THE DEER HUNTER (1978)
Classic about three young buddies who go to Vietnam and how it affects their lives and the lives of those they left behind. Stellar performances by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage as the friends and great supporting turns by Meryl Streep and the late great John Cazale. The Russian Roulette scenes are still as intense as I remembered them. 7.5/10

Garden State--- I liked it when I saw it in theaters and when I rented it on DVD again, but as I watch it's not one of those films that gets better with each viewing and feels overrated.

80's 'Slasher' blandness (for the most part, though it has it's charms) in the hairy form of "Berserker: The Nordic Curse" which features good old George 'Buck' Flower sporting an ear grating Norwegian accent!

Fright Night Part 2- Good horror/comedy/sequel with a hilarious performance from "Napoleon Dynamite's" Jon Gries (he was Uncle Rico).

mag-no'li-a.
"It's not.. what you thought... When you first... began it. You got... what you want... Now you can hardly stand it, though, by now you know, it's not going to stop... It's not going to stop... It's not going to stop, till you wise up. You're sure... there's a cure... And you have finally found it. You think... one drink... Will shrink you to... your underground and living down, but it's not going to stop... It's not going to stop... it's not going to stop, till you wise up. Prepare a list for what you need, before you sign away the deed, 'cause it's not going to stop... It's not going to stop... It's not going to stop, till you wise up. No, it's not going to stop, till you wise up. No, it's not going to stop, so just give up...."

Cube 2: Hypercube. The series' weakest link, no doubt. 4/10.

Watched last night:
SPARTACUS (1960)
Hadn't seen it in years, but this is a damn fine "sword and sandal" epic. Kirk Douglas gives an understated performance as the gladiator/slave who led a revolt against the Roman empire. Sure, like most movies of this type, some creative license is taken, but overall, nothing for the cast or crew to be embarassed about. The supporting cast is fantastic, led by none other than Sir Laurence Olivier and fine turns by Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton and Peter Ustinov.
Great sets, costumes, and some really good gladiator and battlefield scenes. Some gore and scenes of sexuality which were fairly risque for 1960 as well. Of course, the scene with the most sexual undertones can only be seen in the restored version which features Olivier and Tony Curtis and an exchange about "oysters and snails".
And kudos to director Stanley Kubrick, who was actually a replacement for the original director. 8/10

Started my "Sharpe" box set and watched "Sharpe's Rifles", "S. Eagle" and "S. Company". Superb stuff.

DECONSTRUCTING HARRY (1997)
Just watched it for the first time and now it's one of my favorite Woody Allen films. Allen stars as Harry Bloch, a writer suffering from writer's block (Bloch, get it?), and over the course of the movie he has many flashbacks to various events in his life, and we also see the way he fictionalized them in his various books. A neat gimmick of the film is that characters are sometimes played by two different actors, the real person in his life and the fictionalized "book version" of that same person, complete with a slightly different name, ie: Jane becomes Janet. A favorite scene of mine was Woody in Hell, having a chat with the Devil (Billy Crystal). Devil: Would you like me to turn up the air conditioning? Harry: You have air conditioning in Hell? Devil: Sure, it fucks up the ozone layer.
Great stuff. 8.5/10

The Crying Game (1992)
WHOA! WHAT THE FUCK! I DIDN'T WANT TO SEE THAT!
You know, I should have seen it coming, what with the Adam's apple, large hands and pecs instead of breasts, but...
THAT WAS SO UNCALLED FOR!
The mature review coming soon.
