1408 - I enjoyed it. John Cusack can really carry a movie - he was excellent. The simplicity of it was so refreshing. Allowing the film to rely on mere claustrophobia instead of visual effects was one of the smartest things they could have done. And while the movie wasn't quite as scary as one might hope, it instead winds up being very unsettling and has more of a long-term appeal. I'm gonna have difficulty sleeping tonight. Any horror flick that does that is definitely a winner in my book (the last one to do that was the Ring). 8/10

1408 (2007)
After a terrific set-up, some great dialogue between it's two stars, John Cusack & Samuel L. Jackson are excellent, and some cool scares early on, the movie starts to run out of steam. One or two scenes definitely gave me goosebumps, but the ending was kind of a letdown. It felt tacked on and like I'd seen it before. A better resolution would've made this one excellent. Still, it's pretty good for a while there.
7/10

Die Hard
One of my all-time favorites. John McClane, one of the greatest cinematic heroes of all time taking on Hans Gruber, one of the greatest cinematic villains of all time. Yippie Ki-Yay, motherfucker! 10/10

Die Hard 2 - A far cry from the first (missing the Hans Gruber factor), but still a fun and satisfying action flick. Definitely Renny Harlin's best movie to say the least. 8/10

Evan Almighty
Not really a laugh-out-loud funny picture, but it's made up for with underlying themes and charm (brought on mostly by Steve Carrell). I thought it was pretty good. 7/10

Die Hard: With a Vengeance
Simon isn't necessarily Hans Gruber, but he's close enough. Closer to the spirit of the first film thanks to the return of John McTiernan, and Zeus was a nice touch as well. Very entertaining flick. Can't wait to see part 4. 8/10

Serial Mom - Very dark, very funny. That's a great J.Waters movie! This past weekend I caught: Bridge to Terabithia - even though I knew it wasn't what it was promoted to be, I was still disappointed. It's My Girl with lamer characters and stunted fantasy. I can see how it would be much better in novel form. 3/10 Shopgirl - I had listened to this book on tape (novel written by steve martin and was narrated by him on the tape) and really liked it. The movie was pretty much the same thing as the novel. It's believable (I've known many a girl with a temporary sugar daddy who couldn't commit) and funny. Good casting too. "A chick flick" I'd recommend. Runs a little long. 7/10

Munich (Steven Spielberg) -- Spielberg makes a 70s style political thriller not so much around the idea of "Yeah, let's go kill those terrorist bastards!" but more of "What happens when you respond to something evil with equal evil?" and "Is this ever justified?" Hard questions and a great movie. A.
