I don't understand why anyone would go see "Rush Hour 3" when you know Ratner's reputation and that the other films weren't even that great to begin with, when you could see instead...:
Stardust (Matthew Vaughn) -- probably the best fantastical film since "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (okay, maybe "Pan's Labyrinth" but that's really a different level of fairy tale), the action is great, fun, and the characters are the same. Some say that this is the new "Princess Bride"; personally, I think it's better. A-.

I WANTED to see that. Unfortunately, my buddy couldn't get out of work in time to see it, so we had to settle for the obviously lesser Rush Hour 3. But rest assured, I will be catching Stardust tomorrow. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006, Tom Tykwer) A fine period piece with a great cast and excellent (if a little long and drawn out) story. Still, a satisfying piece of cinema that really didn't get much publicity. If you have about 2 1/2 hours to spare, you should definitely check it out. 8/10

I'm not bothering with RUSH HOUR 3 either, but not because of Ratner. I liked X3 and RED DRAGON. But Chris Tucker on the other hand, gets on my last fucking nerve. He was funny in the original FRIDAY, but just got more and more grating with each film. He almost single-handedly ruined THE FIFTH ELEMENT far more than anything Ratner may have done to X3. "DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH???" Yeah, Chris. Now shut the fuck up, go spend your huge Rush Hour 3 paycheck and disappear for another five years.
Instead I rewatched:
APOCALYPTO (2006)
Beautiful cinematography, great acting by a cast of unknowns, amazing costumes and makeup, epic and intense action story inhabited by archetypical characters. This one didn't disappoint at all on a second viewing. So underrated.
9/10

Stardust (2007, Matthew Vaughn)
One of the better films of the summer... better than most of these threequels and sequels anyway. Finally, someone does something different. And unfortunately, everyone's watching Rush Hour 3 instead. They have no idea the quality they are missing. Robert De Niro was especially awesome in this. Glad to see him make a comeback. It was very reminiscent of all the 80's fantasy flicks I grew up with (Willow, the Princess Bride, etc.), and I really appreciated that. 9/10

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001, Peter Jackson -- with Rifftrax)
Today, I discovered the reason they don't make 3-hour comedies: because laughing can be exhausting. I had to watch this in two separate sittings because halfway through, my cheeks could hardly take it anymore. It's a great riff though, and my hats off to Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy for their ability to come up with material for a movie that long. Here's hoping they do Titanic someday (they did a couple scenes from it back when MST3K was still on the air).
With or without Rifftrax: 10/10

The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson) -- one of my favorite movies. Who knew that depression could be so fun? A+.

CITY OF GOD (2002)
Based on fact tale about a ghetto in Rio de Janeiro during the 60's-80's, the gangs that came to power in this violent environment, and one young man's determination to avoid the gang life and fulfill his dream of becoming a photographer. Powerful stuff.
8.5/10

MAN OF THE YEAR (2006)
Robin Williams plays a comedian/talk show host, who on a whim decides to run for President and then much to everyone's surprise, including his own, actually wins. Not the hilarious political comedy I was expecting. Williams gets huge laughs in the movie from old jokes or jokes that are only sporadically funny. And a subplot with Laura Linney is really dark and more of a political thriller. It felt like I was watching two different movies at the same time and that Linney was starring in the more interesting of the two. Not horrible, just kind of there.

El Cantante (2006, Leon Ichaso)
Another biopic about a singer that did drugs. The one thing saving the film from mediocrity is the acting. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were fantastic. The movie itself... meh. 7/10 - had the performances been weaker, it would have been 6/10.
Becoming Jane (2007, Julian Jarrold)
It's good, if only a little slow and lengthy. Great acting by Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy, mixed in with great cinematography and sets. For those of you who enjoyed Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility, the film falls within the same style (not surprising, considering who the movie is about). 8/10
Being John Malkovich (1999, Spike Jonze)
My favorite of the Kaufman films. It's just so original, imaginative and funny. I don't know what Kaufman's on, but I seriously want some. 10/10
