Happy New Year everybody and welcome to the 2008 edition of the thread where members of "The Board" can post what movies they've seen lately.
Whether you saw it in a movie theater or in your home theater we wanna hear about it. Whether it was on HD-DVD in widescreen and with 6.1 sound, or it aired on the USA Network where it was edited for content and loaded with commercials, we want to know.
And don't just give us a list of movies, please. Tell us a little about it. Did you love it or hate it? Is it a "must see" or a "must avoid"? Sometimes I'm too lazy to go look up a title on imdb.com so a little info from you guys is nice.
And if you want to really go all out with a full blown review of any title you see, new or old, feel free to write a review for the "Review Hell" section. But please check first to make sure one hasn't been written already and just add your comments to that one.
Also, if it was a made-for-tv movie or miniseries, and not a theatrical release, please go to the "Where's the Remote" section and tell us about it in the similar thread over there, "Just watched on tv".
Cheers!

Started my year with the best movie ever made....
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg) -- Practically perfect in every single way. If I could give it A triple plus times infinity I would. A+.

Die Hard (1988) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 8/10 HD Audio dts - 8/10 Still my fav out of the now 4 films. Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 7/10 HD Audio dts - 8/10 Don't understand why this one is much liked over the others. Imo, it is the weakest of the 4 Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio dts - 9/10 I liked this one 3rd best. Sam Jackson is great & sometimes steals Bruce's spotlight. Live Free or Die Hard (2007) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 10/10 HD Audio dts - Reference My second fav. I honestly thought this was gonna be a low budget mess. Very welcome surprise to the franchise. Tech thoughts on how all look & sound; This collection set was a mixed bag in both video & audio quality. What I was expecting to see was a bit of improvement over the years of these films. Not gonna go into lengthy detail. The first film has decent video. Color saturation is improved with minimal artifacting. The source could have been cleaned up. Audio wasn't as well balanced as I would have liked it to be. Same goes for the second film. Now the second film is a minor step up from the SE DVD. The film is dark with grain, minor print damage & bleeding colors + frequent "soft" looking scenes. The 3rd film is a nice improvement over the DVD but again specs of dirt, minor noise keep this from being perfect. The opening audio sound mix had me thinking oh yeah! Reference material. Guess not. Center channel IE dialog was frequently distorted throughout while the mains & surrounds were crystal clear. My other gripe is a minor mixing issue. The 4th is great all around. I watched this one twice on a 1080p flat panel & SXRD RPTV & the presentation is so close to flawless I had to give it a 10. Maybe if I rated with decimals, I'd give it a 9.9 cause there is intentional grain in some low lit scenes. This is the title to throw in to show off your sound system to friends. I'd say this is Transformers nemesis. Anyways, overall the set is worth picking up for fans of the older films as each one is an improvement over the recent DVD SE's, just don't expect eye poppin 3D HD. If thats all your after, just go for the 4th film.

TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY (2006)
It's no THIS IS SPINAL TAP, but it's still pretty funny. The plot is an Indiana Jones type of quest for a mythical object, the titular Pick of Destiny, mixed with the D's hilarious brand of "heavy metal mixed with folk rock" music. Some funny cameos by Ben Stiller, Ronnie James Dio, Tim Robbins and Dave Grohl.
7.5/10
THE ILLUSIONIST (2006)
Some nice performances by Ed Norton and Paul Giamatti, but the overall movie was only above average, not great. The ending is supposed to be a major twist, but the whole thing is pretty obvious if you're paying attention. Norton's character may be a master magician, but he's no Keyser Soze.
6.5/10

Dreamgirls (Bill Condon) -- spectacular musical here, and it's all about Jennifer Hudson. Sure, there's an overkill of showstoppers and the end credits are like naming Oscar nominations, but I enjoyed it, and that centerpiece musical number is outstanding. B+.

Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty) -- intentionally cheesy with several dozen over the top performances (I'm lookin' at you, Al) and great production design, it's like anti-noir, or the most cartoonish film noir outside of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". So what if Beatty keeps one face throughout the entire picture, it's still just an all around entertaining movie to watch. B.

Re: Dick Tracy, I always thought Dustin Hoffman was pretty funny as Mumbles.
THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (1963)
Jerry Lewis plays a shy, nebbish professor who creates a serum that releases his suave alter-ego, Buddy Love. Hadn't seen this one since I was a kid and while the first appearance of Love is pretty funny and Lewis does a great job of playing two completely different characters, both personas started to get on my nerves pretty quickly. This might be sacrilege, but I think the Eddie Murphy remake is a better movie in every respect.
5/10

There Will Be Blood (2007, Paul Thomas Anderson)
Excellent all around. Looks like Daniel Day-Lewis etched his name on that Best Actor statuette, and passed the chisel over to Paul Dano so he can put his name on the Supporting Actor statuette. Also, fantastic cinematography - in a way, it felt almost like a Kubrick movie. The simplicity of the score was brilliant as well. It drags a bit towards the end, but ultimately it's a satisfying picture, and I will not be surprised if this takes the Oscar for Best Picture... I'll take it over the other two frontrunners - Atonement and No Country for Old Men. 9/10
