Superbad- Really, I thought it was funny. But I don't know. I mean ever since The 40-Year Old Virgin was released, I can't find one movie coming out from like Judd Apatow and company that is just making me crack up. This film, like Knocked Up, had a couple of belly laughs but altogether just can't pass the bar into the great movie area. They both handle their material maturely but they don't pack the laughs they should. I am dissappointed. I'll give it this: I found it to be better than American Pie. B.

Ocean's Thirteen- I thought this film was so clever and so much fun. I was engaged 100% the whole way through loving every minute of it. The best of the Ocean trilogy. A-.

Sunshine- The film was not what I expected. I expected science fiction, not science. The film is not probable, I'd think. But Danny Boyle tries to make it as real as possible. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but in science FICTION, I think that you should try and stretch the boundaries but coming up with something original. So maybe they ran out of great ideas? I don't know. But I liked it, and I loved the visuals. Although, the editing got on my nerves at times and (like the sun) hurt my eyes. So in conclusion: it's not a sci-fi movie that will break boundaries, but take it for what it is: a well made, visually exciting movie. B+.

I'm taking a class on the Language of Cinema, and have been assigned a bit of a "Joan of Arc marathon" - I'm supposed to compare how each film is shot.
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Carl Theodor Dreyer)
A beautiful film experience. Great cinematography, great (silent) acting... Maria Falconetti's performance, while somewhat victorian (like most silent actors), also seemed very human and heartfelt. Extra kudos for Criterion - the picture quality is almost perfect, which is great considering how this film was almost lost forever. 9/10
The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962, Robert Bresson)
Great cinematography, but the movie was very monotone. I don't speak French, but I know there are times where it looks like there should have been a shift in the tone of someone's voice, and there was none. With the exception of Florence Delay, who I could see why she would act that way, the other performances were sub-par. I appreciate how close it was to the minutes of the actual trial, but it could be done better. 7/10
Joan the Maid 1.: The Battles (1994, Jacques Rivette)
I don't know if this was released concurrently with part 2 or not... The cinematography was brilliant. I love how they kept with the "rule of threes" and how the picture always seemed balanced (and the camera would constantly move to keep it so). And the picture quality is excellent. Much better acting than the Trial. Only problem is it's really long. Part 1 is 2 hours long, and part 2 (which I will be watching Saturday) is another 2. 8/10

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (2007)
Really good action flick and an improvement over BOURNE SUPREMACY. Even though director Paul Greengrass' trademark "shakey cam" makes a return from the last movie, it didn't bother me as much this time.
7.5/10

The Lives of Others- If you saw Pan's Labyrinth and let out a long gasp when it lost to this film at the Oscars, you shouldn't have been surprised. I thought this film more than justified it's award. At first I was afraid I wouldn't understand it. But as I soon learned, the film is very easy to understand, yet still be profound. It covers some very deep and existential topics in wonderful ways. Also, my favorite thing about the film, is that the characters are wonderful and I found strong bonds to them. Great cinematography too. I look forward to seeing more from Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. A+.

Black Dog-One of my all-time favorite action films, just non-stop fun and excitement from start to finish. Top-notch chases, no dull spots and a fun time all-around.

Inferno- While it's necessary entry in the soon to be completed trilogy, it's weak as a sequel to Suspiria. The score by Keith Emerson can't compare to Claudio Simonetti and Goblin's wonderful, spooky music. It kind of spells everything out for you instead of letting you think like Suspiria did. Cinematography is still great. In short, it's nowhere near as good as Suspiria, but if you really want to uderstand what happens in the first and third films, you need to watch it. B.
