Between Sunday and Monday:
THREE KINGS (1999)
At the end of the Gulf War, a group of American soldiers find a map and go looking for Kuwaiti gold that is rumoured to be hidden near their desert base. George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze play the soldiers. Some decent action and funny dark comedy moments. Hadn't seen this one since it was in theaters. Worth a second viewing.
7.5/10
My comments in the "Movie Genre of the Month" thread for the following three:

The Bourne Ultimatium (Paul Greengrass) -- more overdone handheld camera, but better action, questions, and conclusions that the last in the series. Dunno if I like this or the first one better. A-.

SOPHIE'S CHOICE (1982)
Good film, a little long, but I think the second half is more interesting as the stuff shown in flashbacks regarding Meryl Streep's character in Nazi concentration camps is really powerful. Streep not only learned a Polish accent but also learned how to speak German for this film. That's dedication, and it shows, as she gives one of the all-time greatest performances by a man or woman.
7.5/10

Salo, Or 120 Days of Sodom-1976 Italian beauracracy kidnaps 9 boys and 9 girls from a small village and takes them to a secret compound for 120 days of mental, physical and spiritual torture. This comes so close to being able to have a review on it, but the fact is that it's not a true exploitation film. It's execution and plot dictate so, but the fact that it's an arthouse film with an exploitative message say otherwise. Eitherway, this is incredibly hard to sit through at first, merely for the subject matter and frank nudity. Once the tortures set in, which in sodomy, devourment of excrement and forced pleasuring of the same sex, it gets even worse, though this still suffers from the same problems most exploitation films 2 hours long suffer from: eventually it gets boring when it's just the same things over and over again. After seeing the first time a nude boy is whipped, seeing it happen ten more times just makes it loose it's power. Plus, the fact that you see everyone in the cast naked at one point looses it's shock value when it keeps happening. Only for the most adventurous and open-minded. 7/10

You have to be able to appreciate films like that to be able to have any fun with it. Plus, you have to be able to get over the subject matter at hand, which isn't all that easy to do.

SAMURAI III: DUEL ON GANRYU ISLAND (1956)
Conclusion to the trilogy starring Toshiro Mifune as the title character. Very good, but the buildup to the fight leads you to believe it'll be something of epic proportions and the reality was a bit underwhelming.
