I'm counting Citizen Kane as "seen" even though when we were trying to watch it with spacer lately we both fell asleep. Hmm... has it really been seen if your eyes were closed? Isn't that a bit like "listening" to music with earplugs in? CITIZEN KANE is a good movie, but it's not exactly "action-packed". Maybe you started watching it too late in the evening?

We started watching it after too many beers, I think... However: we saw enough of it to get the picture, please believe me. This just isn't a type of film I could start to love. I would never say "This is shite!" as I know it helped to shape cinematography and all, but it's just not my cup. To put it bluntly: "Citizen Kane" ain't no "Zombie Flesh Eaters". ;D

I've seen Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, and Schindler's List.
Wow. I suck.

I would never say "This is shite!" as I know it helped to shape cinematography and all, but it's just not my cup. Oh yeah, too much beer and CITIZEN KANE. A lethal combination indeed. It's cool that it's not your cup of tea, or glass of beer, as the case may be. You at least gave it a chance and attempted to watch it. As I've said, these aren't all neccesarily my all-time favorites either. But like you said, CK is such an influential and revered movie that all true film fans should at least give it a shot. You don't suck Quorthon. You've obviously seen many, many movies. The point of this thread was mainly to expand people's horizons to other types of movies that they might not typically watch. Maybe the next time you rent movies, you'll check out one or two of these "essentials" along with what you might typically rent. And that's for everyone, not just Q.

True words Heineken speaks! And Quorth - do start with The Graduate, will you? This, I think, is my favourite on the list. Though not seeing The Godfather is quite an accomplishment, too.

I've never seen On the Waterfront or Lawrence of Arabia fully. I've seen bits and pieces many times but never sat through a full viewing of either one.
Citizen Kane is far from my #1 movie as well. When I saw it though it was a poor print - I'm assuming they've digitally remastered it and shapened up the blacks/whites a bit since then which may be better for a viewing.
I think on the list The Graduate, Gone With The Wind, The Godfather and Casablanca are what I would say are my personal favorites.

I actually borrowed The Graduate from a friend (whose DVD collection makes mine look pitiful) but when my life hit a roadblock and the wife and I had to move I ended up returning it to him unwatched--never got to it, or Chinatown for that matter.
And hey Heineken, whether or not Hollywood wants to admit it, horror films have been a major part of film history--there's never too many. Maybe if you're not necessarilly splitting up the lists by decade, you could do by genre. NotLD 1968 is one of the greatest films of all time--and I'm not just saying that as a Romero fan, it really is. The remake isn't, but the original is a pure film classic. It's simply amazing to think that it was filmed on weekends over the course of about a month.
Also, if you watch Nosferatu and then Coppola's Dracula you'll notice that Coppola made a film not just his vision of Dracula, but as an homage to the art of films and filmmaking--and Nosferatu in particular. It uses effects, transitions, style, and imagery that just isn't used anymore. Just thought I'd throw that in to show the importance of Nosferatu.

I will eventually be doing some Genre only lists, and so forth. And no worries, I would consider both those films "essentials" as well. Patience, grasshopper.

Definitely give the newer Special Edition DVD a try. The transfer looks fantastic. Well, Term. That's better than your average for the pre-1940's list.
