BATTLE ROYALE (2000)
Cult favorite about a group of Japanese kids who are abducted and forced to compete in a fight to the death on a deserted island. Each kid is given food, water, a map, a random weapon and 3 days to kill each other off, with only one survivor left standing, or else everybody dies. Each kid is also wearing a high-tech collar so they can be tracked, and if they attempt to remove the collar, not compete, escape, or just generally cause trouble, the collar is detonated. The kids trapped on an island and turning on each other device reminded me a little bit of LORD OF THE FLIES, and the "death-match as competition" aspect reminded me of THE RUNNING MAN or DEATH RACE 2000. Violent and bloody, and a touch of dark humor.
7/10

Fool's Gold 5/10- Cute romantic comedy starring Matthew McConnaughy and Kate Hudson. Typical, but entertaining. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back- still hilarious no matter how many times I've watched it. Thpe Devil's Rejects & Halloween- I was on a Rob Zombie kick last weekend. : American Splendor-comments in MGOTM

WALL-E (2008, Andrew Stanton)
Still waiting for the dust to settle, but this may be my favorite Pixar movie yet. Score to be disclosed when I make my decision.

The Strangers- It has all the ingreidients to be great, but it falls a tad short. It is a bit slow at times and the whole "based on a true story" wraparound took something off the movie. However, first-time director Bryan Bertino sets up a great horror atmosphere and lets the film ride from there. However, it is no must-see. B-.
Into the Wild- Now here's a fantastic movie. Sean Penn really knew what he wanted out of this movie, and it shows. The cinematography and editing really glorify the wilderness here and make it beautiful. The acting is what really shines though, especially Emile Hirsch and Hal Holbrook (Catherine Keener also has a pretty good role), but you feel for every character and that's where this film greatly suceeds. A-.

The Orphanage (J. A. Bayona) -- creepy, intense, and very well-executed (the script itself is very strong in that everything happens for a reason). The ending reminded me of A.I. in that it's presented as a happy one, beautiful and moving, but really, it's dark, depressing, devestating, cruel, and brutal. A-.

PERSEPOLIS (2007)
My thoughts in the Movie Genre of the Month thread.
WALL-E (2008)
Pixar does it again. Is it the second coming of animation, as some critics have been touting? I don't think so, but it does feature a heartwarming lead character that's a combination of E.T. and R2-D2, a romance that rings truer than in most live-action romantic comedies, a message about consumerism and the environment, and gorgeous state-of-the-art animation. Nice tips of that and homages to previous sci-fi classics. For instance, Sigourney Weaver voices the ship's computer. If you recall, Weaver had her own problems with the ship's computer, Mother, in ALIEN.

Men in Black (Barry Sonnenfeld) -- Sonnenfeld's third best piece of direction (after the first two episodes of "Pushing Daisies"); it's fun but fluffy, the only developed character is Tommy Lee Jones but even he's not that deep, but what action and laughs and performances and chemistry! B+.

Ordinary People (1980, Robert Redford)
I think I am in agreement with everybody who says Raging Bull was the better movie in 1980, but Ordinary People was a very emotional film for me. Its pacing gets a little sluggish at times, but the climactic scene towards the end brought tears to my eyes. And how does the Academy figure that Timothy Hutton was a SUPPORTING character? I mean, the movie was ABOUT him. He had the character arc. He was in the movie longest. Not to mention he gave a performance that upstaged Donald Sutherland. Judd Hirsch was great, too. 9/10
