PsychoMy third favorite movie of all time. Of course, I speak of the original 1960 Hitchcock film, as there WAS no remake. A+ If there WAS no remake, then you shouldn't have to tell us that it was Hitchcock's, as we would've known. ;D See, every time I mention Psycho as one of my favorites, some wise guy has to go and mention some remake that was never made. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: There IS no Vince Vaughn, there is only Anthony Perkins.

There IS no Vince Vaughn, there is only Anthony Perkins. That's right! WEDDING CRASHERS, starring Owen Wilson and Anthony Perkins! DODGEBALL, starring Ben Stiller & Anthony Perkins! And of course, who can forget OLD SCHOOL, starring Will Ferrell and Anthony Perkins! ;D Just watched THE NINTH GATE (1999) Roman Polanski directs Johnny Depp in the story of a book dealer who is hired to authenticate the last three remaining copies of a book supposedly written by Satan himself. Interesting set-up, and the usual good performance by Depp, but ultimately I didn't think it delivered on the chills or thrills. And may I also add that the musical score in some sections was really inappropriate and actually came off as comedic, lessening the mood of what should've been suspenseful scenes. A real missed opportunity. 5/10

And as for Jennifer Aniston... she and Anthony Perkins... you know, Perkinston... it just didn't work out.

Yeesh, just making a joke. I thought we were allowed to do that from time to time. Next time, I'll keep my humourous thoughts about how hypocritical your statement was to myself.

Miss Potter- Cute and feel-good, but it really isn't that awards worthy (which I think it was trying to be). B.

Watched last night:
UNITED 93 (2006)
Stunning. So intense, my heart was up in my throat for most of it. Even knowing how badly it's all going to end, you can't help but cheer for the passengers when they turn the tables on their hijackers. Powerful and it doesn't exploit the event or the victims.
9/10
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006)
Well made and pretty funny at times, but a Best Picture nominee? (UNITED 93, whose director IS nominated, should've been in it's spot.) I enjoyed it, but I think it's just a bit overhyped. When Olive performs in the talent portion of the competition though, it is frickin' hilarious.
8/10
CRY-BABY (1990)
John Waters' spoof of 50's teen musicals with Johnny Depp in an Elvis Presley-like role. Ironically, Depp took the role of a 50's-type teen idol in this off-beat flick in order to avoid being typecast as a teen idol. Apparently it worked. Anyway, it's fun if you don't take it too seriously.
6.5/10

And far too many comedies are ignored. Yeah, I think "United 93" shoulda probably been there, instead of, oh God, probably "The Queen", and the same goes for "Children of Men", but no one understands the Academy, including the Academy.

Yeah, there are at least 25 movies i'd put in there over the Queen (United 93 and Children of Men included). That's this year's Capote (as in, the movie is slow and not crafted nearly as well as its competition, but it did have the strongest lead performance of the year).
I, too, am glad Little Miss Sunshine made it.

I think I'm going to address this in the 2006 Oscar thread elsewhere in "Off the Chest" as I don't want to totally derail this thread. Just watched: PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) My new favorite film of 2006. Stand back, I'm gonna use all the cliches: Visually stunning, great performances, a charming young actress (Ivana Baquero), a villain you love to hate, moments of children's book fantasy countered with acts of realistic & shocking violence. Guillermo del Toro has given us the adult fairy tale that M. Night Shayamalan tried to give us with "Lady in the Water". A dark & twisted Alice in Wonderland coupled with the horrors of war. "The Devil's Backbone" was just the tip of the iceberg to what this director had stewing in his brain. From the director of "Hellboy"?? Huh? What? Mr. Del Toro? Fantastico! Muy bueno! 9.5/10

The Illusionist - IMO, the better of the two magician movies of 2006. Not anything against the Prestige, more of a compliment for this movie. A
Treasure Planet - I can't believe this didn't do well at the box office. I mean, what didn't this have that previous Disney movies did? I thought it was an exciting film with some really nice animation. Very underrated. A-

A whole bunch of great sleaze courtesy of Jess Franco: Vampire Junction-Starts off really entertaining, and is probably as sleazy as a vampire film is about to get, but just gets lost in ineptness. imdb.com/title/tt0274189/usercomments-2Sadomania-Probably could've used a more linear plot-line, but as far as Women-in-Prison movies go, this is about as good as you could want it to be. imdb.com/title/tt0083019/usercomments-13Love Letters of a Portugese Nun-All right, now it's official. After this splattering of disgust and sleaze designed to piss off Catholics, I need a shower. imdb.com/title/tt0076312/usercomments-11Revenge in the House of Usher-Slow, boring, and nowhere near as good as Price's classic Gothic chiller is. imdb.com/title/tt0084592/usercomments-12Time to come back to plain old regular horror: Manticore-Timely Sci-Fi Channel creature feature, the same-old, same-old feel to it. imdb.com/title/tt0417943/usercomments-11Firestarter-Only good for the scenes where a fire is starting, otherwise, it just waits to get back to those scenes. imdb.com/title/tt0087262/usercomments-55Godzilla vs. Mothra-Fun battles, military fights and a cool new creature, but too much time spent with useless subplots. imdb.com/title/tt0104352/usercomments-25Godzilla vs. Destroyah-Ends the Haisei series on one of the strongest notes possible, is only for a few mistakes here and there. imdb.com/title/tt0113187/usercomments-4420 Million Miles to Earth-Harryhausen magic in his prime, all I need to say. imdb.com/title/tt0050084/usercomments-43
