LOONEY TUNES: GOLDEN COLLECTION - VOL. 3 (Disc 2 - 15 shorts. The bonus features on this disc include Part 1 of the documentary, WHAT'S UP DOC? A SALUTE TO BUGS BUNNY.)
GIRLFIGHT (2000)
Michelle Rodriguez stars as Diana Guzman, an 18 year old tough girl with a major chip on her shoulder. Constantly getting into fights at school and confrontations with her dad, she decides to start training as a boxer at the local gym where her brother trains. Diana starts to show real talent for the sport and in the process meets a young boxer who she develops feelings for and brings out her more tender side. Good screen debut by Rodriguez and the flick avoids a lot of the usual "sports movie" clichés.

LOONEY TUNES: GOLDEN COLLECTION - VOL. 3 (Disc 3 - 15 shorts. The bonus features on this disc include Part 2 of the documentary, WHAT'S UP DOC? A SALUTE TO BUGS BUNNY.)
CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR (2007)
Based on fact story about Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), the US Congressman who, along with a CIA agent (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and a rich socialite (Julia Roberts), helped supply the Afghans with the weapons they needed to fight the invading Soviet Union in the 80's. More entertaining than I thought it would be and Hoffman especially is really good.
7.5/10
SPLINTER (2008)
A young couple who are out camping, are carjacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend, and the foursome ends up at a deserted gas station. There they encounter a parasite that takes over and transforms its still living hosts into... something else. While it's reminiscent of several other horror movies, especially Carpenter's THE THING, Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and Raimi's EVIL DEAD, hey, if you're going to steal, steal from the best, it's still an action-packed and entertaining horror ride. A fast-paced 90 minutes that gets going pretty much from the very beginning, and only really slows down to introduce the main couple. And for a low-budget flick, the effects and gore are really well done.
7.5/10
ROLE MODELS (2008)
After an argument with a tow-truck driver gets out of hand, a couple of immature guys in their 30's (Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott), who work for an energy drink company, are given the choice of jail or community service. They of course choose community service, which in this case, is to participate in a Big Brothers type program called Sturdy Wings where they are to mentor kids. The guys are assigned a medieval role-playing geek and a foul-mouthed kid who would have been at home in the original BAD NEWS BEARS. Much funnier than it looked in the trailers. Some great scenes in here that fans of the rock band KISS will especially enjoy. Cut from the same cloth as recent comedy hits like I LOVE YOU, MAN, SUPERBAD, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, etc., so if you liked them, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

The Virgin Spring (1960)
In 14th century Sweden, the young, virginal daughter of peasant parents is raped and murdered by goat herders. Later, the murderers unwittingly end up seeking food and shelter from the girl's parents. A dark and tragic tale of loss, brutality and revenge. At the end, it is a little heavy with the religious elements for my tastes, but overall, a powerful film. And maybe of interest to some, it was the inspiration for Wes Craven's Last House On the Left. Its actually the first Ingmar Bergman film I have seen, but it won't be the last.

MUTANT CHRONICLES (2009) Watched this last night on HDNet TV even though it doesn't officially open in theaters until this weekend. Weird, huh? It's the year 2707, and the world is ruled by four corporations that are at constant war. During battle, a machine is reactivated that transforms humans into mutants. Don't ask. A suicide mission led by Thomas Jane as a no-nonsense soldier, and Ron Perlman, a man of the cloth, sets out to destroy the machine and stop the mutant hordes. Imagine ALIENS, but where none of the soldiers have a real personality, meets 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, set in a future that kind of looks like it's taking place during World War I. Visually interesting and watchable, but ultimately forgettable. Many things, people and mutants get "blown up real good!". Kind of like a Sci-Fi Channel movie, but with better production values. Check your brain, don't ask too many questions and enjoy your popcorn. Glad I didn't pay 9 bucks to see it. 5/10 JOSHUA (2007) 9-year old Joshua seems to be the perfect son. He's intelligent, well-behaved, musically talented, has perfect hair, etc. However, when his parents bring home newborn Lily, and Joshua realizes that little Lily is getting more attention than him, he gradually starts to tear the family apart. Lily's constant crying (What could be causing it?) is driving mom to a nervous breakdown, the family dog suddenly dies, dad's concern is causing his work to suffer, Jewish mom and Christian mother-in-law are pitted against each other, etc. Psychological thriller in the mold of "evil kid" movies like THE BAD SEED and THE GOOD SON, but anyone expecting a THE OMEN type of horror flick will be disappointed. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. And dammit, I really wanted to love this one. Based on the trailer: www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2331837209/ , I expected it to be far more horrific. Jacob Kogan, the kid playing Joshua, is effectively creepy though. Ultimately, it felt like a lot of suspense was built without a really effective resolution. 6/10

SEMI-PRO (2008)
Will Ferrell goes to the sports comedy well one more time and mostly comes up with mud. This time he's Jackie Moon, a disco-singer, ABA basketball team owner/coach/player desperately trying to get his team, the Flint Tropics, into the NBA. Ferrell's big dumb man-child act has really gotten old. Almost any of his classic SNL skits is worth watching over this uninspired flick. There is zero character development for everyone else in the cast and most of the humor just fell kind of flat. Woody Harrelson's character seemed bored and like he was in a different movie. He was probably wishing he was back in WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP, a superior basketball movie. Not the worst movie I've ever seen by any means, but it all just felt like "been there done that" without much effort being put forth.
4/10
ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (2009)
Documentary about Canadian heavy metal band, Anvil, who first formed in the late 70's by best friends, drummer, Robb Reiner and lead vocalist/guitarist, Steve "Lips" Kudlow, and promised they would keep the band together until they hit the big time. They came close during the eighties, when metal and hair bands were at their peak, but for some reason fame and fortune just seemed to elude them while all their peers and other bands they influenced hit it huge. Now in their fifties, we see the band go on a promising European tour where things quickly turn sour, no promotion, empty halls, missed trains, non-payment, poor management, etc. We also see them record their 13th album in the hope that they'll finally fulfill their rock star dreams. Lots of interviews with the band, their families and fans, and the movie runs the gamut of emotions from really sad to hysterically funny. You have to give Robb and Lips credit for sticking to their guns for over thirty years when most people would've thrown in the towel a long time ago. Even if you're not a fan of the band or this kind of music, by the end of it, you'll be cheering for them and hoping these guys finally get their due and at least some money. A real-life Spinal Tap, only sadder, though the film does end on a high note.
