August Rush (2007, Kirsten Sheridan)
Picture Oliver Twist if it were done today with the endearing charm of Forrest Gump. It's sappy, yes, but it certainly tugs at the heartstrings. As many fantasy films do, August Rush DOES require a major suspension of disbelief. But with Freddie Highmore's incredible performance (at his young age, he's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors) and the incredible film scoring, August Rush is something you should definitely check out. 8/10

Surf's Up (I forget) -- Predictable but cute and entertaining. Does that compensate for anything? B.
The Big Lebowski (the Coens) -- hilarious, bizarre, and pretty much everything that you'd expect from those Coens. Don't think it's as perfect as "Fargo" but very good nonetheless. A.

UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION (2006)
The first one was better than average, but still no classic. This one? Not quite. The main vampire villain, demon-looking bat-winged Marcus, however was pretty cool.
Another sequel is in the works, but this franchise is already getting a bit long in the tooth. Pun intended.
5/10

The Mist (2007, Frank Darabont)
POSSIBLE SPOILERS WITHIN THIS REVIEW - I don't say anything that happens, but there is kind of a hint. Nonspoiler version of the complaint: I wasn't happy with the ending.
I expected much less, because the preview had this looking simply like a horror film with crappy special effects. Even Frank Darabont didn't have me jumping for joy on this one. However, there is a lot he did right with this film. A better special effects team might have been cool, but the psychological aspect of the film was very intriguing. Many of the characters were three-dimensional, which is almost unheard of in the genre. The special effects thing wasn't even that big a deal anymore. Then came the ending. Can't really say too much without giving it away, but this ending was written by a sadistic individual who wants terrible things to happen to people. I can handle an unhappy ending, but this one flat out pissed me off! It's not a bad ending at all, but it is quite infuriating. 7/10
Easy Rider (1969, Dennis Hopper)
Ahem... Get your motor runnin'... head out on the highway... 9/10

INVINCIBLE (2006) A down and out athlete living in Philadelphia in the mid-seventies gets an unexpected shot at the "Big Time" and overcomes the odds to be a an underdog hero. Sounds a lot like a character played by Sylvester Stallone. No, not Rambo, the other one. This is the true story of 30-year-old bartender Vince Papale, who attended open tryouts and unnexpectedly made the cut to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. Donnie Walhberg plays Papale with earnestness and definitely has the athleticism to convince us that he's the real deal. Besides the obvious ROCKY similarities, it also reminded me of another movie I watched recently, the Will Smith flick, PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS. Not a classic, but it's pretty good. 6.5/10 BANDIDAS (2006) Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz team up as a pair of Mexican women in 1848 who seek revenge on the gang who killed both of their fathers. Long story short, both dads were in the way of construction of a new railroad. The girls strap on guns and become kind of a couple of female Robin Hoods. Silly and not very good, but they had me at "Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz team up"... in chaps and cowboy hats, no less. ;D Much to my chagrin, the only nudity in the flick is provided by Steve Zahn's bare ass. Oh, the humanity! 4/10

Santa Sangre-Read my thoughts in the Mexican Horror thread.
Demons 2-Rather interesting, still after having been a while. 80s cheese is still on display, the gore is still there, the demon emerging from the TV is still impressive and the action is still incredible. Just something about it that really makes it seem like a lot of fun. Just skip the commentary on it, nothing of importance and way too many dead spots. 8.5/10

The Mist (Frank Darabont) -- for about an hour-and-fifty-five minutes, this was one of the best horror movies I've seen. Incredibly intense, wonderfully character driven, and downright moody; it's very well-crafted. Then the last ten minutes hit and God, what a terrible ending, almost a "Fuck you" to the audience. If and when you see it, my advice would be when some of the characters get into the car (is that that big of a spoiler?), leave. Let it hang ambiguously over you. Because otherwise...I dunno. A-.
I'm lying, of course, about skipping out on the ending. I'd suggest you watch it because interpretations and the things people see and want in anything differ, so you may find something about it.
