Ocean's Thirteen
I loved it. Keep in mind, I also enjoyed the second one which I'm aware isn't exactly popular. But I felt this was an improvement over the second film. It maintains the same style and the same quirky characters with the Robert Altman-esque dialogue and more... sophisticated humor. A nice addition to the summer third-parters, and I would not be surprised to see an Ocean's Fourteen sometime in the near future. I'd watch it. 8/10

Corpse Bride (Mike Johnson, Tim Burton) -- not on the same level as "Nightmare Before Christmas" but it's still a fun, enjoyable romp, even if it does lose focus and pacing several times. The real winner here's the cinematography, the palette of colors is...to die for. Couldn't resist. B.
NOTE: I think one of the biggest thing lacking was a real showstopper. You almost need one in a musical. I mean, "Nightmare Before Christmas" had the "What's This?" "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" the Time Warp. "Happy Feet" that massive dance in the middle when Mumble returns home....

Hostel: Part II
Eli Roth got sloppy with this one, making Rob Zombie's mistaken assumption that gore and blood alone can make a movie (of course, Zombie learned from this and fixed it when he made his sequel, but I digress). Needless to say, it does not. It earns a couple of points for the first torture sequence - which I must say was awesome, but the rest of the movie had major flow problems, and too much trying to be like Tarantino (who as we all know made it by copying other filmmakers). I know Eli Roth can do better. His biggest mistake was attempting to do Hostel more than once. 3/10

SLITHER (2006)
THE BLOB, THE THING, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, EVIL DEAD and many, many others are referenced or paid homage to, in this campy, shlocky, B-horror flick. And I mean campy and shlocky in a nice way. This was actually a sometimes funny, sometimes gory throwback to 80's style splatter, with people getting their heads blown off and one guy even getting split in two. Pretty good old school effects. The cast seems to be having a good time, especially Michael Rooker playing a character improbably named Grant Grant, who is the first victim of a small town alien invasion and gives an over the top, scenery chewing performance. Fun if you don't take it seriously. When it comes to modern horror, I'll take this over yet another crappy, pointless remake ala THE OMEN.
7/10

Mr. Brooks- Kevin Costner and William Hurt are diabolically good in this pyschological thriller. Although a bit uneven, the film is much better than it looked. B+.

Blood Simple2/4-eh, the other Coen movies I've seen so far I've liked better than this one.

Paper Moon (Peter Bagdonavich) -- probably the best father/daughter movie ever made as well as the conman movie with the most heart. Complete with great performances all around. A.

Surf's Up - So what, are penguins gonna take the Oscar three years in a row? So far, this one-ups Shrek for best animated feature of 2007. Shia Lebeouf was awesome, the animation was fantastic, and the movie was creative and funny. Even though it's another penguin movie (I think by now it can become its own genre), it still manages to be a fresh addition to this batch of summer movies, and it's nice to see what it looks like when they do animation right. 8/10

We've been avoiding the theater - matinée prices are now $7 and with gas and electric bills sky high we're sticking to netflix until there is a "sure bet."
Watched some of the Rocky marathon that was on TV yesterday and The Hitcher (remake) - it was bad, of course.

The Hitcher (remake) - it was bad, of course. Ew, I have that one on my Netflix list..I guess I shouldn't make it a priority watcher? Derailed 2/4- Not too bad, and I honestly didn't see the twists coming.
