Saw this movie this weekend and unfortunately the theater was full. Five older women sat next to me and did NOT KNOW WHAT the movie is about and were very upset. I guess they lived in a freakin' cave. So they were a bit disruptive which sucked.
Other than that issue I would agree with Smitty's review 100%. Very beautiful, haunting film. I do hate how they 'age' the actors though - it can be so silly. The movie spans a couple of decades and to make Jake look older he sports a silly mustache by the end. It can look comical and shouldn't - especially as serious as the movie is.
The movie did live up to my expectations, it's making money and getting praise for very good reasons.
It was also incredibly depressing.......
8/10

Evidently, some people think "strong family values" means "no gay people". I know. It's maddening when groups like FotF, American family Assn. etc. get all upset at the mere mention of it. I don't know how many times I have seen things from these groups about movies and TV programs about "THERE IS A HOMOSEXUAL CHARACTER ON THIS SHOW!" and therefore it is a tool of Satan and watching it is a straight freeway to perdition. Never mind what kind of behavior is or isn't being discussed or shown. Like such people are not supposed to exist. I guess I do have a bias being bisexually oriented myself but this was a beautiful sad movie. Not "homosexual propaganda" at all--if there is such a thing, but certainly some will call it such--,in fact it was up front about the flaws in the relationship, both men's being torn between their love for their wives and their love for each other (and Jack's infidelities to Ennis). Not at all "this is great, go do this", but "it happens".

Not at all "this is great, go do this", but "it happens". Yes. In fact, director Ang Lee is not gay. Screenwriters Larry McMurty and Diana Ossana, heterosexual. Actors Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, heterosexual. The movie was made on an unbiased viewpoint by heterosexual people. It's not propaganda, but it shows more than just "it happens". It shows that even though their sexual orientation is different, their still people. It's great how these guys aren't tight-clothes-wearing guys with great hair and lisps, but cowboys. I applaud the movie for showing gay people in a nonstereotypical light. It's an important move in the right direction for diversity. It definitely deserved the Oscar for Best Picture... but then again, so did Crash. ;D

Well actually not cowboys but sheepherders. Some Westerners might shoot you for making THAT mistake. ;D

From IMDb.com:
Randy Quaid has filed a $10-million lawsuit against the producers of Brokeback Mountain, claiming they misled him into believing that the film was "a low-budget, art-house film, with no prospect of making any money" so that he would sign on at a low salary figure. Quaid said in the lawsuit that he originally was approached in 2004 by director Ang Lee, who told him, "We can't pay anything, we have very little money, everyone is making a sacrifice to make this film." In fact, he says, the film has proved to be a box-office hit, grossing around $160 million worldwide. Quaid charged in the lawsuit that he was the victim of a "movie laundering" scheme intended to obtain his services as an actor in Brokeback "on economically unfavorable art-film terms."
My response:
Are you fucking serious? Aside from Kingpin and a couple National Lampoon flicks, what has this guy done that makes him worth anything to the industry? In fact, he was pretty fucking worthless in Brokeback Mountain, too. They could've got Larry the Cable Guy to play his part if they really wanted to.
And really, it's a movie about 2 gay sheepherders. It's naive to think that you're NOT taking major financial risks by making the movie. The only reason it made money was because it was so damn good.
