THE BLACK HOLE (1979)
The crew of a spaceship accidentally finds another ship that had been considered missing for the past twenty years. The newly-discovered ship is on the edge of a black hole, which the ship's only human inhabitant, a mad genius, and his crew of robots, plans to enter.
In the wake of such late seventies hits as STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and ALIEN, Disney decided to throw its hat into the sci-fi ring with this movie, and imho, almost nothing here works. Considering it had a budget of $40 Million, and was released in the midst of the above mentioned titles, it looks really dated and cheap. If it had been released in the late sixties or early seventies it would look pretty impressive, but in '79?? The effects leave a lot to be desired, the dialogue is laughable, and the whole thing is an ill-advised attempt to combine the derring-do of STAR WARS with the intellect of 2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY. And it commits what I consider to be the cardinal sin of movies, it's a crashing bore!
2/10 (Two points for unintentional humor)

The Blues Brothers (John Landis) -- seriously, name me one other musical with this many car chases. You just can't do it. A.

The Innocents (1961, Jack Clayton) This was genuinely creepy. There's something about English kids and Haunted Houses... Did think the governess was quite stupid though. 8/10 I tend to think of this one when I see the slow-burn horror done right. Not that a lot happens, but instead it builds up atmosphere effectively with a little bit here and there, and it always stays interesting because of that.

ZATOICHI CHALLENGED (1967)
In this entry, Zatoichi the blind swordsman meets a dying woman and agrees to take her son to his father, an artist whom the boy has never met. Things are never that simple though and Ichi discovers that the man is being held against his will to work off a gambling debt. Along the way, Ichi also has several encounters with a samurai who as his own agenda having to do with the artist. One of my favorites in the series so far.
8/10
BLOOD DIAMOND (2006)
An ex-mercenary (Leo DiCaprio) and a fisherman (Djimon Hounsou) team up to recover a rare pink diamond that can change both their lives in this movie set in Sierra Leone during the late nineties amid civil war. Both actors are fantastic and director Ed Zwick (GLORY, THE LAST SAMURAI) adds another feather to his hat.
9/10
STAY (2005)
A psychiatrist (Ewan McGregor) tries to save a suicidal patient (Ryan Gosling) in this movie where reality gets blurred and nothing is what it seems. Honestly, I found the resolution, which was pretty cool, much better than the actual trip to get there. Unlike movies like THE SIXTH SENSE and THE OTHERS, which are entertaining even before we get to the mindfuck twist endings, this one was just kind of dull.
3/10

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006)
The true story of the soldiers who raised the flag at The Battle of Iwo Jima in that famous photo. As WWII movies go, this one's pretty good, but it's no SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The battle scenes are graphic and well done, and learning the true story of what happened that day, the aftermath on the soldiers and the pic's effect on America is interesting, but the movie as a whole just seemed to be missing something. Looking forward to seeing the companion piece LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA.
7/10

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006) It was good, but Letters from Iwo Jima had much more heart to it. That's what I've heard from pretty much every source. Watched yesterday: THE SENTINEL (2006) A secret service man (Michael Douglas) is framed and accused of being involved in a conspiracy to assassinate the President. He escapes arrest by other agents and then tries to find the guilty culprits. Oh yeah, and he was having an affair with the First Lady (Kim Basinger). Okaaayyy...... First of all, let's talk casting. As soon as I saw that Douglas was playing the agent and Basinger was playing the First Lady, I knew they were having an affair. Come on! It's Michael Douglas! Keifer Sutherland plays another agent, Douglas' protege and former best friend. I've never watched "24", but doesn't Keifer Sutherland already play this type of role every week? And finally we have Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives") as a rookie agent partnered up with Sutherland. She's nice eye candy, but just seemed out of place in a political thriller. Honestly, it looks like Sutherland and Longoria were cast just to capitalize on their popularity on their respective tv shows and help bring in a wider audience. The whole thing is by-the-numbers and no real surprises or twists occur. If you're paying any kind of attention, you can see how the whole thing will unfold and resolve itself pretty early on. It's not a complete piece of crap, but it's just a "timewaster" kind of film. Meaning, watch if you have absolutely nothing else to watch. 4.5/10

To calm myself after the Halloween marathon:
Scary Movie 2-Still holds up nicely after repeated viewings, enough gross-out to keep it entrenched in that style while still so many side-splitting moments to keep it entertaining. Some jokes wear thin, but all in all still great fun.
Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th-Shoot me for this, but this is the movie "Scary Movie" wishes it could be. Not only is this so hilarious it hurt, but for once it stays on target and actually spoofs the films of the genre rather than the mainstream movies of the time. It's still pretty stupid, but it's fun enough and contains enough humor to be rewarding.
High School High-Another guilty pleasure film, I just think this is funny. I don't know why, but it just makes me laugh, and that's all I ask from comedies when I decide to watch them.

Hostel 2 - a slick flick that had much less gore than I expected considering the first movie made me sick to my stomach. It was short, sweet, and the story wasn't half bad either. 7/10.

Yeah i watched these two films like two weeks ago but I've been too busy/lazy to say i saw em:
Au Revior Les Enfants- Wonderful coming of age story, very poignant, very believable, heartwarming. It was a feel-good movie in a way with excellent characters. Loved it so much. A+.
The Black Hole- Unlike Heiney, I must say I enjoyed this one. I thought for the seventies the effects were very good and that the robots made the whole movie. It was very cheesy but that's the point. Look at the blockbusters of today. Effects loosely wrapped around a story. Just a movie you can shut your mind off and enjoy. B.
