Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007, Shekhar Kapur) Haven't seen the original, although if it's THAT much better than this one, then my hat's off to it. I rather enjoyed this one. Visually, it's the most beautiful movie of the year. The story has its flaws, particularly the two-dimensionality of the antagonist, but overall, it has a lot going for it. Aside from the gorgeous mise-en-scene, there's Cate Blanchett's performance, as well as Clive Owen and Geoffrey Rush supporting her. It may drag just a bit, but there's much to appreciate here. 8/10 You should definitely watch the first, it's awesome.

Transformers (Michael Bay) -- It's shit, but it's fun shit and it's not trying to be anything else. Though, don't you think there coulda been a better ending? BZZZT. Dead. The End. B.

THE HUMAN STAIN (2003)
After quitting his job over a misunderstanding, a college professor (Anthony Hopkins) with a shocking secret, has an affair with a disturbed young woman (Nicole Kidman) battling her own demons, including a violent ex-husband. Both actors give terrific performances in this pretty powerful drama which also features Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Wentworth Miller, who are all equally strong in their roles. Not sure I completely bought Hopkins in the part, not due to his acting, but because of what his secret turns out to be. (Not going to spoil it.) But still thought it was a good movie. A nice surprise.
8/10

Titus (Julie Taymor) -- it's one huge joke and I think that the play is that, too. A parody of tragedies and Taymor directs a visually stunning (and sometimes shocking) adaptation that is hilarious on one level and digustingly awful the next. A little long, though, not that I have anything against length, just some scenes don't warrant their running time. B+.

Haven't been keeping up, so I'm gonna just skim through most of these.
La Dolce Vita (1960, Federico Fellini) - 9/10
House of Games (1985, David Mamet) - 8/10
Planet of the Apes (1968, Franklin J. Schaffner)
Alright, call the movie police. But I finally saw this one. A classic in every respect, with an underlying message that resonates to this very day. 9/10
Gone Baby Gone (2007, Ben Affleck)
Say what you will about Ben Affleck's acting abilities, but the guy sure can direct a damn good movie... it seems he also directed himself out of a career slump that began when he hooked up with Jennifer Lopez. Casey Affleck was fantastic - I mean, really. Where did this guy come from? I've never seen him in a starring role, but he kicked ass! Great supporting cast, too. Amy Ryan was astounding, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman were excellent. Easily one of the strongest movies of the year. 9/10
Miller's Crossing (1990, Joel Coen)
One of the Coen Bros.' best films. The "Danny Boy" sequence remains one of the most memorable scenes I have seen in any film. 10/10
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967, Stanley Kramer)
Not as shocking today as it was back then, but certainly better than the Ashton Kutcher/Bernie Mac remake. Sidney Poitier is a master of his craft. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were wonderful. And despite of its age, the movie managed to make me laugh quite a bit. 8/10

HAPPY FEET (2006)
Cute, but not great. I preferred the live-action version, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS.
6.5/10
