There was much discussion last week of a possible fourth film in the Terminator franchise with (shiver) McG possibly directing and Vin Diesel maybe doing his blank, robotic best as the murderous robot. Well, today official word comes that there will be a further Terminator movie. Followed by another two. Yes, folks, it's a "re-invention".

Warner Bros has acquired the rights to the series and plans to get "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" into production in early 2008. A screenplay has been written by Terminator 3 scribes John Brancato and Michael Ferris, but the studio says that no decision has been made on a director. Please do not make that decision in the direction of McG.

"This is set in the future, in a full-scale war between Skynet and humankind," said Derek Anderson, CEO of Halcyon, who'll produce the thing, confirming the widely held belief that we would finally see a roboto-a-mano war.

T3 exec producer Moritz Borman added, "The third film was really the conclusion of what happened in the 'now.' You will find the most-loved characters, but the intention here is to present a fresh new world and have this be the first of a trilogy." The issue of whether Arnie will return will apparently be down to the Austrian one, but there is a part for him if he wants it.

Now, we'd be very excited to see more Terminator movies if they're as good as the first two and lord knows we really want to see that war. But, that word "re-invention" niggles. What's to re-invent? James Cameron's films were incredible and, aside from a couple of dated effects shots, look just as good today. Does this series need a new identity? Can any Terminator movie without guaranteed Arnie be Terminator in anything other than name?

Well, Terminator fans? Do we like this idea or hate it?
I'm going to withhold judgement until I hear more plot ideas, and a director and cast are announced...

Sign me up. I've enjoyed the first three, and hopefully with Diesel they can go into being more action-oriented than they used to. Sounds good to me.

I meant the first two. The last one wasn't as much to my tastes, beyond the cemetery shootout and the crane chase. Those where the only ones I felt were any good, and would really like it to go back to the style of the first two.

Vin Diesel? You've got to be fucking kidding me. I'm so sick of that guy. New characters? What's in store for John Conner? And who'd play him? Or is he even in there?

I can kind of see a fourth movie, but to "reinvent" the whole trilogy reeks of yet another Hollywood remake shitstorm. We saw the war in the other, still exciting, still thrilling, still awesome films.

This sounds like some bad news.

From the sounds of it, it sounds like it features the war we saw so briefly in the first two. They'll make it a feature-length tale rather than a few glimpses here and there, which I wouldn't mind at all.

We don't like having to say this and we're really really hoping that someone somewhere has gone this wrong, but JoBlo.com say they have received trustworthy confirmation that McG will be directing the fourth Terminator movie.

There have been rumours for a while that the Charlie's Angels director would shout orders on the first of the planned new trilogy, entitled Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, but rumours don't always come to fruition.

McG should probably be given the benefit of the doubt here, since he must have done something to convince Warner Bros that he's the best man for the job, but we worry that he's not sufficiently established as a director to handle one of the most anticipated events in movies: the war between Skynet and mankind. This needs to be absolutely spectacular to match what we've all had in our heads for over two decades. He's got some action style, if some difficulties holding a story together, so it could be that this movie either makes or breaks him. We'll hope for the latter.

Shooting is set to start early next year from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris (Terminator 3). With Arnie, Nick Stahl and Claire Danes not set to return, we're concerned that this could wind up not feeling like a part of the Terminator universe. Please let this work, please let this work, please let this work.

Personally, I absolutely hated McG's CHARLIE'S ANGELS and from the bits and pieces I saw of the sequel, that one was just as bad or worse, so this news doesn't thrill me.

That's confirmed, Heiney. I read it on Bloody-Disgusting this morning and was about to post it but apparently you beat me to the punch. Bale is indeed playing the older Connor in the new film.
