Cinema Paradiso- A funny, heartwarming look at the magic and nostalgia of movies. B+.
The Last Detail- Not Ashby's best, but a good film that gets better as it goes along and is quite funny at parts. Nicholson deserved his nomination for this flick though. B+.

ONCE WERE WARRIORS (1994) Powerful drama from New Zealand about a Maori family led by a strong-willed and optimistic woman (Rena Owen) and her charming but violent husband (Temuera Morrison). Brings new meaning to the phrase, Dysfunctional Family. Really good, but really sad though it is ultimately uplifting.
8/10
(Star Wars Trivia: The lead actors were reunited for Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Morrison played bounty hunter Jango Fett and his clones, and Rena Owen performed the voice of Taun We, the tall, spindly limbed, long-necked alien that introduced Jango and young Boba Fett to Obi-Wan on Kamino, the cloning planet.)

The Battle of Algiers- The best war film I have ever seen. It almost reminded me of Munich in a way, but this was more tense and fast-paced. A+.

Starship Troopers- I don't care what anyone says about the improbable situations, the bad military strategies, or the wooden acting/dialogue. This is a big-budget B-movie, a fun one at that, which sucessfully combines political satire with great sci-fi action and to top it all off awesome special effects. It might even be one of the most entertaining, "original" movies of the 90s, and it's definately a classic sci-fi film. A+.

I Accuse My Parents - in glorious MST3K-vision.
God, what a terrible movie. But also, one of MST3K's finest episodes.

Casanova (2005) (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - Reference HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10 HD Audio LPCM - 9/10
Rocky (1976) (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 7/10 HD Audio dts - 8/10
The BD is an improvement over the standard-def version but age has unfortunately caught up to Rocky. The good news is most of the film is crisp & clear & has that 3D pop to it. Overall color & detail & sharpness shine on this transfer with minimal artifacting. It is clear that the worst looking scenes are from the source which I guess could be called a good thing however I somewhat had "restoration" expectations from this classic that were no where to be found. There are some scenes that look horrible with lots of grain & noise, colors washed away, but thankfully they do not take up much of the film's runtime. The dts audio at first sounded like a massive improvement but as the film progressed I noticed a few audible flaws. Again, I think this directly from the source as well. Surrounds are used mainly during Rocky's training & main event fight while the rest of the audio is front heavy. I did pick up on the center channel sounding like mono at one point. I didn't listen to the mono track which is included for die-hard fans. All in all, I think this is the best we will see & hear Rocky on the BD format until MGM goes back & spends more mula for a better restoration.. in the meantime, I do recommend this disc for fans only.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn -- now, I'm not a "Star Trek" fan at all. I find it dull and boring and just overall bleh. But this one's actually pretty entertaining, at least in the second half when the technical jargon that I've seen comes standard with "Star Trek." Plus, Kahn's a pretty cool bad guy, but how could he not be being played by Richard Montalban? (Though it is weird to see him walking.) Neat ship-chase at the end, but still...almost every bit of dialogue is technical. Oh, and it leaves you hanging becuase you know, I mean I know and I don't even watch the show, that they're not going to leave a certain character dead. B.

Enter the Dragon
The late Bruce Lee kicks ass in this classic martial arts picture. The sound mixing is really off, but I think that only adds to the movie's charm. If you disagree, all I have to say is "bullshit, Mr. Han man!" A

RASHOMON (1950)
A crime in ancient Japan is described from four different points of view. Interesting cinematic experiment, each tale is told directly into the camera, as the audience is in essence, the jury. Akira Kurosawa was ahead of his time, but I found the film pretty dry overall, making this my least favorite of his films so far.
6/10
Pulp, if you enjoyed STAR TREK II, you should give parts, 3, 4 and 6 a look. You can skip 5, it sucks. 3 brings closure to 2, and 4 and 6 are just really good adventures that you don't have to be a Trekker to enjoy. Part 4: THE VOYAGE HOME, actually even has some good comedic moments.
