Bought Super Mario Galaxy and it really is the GREATEST GAME EVER. Holy crap is it inventive! Creativity abounds in there! The levels are clever, the graphics are just gorgeous and the music is brilliant--especially during Bowser battles.
This game also has some of the best boss battles of any Mario game to date because you hardly fight any two bosses the same way, and the game goes beyond the traditional "three hits to beat the boss" rule found in most Mario games. Some take four hits, some take only two, but have a massive battle leading up to when you can actually hurt them. Some you stomp, some you smack, some you stomp, then smack--swing Bomb Boos, throw koopa shells, knock back projectiles, catapult Mario into weak spots.
There are some Stars earned by painfully collecting coins, but they're more inventive than a traditional "fetch-quest," as one of them has you timing controller movements to change Mario's flight direction through space to zip around and run through streams of coins suspended in space.
There are under water races, surfing races, puzzles where you move Mario around by "blowing" on the sides of a bubble (with him inside), terrifying (grrr!!!) balance puzzles where you move Mario around as he's perched atop a "glass" ball. A few quests to save Luigi. Three special "challenge" stages. Bosses that must be battled with Mario in one of his various suits, like Ice Mario, Spring Mario, or Bee Mario. One boss literally dwarfs the tiny planet on which you fight him, and you have to run up it's legs to the top to fight it. Comet challenges like racing a bizarre "space Mario," or having to complete an objective without getting hurt once, or having to complete an objective in a given time limit.
If this doesn't get Game of the Year, something is truly wrong with the world. The first half of the game feels like it might be too easy at times, but like a true Mario game, the difficulty ramps up eventually. I've gathered about 76 of the 120 Stars so far.
Also, I got Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii, which is just about the best on-rails "light gun" shooter I've ever played. The Nemesis battle was freakin' sweet. Playing as Wesker is cool as hell.
And finally, I played Guitar Hero for the first time ever. I cleared almost all of "Easy" mode and found that I actually really like the game. Go figure. I thought it was just a lame gimmick, but it actually feels pretty cool. A lot of crappy music in there, though. Mostly in the secondary section where you "purchase" it with money earned in the regular game. Very annoying that it doesn't save High Scores or stats in the regular story mode of the game. I kicked some major ass on the White Zombie song--I only missed about 4 notes, and had my longest streak for the entire time I played the game--well over 200 notes hit in a row. My band name was "Assguts."
Unfortunately, Soul Calibur Legends is getting shit reviews, which is a major let-down. I wanted a nice action-hack-n-slash type game to go with the other 18 games I have for the Wii (including 11 downloaded). Next up: Battalion Wars II or Geometry Wars: Galaxies.
Still haven't finished Gun on the GameCube or Max Payne on the GBA, but I'll get to those in time, I'm sure. There's bound to be a drought in games released around the second quarter of next year. No More Heroes comes out in February, and I have to have that.
