Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj
I was outvoted by my friends, who liked the first one. I should mention that I didn't like the first one. And I didn't like this one either. It did manage to pull a chuckle or two out of me, but as a comedy, it was just one big Indian joke mixed with another big British joke. D-
Falling Down
An underrated 90's masterpiece. I just can't believe the same director is responsible for Batman and Robin. A+
My Cousin Vinny
God, I love this movie. Marisa Tomei was fantastic, and the writing was brilliant. A
The Sandlot
A childhood favorite. Great story about friendship and baseball. A-
Superman Returns
The comic book movie event of the year. I have nothing negative to say about it. At all. A+
Troy
Underrated old-fashioned sword-and-sandal epic. Peter O'Toole's performance really stood out to me, and I still don't see why it wasn't received better. A

Superman Returns looks great in HD.. The film I thought was all over the place with not much character development.
Great popcorn muncher flick. I didn't have any popcorn though!
That about sums up SR

Boogie Nights - One of the greatest movies of all time. What the hell happened to Burt Reynolds? It seems to me he made this movie, and then his career tanked. Seeing him in this movie, I know the guy is capable of doing great things. A+

The Da Vinci Code
The problem I had with the movie was the same problem I had with the book: unmemorable characters. Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu are just not very good characters. Not saying anything about the actors, who did a fine job, it's just the characters didn't have anything going for them. The only character in that movie one would look back and vividly remember (and not because of his hair) would be Leigh Teabing (Ian McKellen).
Other than that, the STORY was great. It DID seem rushed, though... I would have liked to see a longer film that could fit in a little more information from the book. I hear tell that Europe got an extended DVD release. Why not here, I wonder? I'd LOVE to see that. B-

Apocalypto
Jesus Christ (no pun intended), this movie was awesome! It was very intense and beautifully shot. Filmed in a dead language, but you still care about the characters, and you really root for the lead, Jaguar Paw. Excellent film all around, not religiously motivated. Critics need to stop rating the man and start rating the movie. Granted, it IS Mel's weakest (in my opinion), but keep in mind I hold both the Passion and Braveheart in very high regard. A-

Babel -- Now, normally unless I'm very upset with a picture will I ever actually curse at it, but goddammit, this movie fucking sucked. Granted, the acting was good but that was about it. You could see the director (I can't spell his name so I'm not going to bother to write it) sitting behind the camera saying, "Hmmm . . . I wonder how I can make these people suffer even MORE?" Seriously, the fact that most of the horrible events are happening to one family is hard to believe. Their mom got shot and they almost got deported on the same day? Please. Any storyteller can tell you there's usually this little thing called CHARACTER, which almost every single one lacked. They were just there, bad things happened, and you were supposed to feel sympathy for them but why should we? Apparently Brad Pitt did something wrong, but THAT never actually got sorted out. The Japanese girl was interesting for a little while but that took a turn for the worse after a bit (and I kind of predicted her link into this entire mess). The stupid thing also leaves a lot of questios unanswered like, Where did Gael Garcia Bernal go? The ending was incredibly convienent, where it's relatively happy (except for the maid who gets really screwed over for doing something for herself, odd...). This thing should've been called DUES EX MACHINA because that's what it felt like the entire time. If there was something going on about different languages, well, "Lost in Translation" handled that a lot better. The only reason I won't give this an F, even rarer than an A+ is because the actors are very good. You do forget about it being Brad Pitt (looking like George Clooney actually). Think of it as "Lost" meets "Crash", except worse (and "Crash" is already pretty bad). Predicatble, tedious, convienent, stupid, forgettable. D.

I thought this was more like Syriana, except much more interesting. I felt all the stories were intriguing, and I don't think there was anything really convenient about it. Where Bernal went, I like how we don't know. Kinda leaves it up to the imagination. I loved this movie. In my opinion, it was one of the best this year.

Witness the genius that is Darren Aronofsky. An artistic and somewhat insane motion picture of David Lynch proportions. B+

Wait Until Dark -- creepy, intense thriller about a blind woman who deals with three men trying to raid her house for a doll stuffed with heroin. The last twenty or so minutes, when Audrey (who is always a delight) smacks out the lights, well, let's just say I didn't check the time on the DVD player or make a single sound. And then that one scene with Alan Arkin.... Oh God. Tell though, is this an early feminist film because Audrey does seem to be able to outsmart the guys at every turn, even with her handicap. B+.
