CARS (2006)
Like I said when I first saw this, even "only" above average Pixar, is still better than most studios best efforts. Lots of little jokes I missed the first time around too.
7/10
THE STATION AGENT (2003)
Peter Dinklage (NIP/TUCK) is brilliant as a dwarf who inherits an abandoned train depot and though he tries to keep to himself, he becomes involved in the lives of some of the locals. Really funny at times and very heartwarming at others. Good stuff.
8//10

The Marine (2006)
I saw this on the recommendation of my friends... the same ones who told me Van Wilder was funny, but I digress. The movie itself is watchable, in much the same way Commando with Arnold Schwarzenegger is watchable. It's ridiculous, it's illogical, it's a terrible movie, but it's fun to watch. John Cena is pretty tolerable, and as bad as the movie was, Robert Patrick was a kick-ass bad guy. The henchmen were horrible though. This belongs on MST3K. D
EDIT: I've come to learn that my friends thought it would be funny to recommend this movie to me, because they thought it was so terrible when they saw it. Ha, ha, ha.

Your friends suck! ;D I learned a long time ago not to watch movies on the recommendations of most of my friends.

Snakes on a Plane-Finally, a full-on campy creature that doesn't need the Sci-Fi Channel to be able to enjoy it. imdb.com/title/tt0417148/usercomments-934Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla-Highly underrated effort in the series, as it does what the fans want to perfection with a couple of weak story problems. imdb.com/title/tt0109916/usercomments-26Plus, When a Stranger Calls remake, which will get it's own thread in the Review Hell section.

Enemy of the State - A little over-directed, but it does its job. B
Sneakers - I thought it was excellent. Great ensemble cast, a clever heist movie, and a fine comedy all rolled into one. What's not to love? A

Hannibal Rising
The biggest problem with this movie is that it offers a backstory nobody asked for. No one wants to know why Hannibal is the way he is - the mystery is what makes Hannibal so damn intriguing. The fact that we think he's just pure evil is why Hannibal managed to be such a memorable character. So attempting to justify the man he becomes is obviously a mistake. But in objective terms, the film works. Gaspard Ulliel does a really good job in the title role. I mean, he's no Anthony Hopkins or anything, but he's good in his own right. He creeped me out. In terms of facial expressions and reactions, Gong Li is spot on. It's when she opens her mouth that her lines come out all funny. It's not that she's a bad actress, I just think her talents don't translate as well as one might hope. There's lots of sweet-ass kills in the movie, and it has you rooting for Hannibal while at the same time cringing at that fucked up smirk he has on his face... so that's something new. But I think the film would have worked a whole lot better (and would have been received better) if it had not been about Hannibal. On to the final verdict: If you wish to preserve your interpretation on what kind of person Hannibal is, proceed with caution. If you're curious about Hannibal's past, feel a movie won't disrupt your interpretation, or just plain don't give a shit, by all means go see it. But keep in mind, it's a far cry from Silence of the Lambs, in terms of both story and film. B-

I am Trying to Break Your Heart -- good documentary, but really, for Wilco fans. I don't think people who don't really like the band or never even heard of them will like it at all, but for those of us who do, it's amazing. But that tends to be how documentaries on bands are, right? Like, I really was bored senseless with that "Some Kind of Monster" one. A-.
