Titanic, on the other hand, IS a good movie. Please note the use of "good" instead of "great", though. Agreed.

Well, Titanic WAS great in a sense that it had all the attributes that make up a great movie... with the exception of some awkward dialogue.
It just doesn't SEEM great under all the hype that was built up over it. But seriously, I don't know of too many people who weren't blown away the first time they've seen that movie.

And sorry everyone, but Titanic was a movie I flatly refused to see--and I continue to stand by those convictions!! It's always interesting to me when someone flat out refuses to see a movie they've never seen. Yeah, the Celine Dion song is ass, and I'm as sick of it as everyone else, but the movie itself is actually quite good, imho. But I'm sure you have your reasons. A) all the hype built an incredible disinterest in me. B) (you're gonna like this one Heiney) when it usurped Star Wars in box office gross--Star Wars was s'posed to be number one, dammit--it disrespect'd da FORCE, man!! One of my friends refused to see it for the same reason! C) never a big fan of Leo "pretty boy" DiCaprio. Aviator was a fantastic movie, but I'm still no Leo fanboy. (And I was interested in it because of the Howard Huges subject matter)

Quorthon,
Its JAMES CAMERON man!! I don't care if he made an all out "chick-Flick" I'd see it because JAMES CAMERON, the best director EVER period directed it.
Ok, I think James Cameron kicks ass, but aside from that, you already missed out on Titanic in my opinion Quorthon unless its re-released into theaters. This film had to be seen on the big screen.
A) Hype - never heard or read any. B) Didn't know or care at the time, how much money it was making. C) Leo has been in or has made some decent pictures, but the ship is the "star" in Titanic.

You actually reminded me of the other reason I didn't care to see Titanic: James Cameron abandoned the Terminator series for it. Titanic became his "big damn epic" instead of T3--and I was none too pleased. I've been with Terminator since I was a wee lad. At least T3 was still good, but imagine if Cameron had been with it... No sir, I think I may just continue not seeing it. I can see Kate Winslet's tits somewhere else. Like in Quills. Hoo-hah. Maybe one day, but not right now.... (sorry)

Ditto on all three points. I saw it opening day because Cameron directed it. No hype sucked me in. Other than that it took place on the Titanic, I didn't really know what the plot was. And all one has to do is watch WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE with a young Leo to see that the boy can indeed act.

Not a big fan of Gilbert Grape. Liked Johnny Depp and all, but wasn't a big fan of that movie.

Okay, so Q has literally squashed every idea why he might actually enjoy TITANIC. I think it's safe to assume, we're beating a dead horse, here.

But if it makes yah feel any better, I turned myself over to the Movie Police. And since we're talkin' about Dreamy Leo here, you want to know what his best movie really is? Critters 3.(ha ha ha ha ha!!!)

Sinse this discussion I decided to watch it again last night. Some films.. you scratch your head at when they win best picture at the academy awards.. blah blah blah. Ok I'm not gonna contribute to even more hype, (sinse the Oscars are now a distant memory to me after they did their black appreciation year) & its Quorthon's decision to see what ever he damn well pleases. I am not in shock he hasn't seen it, but why not?
Have ya seen The Blair Witch Project? Quorthon

Yeah I did--hype notwithstanding.
It looked interesting and unique to me. Generally, hype doesn't affect what I see. Hell, I'm one of the only 15 people in the world that liked Waterworld and actually saw it in the theater. Yeah that's right! I know where you're goin' with that question, man!
There were just several reasons for me not to see Titanic.
Also, Oscar winners, for me, do not translate instantly to something I'm going to enjoy. Remember how much crap I watch and like? I think CHUD and Piranha are "classics." I think "Evil Dead" is the bestest movie ever. I have a Box Set of the Toxic Avenger movies (sans excellent Part IV). Robocop is one of my favorite films. Let's just round this off by saying that Titanic just didn't call to me. You know, the way "Bubba Ho-Tep," "Gozu" or "The Machinist" did. All of which I managed to see on the big screen.
And I liked the Blair Witch project--and thought the second was quite above average for what Hollywood was doing at the time.

Okay, here we go with another list of ten films that I feel are essential for any film fan to see. For the next couple of lists I'm tackling the 1970's. Now, imho, the 70's are the best decade for film, bar-none. Some of the best movies ever made came out of the 70's. More classics than in any other decade as far as I'm concerned. Some of our greatest actors and directors did some of their best work during that time too. For this list I'm gonna focus on only Dramatic films, so no comedies, sci-fi, horror, etc. At only 10 per list, I feel I would really shortchange the decade if I took on every genre of film. Plus, as stated before, I don't want to overwhelm anyone with a ton of movies in one list. Again, these are listed by year of release:
THE GODFATHER (1972) Coppola kicks off the list with a bang. DELIVERANCE (1972) Burt Reynolds was uber-cool in the 70's. PAPILLON (1973) Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are prisoners on Devil's Island. ENTER THE DRAGON (1973) Bruce Lee, the greatest Martial Arts star, in his best film. THE GODFATHER PART II (1974) Al Pacino takes over the family and Fredo is no help at all. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) Jack Nicholson is running the asylum. DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) Pacino robs a bank and everything goes wrong. And again, Fredo is no help at all. ROCKY (1976) The ultimate underdog tale. TAXI DRIVER (1976) Tom Cruise was lucky he didn't get in DeNiro's cab. APOCALYPSE NOW (1978) Coppola closes the list with a bang.
You've seen all of these, right?
