Disturbia- It's not a remake of Rear Window, though there are a lot of similarities (that are intentional). Now that's out of the way: good movie. Well written (way to go Carl Ellsworth) and acted, slick, suspenseful, and of course enjoyable. But predictable. B+.

So if it's not a remake then it's a rip off?
The Lost World: Jurassic Park -- amazing to think that in Mr. Spielberg's very prolific career this is his only, what?, third sequal (thank you Dr. Jones). And despite some really cheesy moments (gymnasits) and probably some of the least common sense driven scientists on the planet (oh, I'll just keep wearing the jacket with the baby's blood on it, I'm sure nothing will come of harm). The dinosaurs don't look as real as the first time around and the film isn't shot towards showing the dinosaurs, because there are a lot more reaction shots in this one than the previous but once those carniverous dinos come in, man, the tension doesn't let up. Once again, they're portrayed as animals moreso than monsters, with the Rexes just trying to make sure that their baby is safe (best moment of the film: the daddy tyrannosaurus gives baby Rex life lessons when offing a particular bad guy ((go on, son, just chomp him up))). And the tyrannosaurus through San Diego scene was probably the best big creature in the city sequence since the ORIGINAL "King Kong" (the hell with the newest ones). Or maybe since the Japanese Godzilla (Gojira) stepped into Tokyo. No, its not as good but definitley a worthy sequel. B+.

I really should see it again. The Matrix RevolutionsIs it just me, or is everyone just really hard on third parts? Sure, some films deserve it (Superman III, Jurassic Park III, X-Men III), but I feel this joins the ranks of The Godfather Part III in underrated third parts. It was a worthy entry to the series IMHO. A fine epic sci-fi battle sequence, and that final fight scene between Smith and Neo was sweet! A+

So if it's not a remake then it's a rip off? Yeah, I guess.

Dreamgirls- The singing and songs were excellent, but the rest of the movie was just singing. Did Hudson deserve the Supporting Actress award? I guess so. She really impressed me more with her singing than her acting though. B.

Marie Antionette -- whoever sez that this is a historically accurate movie has missed the point entirely. All it did was try to put a face on a person often misrepresented by everyone. It's fun, there's lots of great music and eye candy, though the third act starts dragging. And Kirstin Dunst is perfect. B+.

It was a worthy entry to the series IMHO. A fine epic sci-fi battle sequence, and that final fight scene between Smith and Neo was sweet! A+ Well, Matrix 2 & 3 were actually just 1 long film cut in half ala Kill Bill.. but I agree, I really enjoyed the third. I wonder how different 2 & 3 would have been if "Tank" didn't quit on the Wachowski's & if Aaliyah didn't die in that plane crash.. For all the challenges they had to endure, I think the WB's pulled off a miracle with the sequels. One Last Thing... (2006) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10 HD Audio dts - 9/10 I am finding most, if not all Magnolia titles, a wash when comparing the DD to dts tracks. Kinda feel like they are just wasting space by providing the 2. ahh well. Dialog is crisp & clear throughout, surrounds rarely used, (not a complaint, just an observation) as well as the LFE channel. Audible output is mixed around 10db lower than most dts tracks I've heard but again this is just an observation & not a complaint. Turn up the volume & overall this soundtrack is very consistent throughout. The PQ is soft throughout most of the film's runtime so rarely any three-dee-ness to the picture which is my only complaint. No noise, no film grain, color reproduction is excellent. No macro, no bleeding, no edge enhancement. A solid transfer & a near 10 all around.

Perfect Stranger - Let me start by saying, and I will stand by this 'till the end of the year, the actors all did a fine job. Berry, Ribisi and Willis gave fine performances in this film. I emphasize this, because it's rare that I find something good to say about a movie I really didn't like. And I did not like this movie. The main reason is, well... we've seen this before. A thousand times. Every bit of it. Even the "twist" everyone's been talking about. So the movie pretty much sucked. But when a terrible movie has a redeeming quality, you gotta put it out there. The actors were great. If only they were all in a better movie. 3/10

Shortbus -- graphic, but not really erotic. Personally, I don't think its as good as "Hedwig" but what can you do? B.

HELL IN THE PACIFIC (1968)
An American pilot and a Japanese officer find themselves marooned on an uninhabited island during World War II. Will they put aside their differences and learn to cooperate long enough to either get rescued or figure a way off the island or will they end up killing each other? That's the setup of this film which stars Lee Marvin (THE DIRTY DOZEN) and Toshiro Mifune (THE SEVEN SAMURAI) and was directed by John Boorman (DELIVERANCE, EXCALIBUR). Both stars have a strong presence and it's interesting for a little while, but the movie kind of goes round and round. First one has the upper hand, then the other, then the first again. And because they speak different languages, there is almost no dialogue. If you've ever seen the 80's sci-fi flick ENEMY MINE, then you saw the remake of this film. In that one, Dennis Quaid and Lou Gossett Jr. starred as a human and a lizard-like alien, respectively, who find themselves marooned on a planet after their two spacecrafts are damaged in a space battle. Not a great movie, but it has a little more fun with the concept and at least the alien learns to speak English so they can communicate a bit more.
6/10
GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES (1984)
8/10
