Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005, George Lucas) with Rifftrax
Hilarious track by Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy, on one of those movies you just know had it coming. Not that it was a terrible movie by any stretch, but let's face it - it's an easy riff.
With or without Rifftrax: 8/10

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (James Cameron) -- probably Cameron's best film, made at the height of his talent. The chase scenes are great (and there are a lot of 'em), the villian is beyond cool (no pun intended), and it's only hindered by a kind of boring middle (dream sequences, Mexico....), some random bouts of bad acting from Furlong (overall he's decent), the voice-over narration, and then that kid with a mullet. B+.

The Kingdom- Saw it on friday night but didn't get on the computer till now. Fabulous. Wasily the best movie of the year and may retain that position. Foxx, Garner, and Cooper all deliver, and the Saudi general guy was a great supporting performer. Breathtaking action and a lot of great political points. Highly recommended. A+

Knocked Up (Judd Apatow) -- more sweet than funny; a girl's romantic comedy in drag. B.

MIAMI VICE (2006)
Big screen adaptation of the 80's tv series. The tv show was pretty good and fun and entertaining. The movie is boring and overly plotted and Colin Farrell was miscast. He sleepwalks through the film and didn't have an ounce of the charisma or wit that Don Johnson had in that role. The fact that Michael Mann, one of the driving forces behind the tv series, directed this mess, makes it even worse. Highly disappointing.
3/10

I love how the two leads never talk to each other, and a good 45 minutes to an hour of the movie doesn't even take place in Miami. And I can't get enough of that police jargon. I mean, isn't it great not understanding what the characters are saying? Lola (1981, Rainer Werner Fassbinder) (Viewing Assignment for Language of Cinema) Interesting, albeit slow dramedy about a courtesan who falls in love with an older man who does not know she's a courtesan. Great use of color by the production designer. 8/10 Persona (1966, Ingmar Bergman) (Viewed in World Cinema class) Sure, Bergman. Ram your brilliance down our throats, why don't you? As great as this movie is (and it is), I don't think I can ever watch it again or my brain will explode. You can see where David Lynch got some of his inspiration though. 8/10 The Sting (1973, George Roy Hill) (Viewing Assignment for Story Stucture) Great con film, with the legendary team of Redford, Newman and Hill. Although I preferred all of them in Butch Cassidy, this film was as fun as it was complex. 8/10 Hero (2002, Yimou Zhang) (Viewing Assignment for Language of Cinema) I love this movie more and more every time I see it. Zhang's work in this film is simply visionary, and it's sad that it took Tarantino's name to sell this piece of cinematic art to American audiences. Excellent use of color to establish each chapter's feel. This is real cinematic poetry. 8/10

Knew I was forgetting something...
The Kingdom (2007, Peter Berg)
Very well made film. Its biggest strength would be its resonating theme (which I'm gonna let you figure out for yourself). Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are in top form, and the tension (both cultural and suspense) never lets up. Great work from director Peter Berg (although you can see Michael Mann's touch show itself from time to time). 8/10

Sick day viewing:
Man of the House-Hits just about every single variant on the housemates-who-can't-stand-each-other-but-soon-grow-to-like-each-other book, but at least it keeps the attention with some nice surprises along the way and a few pretty good jokes throughout. 7.5/10
Dodgeball-Really funnier than I expected. For some reason, people getting hit in the head or crotch with anything is funny no matter how many times you see a person gutted, and this one is no exception. Again, too many cliches, but still pretty funny. 8.5/10
