CHARLY (1968)
Charly (Cliff Robertson) is a retarded adult who agrees to undergo an experimental surgery which may raise his intelligence. The experiment is a success and Charly's intelligence is soon at genius level. Unfortunately, he does not mature much on an emotional level and he learns that life can be tough, even for intelligent people. Robertson won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor. The film is sad at times and uplifting at others. There's also one sequence including motorcycles which is terribly dated, or maybe it was done that way intentionally to poke fun at certain types of films of the late sixties. Either way, it was pretty jarring within the context of the rest of the movie.

Saw IV-Ugh, this is just pitiful. It's like they're purposely trying to make these films as packed with shit as they can, merely because they know people are going to watch them anyway since they're going to theaters. Absolutely no sense of logic is displayed (wounds disappear from one side of the face to the other with reckless abandon, which is important as that's one area I pay attention to when reviewing) doors are unlocked that never should've needed that action required, there's a huge goof right in the first minutes of the film that practically renders the actions of the third one moot, and perhaps the biggest one of all: a trap being easily seen as escapable that wouldn't do any harm at all if nothing was done and shows there's no need to perform the task that sets the whole thing into motion. Coupled with an utterly uninteresting plotline, no action and some of the driest kills in the series, there's nothing at all here to see. 1/10

CADILLAC RECORDS (2008) Tells the story of Chess Records, started by Leonard Chess (Adrian Brody), and its roster of blues and rock and roll artists, which included Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker), Etta James (Beyoncé Knowles), Chuck Berry (Mos Def) and Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer). Yeah, the story includes all the usual, and unavoidable, music biz clichés, but the cast is strong across the board and there are some great musical performances. Better than I thought it would be. 7/10 VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (2008) Two girlfriends, the free-spirited Cristina (Scarlett Johanssen), and the level-headed and engaged to be married Vicky (Rebecca Hall), are on vacation in Barcelona when they meet seductive Spanish painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). Both women fall for him, but as if that's not complicated enough, they all have to contend with Juan's ex-wife, Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), a passionate, but unstable artist. All 3 women are lovely eye candy and the locations are fantastic to the point of me wanting to take a trip to Spain now. Cruz is great and totally deserving of her Oscar for this role. And her character's name is Maria Elena, which holds a special place in my heart as my own daughter's name is Elena Marie. The arguments between Maria and Juan are even funnier if, like me, you can speak Spanish. The subtitles don't do them justice. I am blown away by the fact that Woody Allen, this late in the game, can make a film this great. Not his funniest, just a great film all around. In fact one of the best of his career. 9/10

Tooth and Nail (2007) In a post-apocalyptic world, a small group of survivors hiding in an abandoned hospital are attacked by the Rovers, another group of survivors who have turned cannibal. Rips off from a lot of other films and its really very predictable, when its not completely stupid. The cast is actually pretty decent, but they can't save it. Gets a couple of extra points for the cast, a few of the stalking scenes, and the fact that it had the potential to be pretty good if the script hadn't been so awful so much of the time. 4/10 Peeping Tom (1960) A young photographer and filmmaker stabs women with his tripod, and films their deaths. A study of a serial killer, and of voyeurism, its a disturbing film (even has a touch of humor here and there) mainly because of the fact that you see everything from the killers point of view. You can sympathize with him because of how he has been warped, while being repulsed by his actions and wanting him stopped. Its an interesting film. 8.5/10 Twilight (2008) When her mother remarries, Bella Swan moves from Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in rainy, gloomy Forks, Washington. There she meets Edward Cullen, they fall in love, he's a vampire..... A teen romance with vampires. Its like....Dawson's Creek....with vampires. I've read the first three books, I like them fine (though I honestly have no idea what all the fuss is about, its not the most original story in the world, and they aren't extraordinarily well written). The movie was about what I expected. It really is all kind of sweet, even if it could have been better written (its not even as good as the books in that way).....and the two leads are actually pretty decent, they are good together. Its obviously not about anything other than sex and how scary it can be.....he wants to bite her so much he can barely stand to be around her, yet he wants to bite her so much he can barely stand to be away from her.... She loves him so much, she panics just at the thought of being away from him. Its the love story, which is what its all about anyway, that is the draw.....because the fight scenes are actually BAD. Really bad. I enjoyed it, but in a guilty pleasure kind of way (the same way I enjoyed the books, but the books really ARE better). 5/10

Hannibal Rising (2007)
First of all, I tried reading the book, I was so bored, I actually put it down and never finished it. It was so disappointing, I could hardly believe this was the same writer of Red Dragon (one of my favorite books of all time) and The Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal was also a major disappointment, but hey, at least it wasn't boring, I actually finished that one. But I decided I would still give the movie a try. This of course is a prequel, the story of how Hannibal Lecter turns into the human monster we know he becomes. But mostly, its a lackluster revenge tale. Lecter survives the horror his family suffers during WWII. His sister's fate, particularly gruesome, haunts and warps Lecter. The film has bright moments throughout. It has a good look, and the casting isn't bad. Surprisingly, I kind of liked Gaspard Ulliel in the role of Lecter, as long as you don't constantly compare him to Hopkins, he actually fits the role of the somewhat sympathetic, but mostly just scary young man transforming into a human monster Sometimes he's downright chilling. But its an uneven performance. The films biggest problems.....its too often dull and the character development is not handled very well. Too bad really.

BURN AFTER READING (2008) One of those rare instances where I was totally blown away by a movie the first time I saw it and then not so much the second time. I cracked up all through this flick the first time I watched it, but upon seeing it again last night, I didn't find it quite as funny. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a really good Coen brothers film, with some great performances, Brad Pitt and George Clooney run away with this one, it's just not quite as "genius" as I first believed. 8.5/10 as opposed to the 10/10 I gave it the first time. Oh well, it happens.

DEATH NOTE (2006)
Based on a Japanese Manga which was later adapted into an Anime and now we get the live-action version. When college student, Light Yagami, finds the "Death Note", a notebook which can kill someone just by writing their name in it, he decides to use it to start getting rid of the world's criminals. Soon the FBI, and "L", a great detective, are on the case to solve the mysterious deaths. Pretty good "cat and mouse" flick with several twists along the way and the god of death is pretty creepy. Original concept. I rented this one based on Raina's review/recommendation and while I didn't love it as much as her, I did enjoy it and look forward to seeing Part 2. I might even rent the Anime.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) A twelve-year-old who is being bullied by classmates, meets a mysterious girl who turns out to be the ultimate goth chick, a vampire. Decent acting, interesting story, and not just another vampire movie. Didn't totally grab me, but definitely worth a look.

I LOVE YOU, MAN (2009)
When Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) proposes to his girlfriend he realizes he has no close male friends, and therefore, no one he can ask to be his Best Man. He decides to try to meet some candidates by going on a series of man-dates (Lunch or after work beer, never dinner and a movie!). After some hilarious encounters, he eventually meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), a cool, laid-back dude who always speaks his mind and shares Peter's love of Canadian power rock trio, Rush. Some really funny moments, as Peter keeps displaying just how awkward he is around other guys. Rudd and Segel are great together. Features a great supporting cast that includes SNL's Andy Samberg as Peter's gay brother, and professional scene-stealer J.K. Simmons (See JUNO, BURN AFTER READING, the SPIDER-MAN trilogy) as Peter's dad.
