SERENITY (2005)
SEX AND THE CITY (2008)
My thoughts in the Movie Genre of the Month thread.
KUNG FU HUSTLE (2004)
A wannabe gangster who aspires to join the Axe Gang, the most notorious gang in 1940's Canton, China, inadvertenly sets the wheels in motion for a huge kung fu battle between the Axe Gang and people living in the slum. Some of these people turn out to have amazing powers and are some of the greatest martial artists of all time. Sounds like typical chop-socky, but some very funny and highly entertaining visuals set this one apart.

BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (1993)
My thoughts in the Movie Genre of the Month thread.
THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL (1978)
What if infamous WWII Nazi "scientist" Dr. Josef Mengele figured out a way to clone Adolf Hitler so they could start a Fourth Reich? What if there were 95 identical young boys, all Hitler clones, and all being raised by unknowing adoptive parents, all across the world? And what if their adoptive fathers were all being targeted for assassination by Mengele and his followers? That's the premise of this mystery/suspense film. Gregory peck plays Mengele and Laurence Olivier plays Ezra Lieberman, a famed Nazi hunter trying to uncover the plot. Lieberman is based on real-life Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. Crazy premise, but the cast treats it pretty realistically for the most part. Suspenseful, if at times a bit on the campy side. Interesting to see Peck play such an evil character.

A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG (2004)
A young girl (Scarlett Johansson) returns to New Orleans after the death of her mother to live in her mom's house. When she arrives she finds that it's being lived in by two of her mom's friends, an alcoholic literature professor (John Travolta) and his equally alcoholic protege (Gabriel Macht). So-so movie and the "big surprise" isn't really, but Travolta gives probably one of his best ever performances.
5.5/10
THE KING OF KONG (2007)
Entertaining documentary about two men competing for the world record high score on the classic arcade game, Donkey Kong. The record holder is a hot sauce mogul who first set the record back in 1982, the challenger is a science teacher who started playing the game while unemployed.

Wall-E (Andrew Stanton) -- cute and captivating, even if it didn't feel to me as fulfilling as Ratatouille. B+.

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY (2008) Enjoyed it about as much as the original. Visually stunning, but the story seemed to be kind of all over the place. The first visit inside the Paranormal Institute was right out of MEN IN BLACK with all kinds of crazy shit going on in the background while characters just go about their daily routine, "Oh, it's Friday.". The rest seemed like part LORD OF THE RINGS, part PAN'S LABYRINTH and part Kung Fu/Wire Fu spectacle. All of this, guest-starring Hellboy and his teammates. I did really like the Elf Prince and Princess. They were really interesting, well-acted characters and I almost wish there was a movie that was just about them and their world. Would've made a heck of a straight-up fantasy film. But I guess we'll get that when del Toro takes on THE HOBBIT. 7/10 (10/10 for the makeup and visual effects)

THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION (1984)
Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller), a brain surgeon/rock star/test pilot, samurai, etc., and his band, The Hong Kong Cavaliers, must fight creatures from the 8th dimension. John Lithgow pretty much steals the show in a scenery chewing performance as the evil Dr. Lizardo. Damn, thats sounds entertaining! I can see why this is considered a cult favorite among fans, but I pretty much hated it. Almost to the point of anger. The zanier and wackier the movie tried to be, the more I hated it. For me personally, "highy original" did not translate into "highly entertaining". In fact, I dozed off a couple of times. I had never seen it before and now I'll never have to see it again.
