- American horror story: Coven.
Missed this week's Grimm, but on the other hand I got to see the alternative ending for "Breaking Bad" (as in, not the ending everybody's already seen, but an extra something the producers cooked up). Great callback to not one, but three great series from the past.

Also been watching "Mom" on the on and off... I can't quite make up my mind about it. On the one hand, the premise is very interesting, the character interactions more complex than they seem at first (really, this could easily be a Todd Solonz movie, with the character's resentment for each other stimming below the surface of their happy exchanges) and lead Anna Farris is terrific. On the other hand, the actual humor in display is often a little too simple-minded for my tastes. In the best case it could be like "The big bang theory" where the writing actually improved significantly as the seasons went by, whereas in a lot of sitcoms it's usually the other way around.

I'm glad your enjoying Mom, for I feel pretty much the same way (repeating myself but that was essentially what I said: the off-kilter relationship dynamic was pretty different from what was presented on TV and gave it an edge that was sorely lacking) and am right on with you in terms of BBT how it got better as it went along. The first few seasons were good but once it got to the fourth or fifth season, it grew into my favorite show on TV because it was utilizing more facets of it's storyline to play with (basically once they all got girlfriends on a consistent basis and Penny and Leonard solidified their relationship) while still keeping true to the original intent of the show which is what really appeals to me. That is being done here though it doesn't seem to take as long to do so, which is what's a little impressive about how it's going about its' running time.
That, to me, is why I'm such a stickler for having a premise that can last for several seasons when shows first start up: what happens when it does go that long? How is it supposed to stay fresh and interesting viewing while being true to the original premise at that point?

Yeah, that's about right; it works because of the character dinamic; the original ones developed whitout becoming different persons (which is what happens in a lot of long-running sitcoms), and the new characters proved to be well-written in that they are: A. Interesting enough on their own, and B. Provide new angles on the already existing characters --for example, we see the women developing their own dinamic, which is similar but actually not identical to the guys'; and at one point we can even have a subplot carried by minor characters but by the time that happens it feels natural.
In the case of Mom, it's the obvious jokes (ex. "Kids are dumb!") that don't quite work for me, but the overall plots do work --in particular each week's conflict stems either from the family's lack of economic resources or from their established relationships, and this grounded in reality approach works very well in comedy, I think.
- Supernatural.
Also, reruns of "Bates Motel", which are worth bringing up because this is one of those series that actually improve on multiple viewings, as you see how well-ploted the mysteries are.

- Grimm.
- American Horror Story: Coven. Well, that was a pretty good ending, IMHO, even if the last scene could have been done better. I think the first season ("Murder house") was better, or at least the ending was. I have yet to see "Asylum", but will get to it. I'm definitely looking forward to the next season, which will be called "Circus".
The highlights: lots and lots of gore, and when the witches actually remembered to use their powers, they were impressive --Marie speaking in tongues to make two policemen shoot each other and doing Voodoo on a witch hunter. Myrtle gouging out her betrayer's eyes. Zoe chopping up zombies with a chainsaw. Queenie killing the fuck out of Hank. Nan making Madison put a cigar in her vagina. And the Axeman getting butchered by the witches --twice! The musical bits worked pretty well, too.
What didn't quite work: the story was often all over the place; it seems the 13 episodes could have been compressed to 10 or so and they'd still work. Also, the most incompetent witch hunters in history. It would have been nice to get a glimpse at other covens all over the world, as by the ending it's clear there were a lot.
On the aditional plus, Papa Legba was a nice late addition to the cast, I think.
