Clerks II - By far, Kevin Smith's strongest work since Dogma. Kevin Smith goes back to his old ways in what is definitely the funniest movie of the year, the best movie of the summer (sorry Pirates). When it's funny, it's FUNNY. When it's not funny, it's actually quite dramatic. There's a pretty cool scene where Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran are finally able to act, and I must say it's a very strong scene.
Definitely this year's Wedding Crashers... or the 40 Year Old Virgin. Take your pick.

Mysterious Skin--a weird, disturbing film with excellent performances. The ending worked here visually better than it did in print; that being said, the film really didn't delve into the characters as much as it could have or as much as the novel did. But it's still so good. B+.

Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III-Already reviewed, but just needed to know the kill sequences in it. Still a highly underrated entry in the TCM series. Just hurt by all the TCM missteps-no body counts. Five deaths isn't that impressive.
Pterodactyl-Same reasoning for watching as above, (needed to know the kill scenes) and probably my favorite of the Sci-Fi Channel Creature Features.

THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN (2005)
Finally saw this and thought it was excellent! I always knew Steve Carell was a funny guy based on The Daily Show, the few episodes of The Office that I've seen, and his small supporting roles in movies like BRUCE ALMIGHTY and ANCHORMAN, but VIRGIN really showcased his comedic and dramatic talents. Not to mention he's a talented writer as well. Laugh out loud funny moments combined with some nice dramatic touches. The Age of Aquarius ending killed me!
9/10
CLERKS II (2006)
Kevin Smith's sequel to his cult classic CLERKS didn't disappoint. In fact it was pretty damn funny! This flick has it all. Some great "fanboy" moments, ie: STAR WARS vs. the RINGS trilogy, the upcoming TRANSFORMERS movie, Jay's homage to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, etc., gross-out humor and even some genuinely touching moments. Film critic Joel Siegel, who loudly walked out on the film, really needs to lighten up and not be such a tool. A really good sequel. I'm gonna miss these characters. Bring on the animated CLERKS movie! And if you're a Kevin Smith or CLERKS fan, and you've never watched the CLERKS animated series, get thee to a video store!
8.5/10
FLIGHTPLAN (2005)
Another good performance by Jodie Foster in a pretty suspenseful film. Unfortunately, Peter Sarsgaard's character always looked like he was "up to something", so I was already doubting him. A seemingly big plothole in the story keeps this one from being great though.
7/10

Lady in the Water- A great fairy-tale turn for Shymalan.

Lady in the Water--it had some good moments, some really horrible ones, and many that made me want to punch that arrogant bastard in the face ("You're not that good, fool!"). The script could have (and should have) undergone at least three or four more drafts and I can understand Disney not orgasming over it. C.
Clerks II--let's face the fact, Kevin Smith isn't a good filmmaker. He even admits it himself. But he can write some funny, essentially, 'dick and fart jokes'. Above all you can tell he has loads of love for these characters. It shows and we feel for them too. Plus, I liked Elias. B-.

Lady in the Water - It's ironic, really. Shyamalan takes a shot at the film critics, and film critics proceed to proving him right. Sorry, Pulp, I gotta disagree with you here. This was one of the most imaginative movies I've seen in a long time. Giamatti and Howard are excellent, and Shyamalan himself ain't that bad of an actor. The asian characters were annoying as fuck, though. Yeesh. Tone down the stereotypes next time.
I gotta say Shyamalan is a really ballsy guy for throwing in an unlikeable arrogant film critic. That alone cost him a decent score on Rottentomatoes. Those critics are vindictive bastards, aren't they?

SPOILER IN THIS ARGUMENTS
Disagree if you will, but Shyamalan is one pretenetious arrogant jerkoff. I mean, casting HIMSELF as the character with CONNECTIONS to everything who will CHANGE THE WORLD. Jesus Christ come on.
And from what I understand and have read, Shyamalan's assistant took the script from Philly to LA to deliver it to a Disney exectutive, but she was out...dropping off her KID at a birthday party. He took offense to that and left for Warner Bros. Yes, it's a personal attack on Shyamalan but it stills demonstrates how important he thinks he is.
The film critic even furthered his 'holier-than-thou' attitude. The whole prick aspect of the character and his death scene were...crap. They could have done better. The character might have been better (I'm not saying lose his unlikelihood, but just...round him out). Then that stupid stupid death scene.
I hated that cop guy's acting too. He was horrible.
The film was all right but it could have been loads better. And at least it was a step up from that horrid mess that was 'The Village'.
I never said the premise was rotten, it could have been good but Shyamalan needs to realize that he's not some god among writers who can push out brilliance right away. The script needed a couple more drafts before it was ready to be filmed. A lot of things could be fixed if Shyamalan could swallow his pride enough to hire an editor.

Agree to disagree, I guess. The movie wasn't perfect, but it was still one of his better achievements.

Monster House--like frakenjohn said, loads of fun. Great excitement and just all around neat. The best animated film since...oh let's say 'Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit'. Great parody of the 'Forrest Gump' feather in the beginning with a leaf (ironic since Zemeckis brought Kenan out?). Probably the best of the films opened this weekend. B+.
