Horror Round-Up from Moviehole:
Finding a stringy eyeball in my minestrone soup provoked such a round-up of genre who's doing what and whoms.
I believe I was drowning in a vat of whiskey with caramel popcorn spillings on me when the first "Mangler" was on, so I really do need to watch that again to refresh my memory, but I do remember the sequel. For better or Worse. It was Ok, but only in that 'so bad, it's good' sense. Dead Central and Bloody Disgusting are reporting that a third film in series is on the boil, tentatively titled "The Mangler Returns". Matt Cunningham and Erik Gardner are penning the script, again about a guy who becomes possessed by a machine, with the intention that it be less like that 'so bad, it was good' stencil of the sequel, and more of the legit scares of the original Englund starrer.Cunningham tells the former site that they are "going back more toward the concept of the original Stephen King short story with a few little twists in there. It's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets a J-Horror film. Real dark and gritty." Lions Gate - again, 'the new home of horror' - are apparently going to distribute the movie, which will be in theatres - or more likely, video - late next year.
Bloody Disgusting got onto the set of Lions Gates "Dark Ride" with 'Sopanos' hottie Jamie-Lynn DiScala - that's exactly what a night with Jamie-Lynn would be; a dark ride -and has a full report of what they saw, and who they got into conversation with.
Remember "The Dark" the horror pic Anna Paquin did a while back? You do? You don't? Whatever - the trailer for the pic, now titled "Darkness" which will hit multiplexes at Chrissy time, is now online. Go to it.
"Saw" creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan are back in Australia at the moment for the film's premiere and got talking to the SMH about the riches the film has bought in for them. "I hate ATMs telling me 'insufficient funds'," says Whannell. "I hate those two words coming up on ATM screens. Every time I go to an ATM, I'm like '$200'. 'Insufficient funds'. 'OK, $100'. 'Insufficient funds'. How about 50? Give me 50!". For the full interview click here.
Ryan Reynolds is all done with "The Amityville Horror" remake and tells folks on the Blade Trinity boards a little about it. "The movie is being handled with the utmost care and respect. We'll clear up a lot of unanswered questions, and perhaps reveal some more. You won't be disappointed." Why all the horror Van? "I think a mixture of good fortune, willingness and timing... I love what I do. I'm grateful to be here and I want to try different things. This year I have 3 completely different types of film coming out. If you told me a year and a half ago, I'd be doing a Blade movie, Amityville etc., I'd have simply laughed at you and gone back to selling used diapers on e-bay." And what's happening with "Deadpool"? "It's now being talked about in the press. I have absolutely NO PLANS TO PLAY DEADPOOL. I had a couple meetings with Avi Arad from Marvel about it. But inevitably nobody seems to have any idea how to bring Wade Wilson to the big screen".
Lions Gate are reportedly working on an "American Psycho : Special Edition" DVD to coincide with the release of Christian Bale's "Batman Begins". No word on whether the mooted "American Psycho 3" is still on the cards, but that should hold Bateman-buffs over for a while.
DVDAnswers have some early details up for the "Grudge" disc. The Feb release is said to include "...an audio commentary with Sam Raimi, Ted Raimi, Sarah Michelle Gellar and more, a sixty minute documentary divided into multiple sections and an Under the Skin featurette which sets out to give a medical explanation of the fear response in films". Talking of "The Grudge", rumour has it that the sequel script won't feature SMG's character.
"Final Destination" star Tony Todd got talking to milenko500.com about some of his upcoming movies, including "Candyman 4". "Yeah, I've been meeting with Clive [Barker] his representatives, and the production team. I know their was a rumor when the whole "Freddy vs. Jason" film came out that Miramax wanted to do a "Candyman vs. Hellraiser". I think Clive wisely opted against that. He didn't want either of those 2 characters to sell out for a commercial gain. He is very strongly interested in "CANDYMAN 4". That problem that is going on much like many backstage workings, is determining who owns the "CANDYMAN" franchise. Which is strange to me because it's Clive's Character? But in dividing the first "CANDYMAN's" profits, the ownership went from Propaganda, to Sony, to Columbia, then to Artisan. Then Artisan became Lions Gate. As soon as it's all straightened out and it's determined who has to be paid before the film even gets written, then the movie will move forward. But he has every intension and knows how much these fans really appreciate a true horror classic. We've been in active discussion about doing it. I know it will take place in New England. It will take place in a woman's college. I know we're going to use the seasonal elements such as snow. We're just waiting for the Go-Ahead to move forward. Hopefully it will be shot sometime next year. We're not gonna let it go. And if for some reason we can't get the character back from the powers that be, then we're going to re-create it. One way or another, Clive and I will be working together again. I can absolutely assure the fans of that." Todd also confirms his involvement with "Final Destination 3-D". The IMDB added "Final Destination 3" to their listing of, well, everything. They've got a 2006 release date mentioned, and the names Glen Morgan and James Wong in the directors box.
UIP Brazil have had some artwork from Peter Jackson's "King Kong" sneak out the door and onto the net. You can check it out here.
Mischa Barton ["The OC", "Hexx"] has joined the cast of "Black Autumn", according to Fangoria. In the horror pic, she'll play the "bitchy roommate" of the lead character played by Evan Rachel Wood, a newcomer to a girls’ school who uncovers scary secrets there. Michael Apted is directing.
Country Singer Randy Travis has joined the cast of "The Visitation", playing a minister who tries to debunk the false Messiah. Co-starring Edward Furlong and Martin Donovan, there's a full report on the flick over here.p

A good interview with Larry Cohen (the director of It's Alive! and scriptwiter of Cellular) can be found here. Larry talks mainly of the upcoming It's Alive! remake (directed by himself), but also on how he got Bernard Herrmann to scoring his movie instead of The Exorcist or on how Spielberg ripped him off in Jaws - oh yeah, good stuff!

Stigmata director Rupert Wainwright is set to direct the remake of John Carpenter's classic The Fog. Not good news, is it? I ask cause I still didn't bother to see Stigmata. * * * Here's how Ron Pearlman looks in the upcoming Stephen King-based mini-series Desperation; ahh, handsome!

Stigmata was ok, but nothing spectacular. The Fog is yet another remake that shouldn't be done. Can't wait to see the Desperation mini-series. When is it supposed to be finished? I really haven't read anything about it.

HORROR ROUND-UP FROM MOVIEHOLE:
Yep – studios love the slice and dice right now. Let’s work our way through a batch of who’s, what’s and when’s, relating to the blood gurgling genre.
Renny ‘Sloppy Seconds’ Harlin will direct a big screen version of the graphic novel “Full Moon Fever”, for producers Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter . "We both think that 'Deep Blue Sea' is one of the best films in its genre, said Alter, "and I remembered that Renny was originally developing the third installment in the "Alien" franchise back in the early 90s. So it became a mandate to get him on this project." The pic will be set in the not-too-distant future and center on a group of blue-collar workers who are sent to repair the deserted first lunar base on the dark side of the moon and who fall prey to a pack of ravenous werewolves.
Extras for the Feb DVD release of “Saw” have been announced. It’ll include commentary with Director James Wan and Writer/Actor Leigh Whannell; an "On The Set" Featurette, the Music Video for Fear Factory's "Bite the Hand That Bleeds," the Making of "Bite the Hand That Bleeds" Music Video, Trailers and TV Spots. Not a bad set at all! Meanwhile, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, James Wan and Leigh Whannell are apparently only going to produce the sequel – they won’t be involved in any part of the writing or directing errands.
Dimension films will turn “The Darkness” comic into a feature. It’s the story of a 21 year old former assassin who inherits an unholy power, passed through the family, called “the darkness”. A video game is also being developed. No word on director, cast or producers yet.
Lijas Library has a first look at Ron “Hellboy” Perlman in Captain Hotshot -gear for the TV movie adaptation of the Stephen King book “Desperation”. Despite being made for the tube, the pics look grand – might this be a goodie?
James Gunn stopped by Dread Central to let them know how his new pic “Slither” is going. “hat I'm really being influenced by here is a combination of '80s horror movies because what happens is this alien disease takes forms and works its way into the populace whatever way it can," explains Gunn. "Some of that change is zombification type stuff and a lot of it is mutation type stuff. It's very Cronenberg-esque and it's very influenced by the tone of Manga artist Junji Ito's Uzamaki." He adds, "It's very much an ensemble piece but structurally it’s quite different because we have different protagonists for different parts of the movie. The first protagonist actually ends up being the most infected and worst creature of all," Gunn says with a chuckle. "The movie will change a lot. The thing is to try and take a high concept and bring a new element of this ridiculous fucked up disease and give the audience something to freak out about and laugh at."
According to The Digital Bits, there could be two different DVD’s of “Blade Trinity” released next year. They’d be a theatrical version and an 11-minute longer director's cut featuring a darker, alternate ending to the film.

'PINHEAD' COMING TO TV... from Moviehole: Happy Christmas Doug Bradley.
While horror-fans wait anxiously for the long-delayed Pinhead sequels, "Hellraiser : Deader" and "Hellraiser : Hellworld", Panacea Entertainment, Park Avenue Entertainment and Blueprint Entertainment are developing a TV series based on the popular horror icon, created by Clive Barker.
According to Variety, Larry Kuppin, whose New World Entertainment did the first two "Hellraiser" films, will executive produce the hour-long series with Eric Gardner.
In the show, a journalist (Kari Wuhrer possibly? reprising her part from the forthcoming "Deader"?) stumbles upon a plot between Pinhead and a smarmy zillionaire software magnate that could spell doom for us all.
There's no writer attached to the project's pilot as yet - hopefully Barker's free.It doesn't actually SAY if Doug Bradley will be reprising his role for the tv series...but it just wouldn't be right if he didn't play the part.

Sorry, but all I read was, "Blah, blah, blah, Kari Wuhrer possibly, blah, blah, blah..." ;D Right, Bart? Why don't they just give Pinhead his own late night talk show and be done with it already? "Tonight on Latenight Hellraiser! Pinhead's guests are Will Smith! From the hit series, Desperate Housewives, Teri Hatcher! And musical guest, Velvet Revolver! Now, here's your host, PINHEAD!!" (Wild applause)

Sorry, but all I read was, "Blah, blah, blah, Kari Wuhrer possibly, blah, blah, blah..." ;D Right, Bart? Right it is! ;D The Hellraiser TV series worries me, in fact. If I get to watch it - Heineken has already revealed the only reason for it. And The Mist finally on screen? Oh, yeah! It's been a long enough wait! And Frank Darabont helming it - very cool!

Why don't they just give Pinhead his own late night talk show and be done with it already? Maybe he can be the next Letterman....or w/ the bald head I guess he would be more like Paul Schafer.

NEW MCFARLANE TV SERIES... Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has partnered with AngryFilms to develop a half-hour anthology series for the Fox network, called Twisted Tales. Fox TV Studios' alternative division is producing in association with Todd McFarlane Entertainment and Angry Films. Episodes will focus on tales of horror, fantasy or sci-fi, and McFarlane himself will serve as host of the show, introducing each episode from a basement environment.
"There is nothing on television that is scary or creepy enough for me, week in and week out. It is my hope to be able to deliver a series that will keep the audience consistently off-balance and frightened" says McFarlane. Other series went to the easier fit idea of multiple stories in an hour, and inevitably one of the stories was bad. Here it's one story, one episode, bang -- we gotcha" says Murphy.
Past projects of the company include Pearl Jam's animated music video "Do the Evolution," Korn's mini-movie-style video for "Freak on a Leash" and Jodie Foster's critically acclaimed "The Dangerous Lives of the Alter Boys."Sounds like it might be pretty cool!

That sounds really cool. I enjoyed the Mcfarlane Spawn animated series that ran on HBO too, and I would def watch this new thing.

Is it going to be animated??
McFarlane presenting each episode in a basement? Um, isn't that exactly what he did on the animated SPAWN series? 1/2 hour anthology shows like this never completely work no matter who's behind them. TALES FROM THE CRYPT, AMAZING STORIES, the 80's TWILIGHT ZONE, the recent TWILIGHT ZONE w/ Forrest Whittaker, etc. Good luck to them.
