and it still stands.

The Departed - My favorite movie of the year (along with Children of Men). Here's hoping Scorsese finally wins the Oscar. A+

Half Nelson (2006)
Ryan Gosling gives a subtly brilliant performance in a subtly brilliant movie. A fine naturalistic drama, one of the year's best. A+

Over the Hedge - mediocre animated feature. 4/10
Dark Water (Japanese version) - BOOOORING. The story was horrible and the pacing so painful. I was really sick though so I was too weak to turn it off. 1/10
Feast - Project Greenlights horror film. Has good moments but overall I can see why it is not good enough to make the big $$. 5/10
I really have to catch The Departed this week on DVD. I'm sick of seeing all these crappy movies.

Breach - So far, the best movie 2007 has seen. I mean, it's not necessarily gonna be on any top movies list at the end of the year, but it was an interesting thriller with a top notch performance by Chris Cooper. Actually, Ryan Phillippe did a fine job as well. B+

SHAMPOO (1975)
Warren Beatty is perfect as a hairdressing womanizer in this comedy-drama that takes place in 1968 during the elections. Quite a bit deeper than that description would lead you to believe. You actually end up feeling for his character who at first just seems like a shallow jerk, but who grows quite a bit as a person by the end of the film. I enjoyed it mostly for Beatty and the always excellent Jack Warden as the husband of one of Beatty's conquests. Hadn't seen this one since probably the early 80's and I think that first time it may have been on regular broadcast tv so I think this was my first time seeing it uncut, though it's pretty tame by today's standards. 6/10

Flags of our Fathers- Nowhere near the war masterpiece Clint Eastwood was trying to make. The battle scenes are very well done, but the movie confusingly jumps all over the place, from narrarator to narrarator. The acting isn't great either. Most of the movie is the soldiers on bond tour in the US and it's pretty boring save a scene or two. At least Letters looks to be a WHOLE lot better. C+.
Infamous- This other Capote biopic takes a different approach to his life. Where Capote was a dark and pretty serious movie, Infamous is glitzy and glamorous and humorous. That's not what I wanted. The acting is alright, Toby Jones is good but nowhere near the greatness that Phillip Seymour Hoffman had. And ironically, this flick has the bigger cast and isn't as good. C+.

Coal Miner's Daughter- This flick just proves you don't need a tragic star story to make a great biopic. A-.
