LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) Curious....did you watch this dubbed or with subtitles? Apparently in the US release, Magnolia flubbed the subtitles, which changed the dialogue (though they claim that it doesn't). I actually watched it dubbed (which we hardly ever do, but my husband wasn't in the mood for subtitles), so got all of the original dialogue apparently, but the dubbing wasn't all that great...of course. So I wanted to purchase it and watch it with subtitles....now I don't know what to make of this.... www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2009/4/2/distributor-gets-it-wrong-with-let-the-right-one-in-subtitle.htmliconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.htmlOutpost (2008) A group of mercenaries are hired to accompany and protect a scientist to an abandoned WWII bunker where Nazis were conducting a series of gruesome experiments. We watched it on Instant Play on Netflix so I missed some of the dialogue. I thought this was going to be, at most, a decent time waster.....but it actually is much better than I expected it to be. A low budget film that works really well, its atmospheric and more than a little creepy. The ending is weak though. 7/10 Cold Prey (2006) Norwegian slasher film about a group of friends that go on a snowboarding vacation. One is injured and they are forced to take shelter in a hotel that was closed in the seventies after the disappearance of the owners' son. Unknown to them, someone is still living in the hotel, and that someone is not letting them out alive. There is a definite feel of "been there, seen that", so its nothing new, it borrows a lot from other films. But its done well and the characters are actually likeable. Worth a watch for slasher fans. 6.5/10 Halloween Night (2006) Boy sees his mother raped and murdered, then is horribly burned....years later, he is in locked up in a mental institution and a couple of (stupid) orderlies taunt him, he kills them, escapes and heads back home on Halloween, where a group of (stupid) friends are having a Halloween party. Not surprisingly (horror fans probably know about the film studio The Asylum, well this is one of theirs) its bad. Really bad. I give it an extra point for the outtakes....a few of them are actually pretty damn funny. 2/10 Punisher: War Zone (2008) Frank Castle, the Punisher, faces his most dangerous foe yet, Jigsaw while dealing with the guilt of the accidental killing of an undercover FBI agent, who he thought was one of the bad guys. Its completely ridiculous, and completely over the top (the violence in particular is just NUTS) but its actually fun if you aren't taking it too seriously, and you aren't expecting it to be GOOD.... ;D 6/10

Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it's the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details. The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it's a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles. It's not a defective or faulty subtitle file. Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen. Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release. Frankly it's not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue. This wouldn't have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong. They are not. We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective. Title came out two weeks ago and general public don't notice and don't care - bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on.

I actually watched the subtitled version, I never watch dubbed if I can help it, and after reading one of your links and seeing the screen-by-screen comparison of the two versions I am bummed. They're little differences but the original version clearly has more of a sense of humor and is just written better. Now I feel like I'll have to watch it again if they ever release the original translation because I don't feel like I've seen the real film. THREE STOOGES FILM FESTIVAL Saw this at a local revival theater that shows older movies and they do a Stooges film festival every year where they show 6 - 8 of their film shorts. That stuff is still hilarious! Nyuck nyuck nyuck! ;D POLLOCK (2000) Ed Harris stars as, and directs, this biopic about Jackson Pollock, the American painter. Pollock was an artistic genius who revolutionized the modern artworld, but he was also an alcoholic and could've been the poster-boy for "tortured artists". Harris does an amazing job of acting and directing and even of imitating the real Pollock's art style, as we actually see Harris start, or work on, many paintings throughout the course of the film. Marcia Gay Harden also does great works as Lee Krasner, fellow artist and Pollock's wife. 8/10

I know, I loved the film except for the admittedly bad dubbing, and its why I hardly ever watch films dubbed myself. As for the general public not noticing.....the people that saw the original version DID notice, those that didn't have the chance to see the film before wouldn't have. I wouldn't have, since I didn't see the original subtitles until after the fact, so kind of glad I watched it dubbed. The original theatrical subtitles are clearly superior and make it a better film. Also, no matter what they say, some of the changes don't even really make sense...lol.

BE KIND REWIND (2008)
VHS-only video store owner, Elroy Fletcher (Danny Glover), asks Jack (Mos Def) to watch the store for him while he's away. Due to becoming magnetized in a freak accident, Jack's friend, Jerry (Jack Black), accidentally erases all the videotapes. To not lose the store's few clients, Jack and Jerry proceed to remake all the movies. Using low-budget techniques and starring themselves and some locals, they remake such flicks as GHOSTBUSTERS, DRIVING MISS DAISY, ROBOCOP, RUSH HOUR 2, THE LION KING, and many, many others. Surprisingly, their homemade versions of well-known movies become a huge hit in the neighborhood. It's an original idea, and their movies are really funny, but I wasn't as entertained by the rest of the film as I was by the recreated movies.

DEATH NOTE: THE LAST NAME (2006)
Sequel to DEATH NOTE that picks up right where the last one left off. Light, who still has the Death Note notebook in his possession, has now joined the group investigating Kira, in order to avoid suspicion and to finally try to rid himself of master detective, "L". Complicating matters are a couple of other notebooks and a second God of Death. More of a continuation than a sequel, kind of like the KILL BILL movies, where the two films are two halves of the same film. Anyway, enjoyed it just as much as the first one, if not slightly more.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Composer Peter Bretter is devastated when his girlfriend of five years, popular television actress Sarah Marshall, breaks off their relationship. He decides to head to Hawaii to recover, but to his horror, Sarah is staying at the same hotel he is. With her new boyfriend. Its crude, but its also sweet, there is a nice balance. I didn't like it quite as much as Knocked Up, but like with that film, I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
7.5/10
Premonition (2007)
A housewife with two young daughters is visited by the local sheriff informing her that, the day before, her husband who is out of town on business, was killed in a car accident. The next day, she awakes to find her husband is still alive. She quickly realizes her days are happening out of order, and she must figure out how to put the pieces of this puzzle together in order to save her husband and her family. Despite a strong performance from Sandra Bullock, the movie is a bit of a mess, too muddled, with too many plot holes. And the ending......not crazy about it.
4/10
Autopsy (2008)
One of the 8 Films to Die For, its about a young woman and her friends who are involved in a car accident, they are taken to a nearby hospital that is not exactly what it seems. Its not particularly original and its silly (more than once crossing from "silly" into "stupid") but gory, fun and it definitely has a sense of humor. Not much in the way of actual story or character development, but that's not a shock. Entertaining for what it is, which means, if you really, really love horror, give it go, you may enjoy it. If not, pass.
6/10
Baby Blues (2008)
On a secluded farm, a woman suffering from postpartum depression has a psychotic break and begins to stalk and murder her four children. Not for sensitive viewers, the violence against the children is gut wrenching. The film has a very uneven feel, switching from horrific family tragedy early on to over the top slasher film. The acting is actually pretty good at times (the woman is terrifying) and its an often scary and uncomfortable watch, but not one I am sure that I'm all that glad I watched. Some of it is well done for a low budget effort, so well done in fact, that the ridiculous ending is just disrespectful to the material. Not even bothering to rate it, because I have no idea WHAT to rate it.

BABY MAMA (2008)
Tina Fey stars as Kate, a single businesswoman who, at 37, decides to have a baby. Problem is, she eventually comes to the realization that she needs a surrogate mother to help her if her dreams of motherhood are to ever come true. A surrogate agency hooks her up with Angie, (Amy Poehler), an uncouth working-class girl. After breaking up with her idiot boyfriend/common law husband, Angie ends up at Kate's door and a sort-of female version of THE ODD COUPLE follows. Couple of funny lines here and there, and the two female leads have nice chemistry, considering they spent years together on SNL that's to be expected, but overall this is pretty predictable stuff. Not terrible, just not something you should go out of your way to see.
