Apocalypse Now - Funny Pulp should mention watching it as I was in the middle of watching it. Couldn't finish it due to finals, but I did it tonight. One of my favs. Great film. 10/10

The Departed (Martin Scorsese) -- no, it doesn't hold water to Scorsese's masterpieces but that doesn't stop it from being a really really really really really really really really really really really good film now does it? A-.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Guillermo del Toro) -- People say it's del Toro's masterpiece and I have to say that I like it better than when I first saw it. So I'll jack up the rating of B+ to the one I gave "The Devil's Backbone" personally, and say, A-.

Die Hard (John McTiernan) -- probably one of the best pure action movies ever complete with sustained shots (not that frantic let's show everything from every angle Michael Bay bullplop), stunts instead of computers, and a hero who winces when he steps on glass but can take a bullet in the shoulder pretty easily. Yes, it's completley ridiculous, but it's exceptionally entertaining. One of those movies you just start watching and can't stop. I never liked the very end, though, when the writers realized that one character hadn't grown or something. A-.

Georgia Rule
An improvement of Marshall's previous film (Raising Helen). It was overly dramatic at times, but that doesn't mean the three female leads didn't do a good job. Jane Fonda was excellent (and I wish she would show up even more), Lindsay Lohan was great in a real grown-up role, and I hope I see her do more of it. Felicity Huffman doesn't quite live up to her Transamerica performance... she was great, but not as great as she could be. Overall, it's mainly three great performances in one good-but-not-great film. 7/10

The Great Ziegfeld - A great "Singin' in the Rain" musical-slash-biopic. For its time, it was fantastic. 9/10

Die Hard 2 (Renny Harlin) -- too over-the-top, full of slow-mo deaths and just dumb. D+.
Die Hard with a Vengence (John McTiernan) -- kinda misses the whole "Die Hard" point, but whatever, it's still fun. B.

Alpha Dog - I'm pissed my friends went and saw this without me while I had to wait for its DVD release... because I thought it was excellent. Justin Timberlake is a good actor! Seriously. And I think Nick Cassavettes is a great film director. His movies don't fare too well with critics, but John Q, the Notebook and Alpha Dog... I loved this guy's movies. What can I say? 8/10

GET... OUUUUUUUUUT! Just kidding. But seriously, Psycho '98 was the SAME EXACT MOVIE as Psycho '60, except in color and with a scene where Norman masturbates to Marion undressing. That's pretty much it. Gus Van Sant is a fantastic film director (see Good Will Hunting and My Own Private Idaho), but this film was just one of those movies like... why would you make that? We already HAVE one. And more than that, he's no Hitchcock. I've never seen Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO and unless I catch it on tv sometime for free, I never will. Speaking of completely unneccesary remakes, this past Monday I watched: THE OMEN (2006) A pointless, by-the-numbers remake with no real surprises. It sticks so close to the original, that even though it was my first time watching it, I felt like I'd already seen it before. On top of that, the supporting actors completely outshine the two leads. Veteran actors, David Thewlis as Keith Jennings the photographer, Pete Postlethwaite as Father Brennan and Mia Farrow as Mrs. Baylock give it their all, but Julia Stiles, and especially the emotionless Liev Schreiber, sleepwalk through their roles as the Thorns. If younger people would rent dvds from a category other than the "New Releases" section from time to time, they would know that there was already a really good movie called THE OMEN and would stop supporting this crap. Carpenter's THE THING and Cronenberg's THE FLY. That's how you do a remake! 4/10

I thought Part 2 was a really fun sequel, but didn't care for With a Vengeance very much.

Eh, we could've done without either of them, I think. The first was great as it was. But the new one looks dreadful. I mean, one thing, it has the iMac guy as the sidekick. And another, it's directed by the guy who did "Underworld". That's two strikes already.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry) -- probably one of the most profound but ultimatley sad romantic comedy movies ever. Brilliant, yet still sad. A.
