NATIONAL TREASURE (2004)
It's a movie. With some actors. Kind of a "lite" version of INDIANA JONES & LARA CROFT mixed with THE DA VINCI CODE. I guess if those other movies are too intense for you, this might be up your alley. Is a sequel really necessary???

Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino) -- you know...it may be enjoyable but this is extremley overrated...the technical aspects of it are clunky and awkwards (see the edits and a lot of the framing) and it takes them forever to say they went to France or are going to rob a resturant, and the whole Wolf sequence could've been easily cut -- he doesn't serve a real purpose -- and everything they need to figure out could've been figured out with a rewrite. Despite all this, it's kinda fun to watch, though it doesn't really age well either. B-. This is where we disagree. As much respect as I have lost for Tarantino as a person, this is still one of my favorites... and I think it aged quite nicely.

After watching so many things in HD, the movie theater has lost it's luster for me too Term. The picture always looks grainy. The only GREAT experience I've had is seeing the HD Disney screen for Nightmare Before Xmas last year. That was as great as my home theater system (just bigger). Even the Imax has it's issues....(the biggest being the $14-15 price tag).

THE FINAL CUT (2004)
A powerful and understated Robin Williams stars in this sci-fi film. According to this movie, people can have a microchip implanted in their child before birth, that will record every moment of their life. The chip is removed upon death and the images are then edited by cutters into a kind of "highlights reel" of the deceased person's life, so that loved ones can view the film at a ceremony called a Rememory. Kind of like a wake with home movies. Williams plays a cutter named Alan Hakman. Get it? Cutter? Hakman? Hack Man? Nice.
The film brings up questions of privacy. Would you want a complete stranger, the cutter, to be able to watch your entire life, as seen through your eyes, after your death? Think of all the stuff that happens to, or is done by, an individual over the course of a typical lifetime. From potentially embarassing things like sex, masturbation, having your sexual advances rejected or throwing up after drinking too much, all the way to much worse stuff like any crimes you may have commited. Would you live your life differently if you knew everything was being recorded for someone to watch later?
Of course, while working on a Rememory, Williams' character sees something he wishes he hadn't, which causes a dilemma. And on top of that, his character is also haunted by a childhood tragedy. Throw into the mix, groups who are opposed to the whole concept and are constantly picketing and waving signs, think anti-abortion activists.
I thought this was a really good and original movie overall. Not exactly an action movie, but I was never bored. It's sci-fi, but don't expect something really visual like BLADE RUNNER or MINORITY REPORT. This is more like CHILDREN OF MEN. It takes place in the near future, but there isn't very much on-screen to identify it as science fiction. This is more about the characters and situations than it is about cool, futuristic hardware.

Below- It was a nice try by Aronofsky and co. to make a good film, but it didn't reach it's potential. B-.
Live Free or Die Hard- Of course it feels out of place with the Die Hards, but it's not as good as them but still extremely fun in its own right. Justin Long is funny and that scene in the tunnel was INSANE. I must say the editing was terrible. It worked as PG-13 but it should've been R. No question. B+.
A Man for All Seasons- It took awhile but this movie grew so much on me. Paul Scofield is excellent, and Robert Shaw was absolutely fantastic here. I wish Shaw was more prominently featured in the film. The cinematography was great, the music was nice, it was just a well made period piece. A+.
Transformers- Don't kill me for saying this: I loved it. I just had a ball with this movie. The special effects were a-mazing. Shia LaBeouf is funny, Meagan Fox is muy caliente, and Peter Cullen's voicing of Prime was beast. It's a great easy time at the movies. Now on the other hand, there is no character development like at all. And for what's there, it's total cliche. Then again, it is a Michael Bay movie. And I must say, Michael Bay's best film too. All in all, A-.

Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese) -- a brutal, not your average sports film where the team or person overcomes odds to be a better person and interact better with everyone...in fact, it's quite sad and no matter how many times you see it, you can feel the pain in those fights. A-.

Man on Fire (Tony Scott) -- the cinematography gave me a headache, Denzel and the rest of the crew waltzed through as if they had nothing better to do, the plot was predicatable and you could see every twist, and the action wasn't all that thrilling...or prominent. Still, it holds your attention for whatever reason. C+.

MAY (2002)
Weird little movie about a weird little girl who grows up to be a weird young woman. Yup, this is one weird movie.
May is the young woman, a shy recluse with no social skills. Her only friend being a doll in a glass case. She tries to make friends, but her awkwardness and general strange ways always ends up driving people away.
May finally snaps and starts killing people that enter her life, cutting off the "best parts" of each victim and sewing them back together as one person. Kind of a modern Frankenstein, without the castle and angry villagers.
The movie is atmospheric at times and a little creepy, but I found it a little too leisurely paced, ie: slow, and a few too many attempts at humor. It's hard to relate to the character of May, a good performance by Angela Bettis btw, but there's no one else to connect to either because everybody in the movie is weird.
Not what I expected and sometimes being surprised is good, but this wasn't really one of those times.

Charade
I don't know if I should make a movie police entry out of this, because this is the first Audrey Hepburn movie I've ever seen. And I loved it. I loved her in it, I loved Cary Grant, Walter Matthau, the story, the unpredictable twists... everything. Excellent suspense flick. 9/10

Yep Phoenix, I was kinda shocked. I usually hear great things about video quality in theaters & this one I went to isn't a run down theater. Its 20 miles out of my area. There are ones closer but they are basically shacks.
American Me (1992) (HD DVD)
HD Video - 7/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 8/10
The Big Lebowski (1998) (HD DVD)
HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 8/10
Bulletproof (1996) (HD DVD)
HD Video - 8/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 9/10
