If you haven't seen this yet, I'd advise against it.
The film is as I have feared; it's about two people floating in the ocean with sharks. THAT'S IT. You've got two or three cheap jumps, and an hour and a half of NOTHING happening. By the time stuff DOES happen, you just don't care anymore.
I guess critics went easier on it because it's an indy. Well, independent filmmaking is NOT a viable excuse for POOR filmmaking. Same as a higher budget, low budget does not necessarily a good movie make.
THE SMITTY DOES NOT APPROVE.

Yeah, the critics are really raving about this one. Hmmm... So, you think all those descriptions of JAWS meets THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT were exaggerated??

More like Jaws: The Revenge meets Blair Witch 2.
I honestly felt that this was worse than Van Helsing. And Catwoman. Not quite as bad as You Got Served, but close.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who has this opinion. 90% of everyone I talk to absolutely LOATHED this movie. I lost count of the many people walking out of the theater saying, "That movie sucked", and "You people shouldn't charge money for that." Oh, how many times I wish I could tell the customers to invest their money into something worth watching, like Collateral. But alas, that would be against our policy.

Look on the brightside you get to tell everyone here, and in the long run no doubt you'll affect more people!

I have a slightly different opinion on this. As a movie, it wasn't all that great. The main problem is that the actors are terrible. The first 20 minutes or so of "character building" should've been thrown out. The movie should have started on the boat, but since it was short already, I guess filler was needed. Although I don't think it was great as an all-around movie, I thought the scenes with the sharks were quite good. Especially the one during the thunder storm. All I was expecting was a movie to provide some decent jolts and cheap thrills, and I did get that much out of it. I only know 2 other people that saw it. One really liked it and one hated it. When it ended in the theater I heard a couple of guys saying it was awesome and a couple of others saying it was boring. I'm kind of in the middle. If they had edited it down to the 25 minutes that did entertain, I'd probably recommend it.

I haven't seen all skark movies made since Jaws, but I saw a bunch of them and I think Open Water is better than any of these.
True: the "character building" at the beginning is a bit boring (but there's unexpected nudity there, so it's not all bad; and it's not 20 minutes long, by the way - 10+, I'd say), the soundtrack is annoying and the movie has a cheesy taste of a bad indie flick at times, however, when the tension first starts to tighten its grip on the characters - it doesn't let go until the end. I liked the acting, too.
A shark movie that I was watching with a serious face, and felt for the characters - now that's something! In our usual scale, I give it 7/10.

So it's not all bad news for OPEN WATER then, huh? Bart, better than JAWS 4: THE REVENGE and DEEP BLUE SEA?? Say it ain't so. And what about the current SHARK TALE??

I hold no high hopes for Shark Tale. Jaws 4 was (in my weird opinion) better than Jaws 3-D, and Deep Blue Sea was a pleasantly cheesy dish, but... er, yeah: Open Water still beats'em all!

Never saw JAWS 3D, no interest, and out of curiosity, recently saw the last 30 minutes of JAWS 4 on tv. (Horrible.) DEEP BLUE SEA was dumb, but it was on HBO and I had nothing better to do. I don't have much interest in SHARK TALE either. I think when I finally see it, OPEN WATER is probably going to be the best "shark movie" since JAWS by default. Its competition is pretty poor.

I didn't like the film AT ALL. The begining was promising although I regret the fact that the main characters were sketched -somehow - not clearly enough?? - I could accept the main characters floating in the ocean for most of the time but I the ending really killed me I desperately wanted a different ending!!!!

Sorry, Bart. I must disagree. Deep Blue Sea was WAY better than Open Water. At least Deep Blue Sea provided us with some no-brainer entertainment. Open Water bored me to tears... and yes, Shark Tale was better too.

SPOILER ALERT
Open Waters was a bit slow in the beginning, but once the water came on I really enjoyed the suspense. I was hoping for a positive ending, but that didn't become.
I guess in the beginning the couple really had no beefs or qualms about what they were planning to do, but that eventually came out when they were in the water.
It was a sad state of affairs that those people were left behind.
The sound wasn't that great because it was shot with a I believe a single DV camera. I am not too sure if they even used a boom mic. The person probably just used an external top mic to do his sound, and possibly an internal camera mic. I could tell by this when the couple was in the motel room, and the quality of sound on the boat.
