I'm going to a pre-screeing this Monday at six. I'm doing a review for the paper.

Cool, let us know what you think! The reviews I've read of it so far haven't been too good.

I think that it's not going to be too good with all the damn CGI they used in it. I hate when films go overboard with CGI.

I'm not looking forward to this at all, I can see it making a whole generation of viewers thinking this is the Van Helsing, when we all know the only true Van Helsing is Peter Cushing. Or maybe I'm just odd.
I also don't like them playing the Frankenstein's Monster as a villain, which is as far from what he is as can be.
Of course, Hammer could have done a good job on it, though Lee would have to play a number of characters/creatures, as would Cushing.

I believe THIS Van Helsing is loosely based on the anime Hellsing. I don't know, but the character designs look similar. I've never watched the anime, but it looks like they took the action hero approach to it... kinda like the upcoming movie.

I have a feeling this could be a fun one. Just a fun, mindless action movie. Of course, it might suck, but I kind of am interested in it.

I'm going to see it tomorrow night, but I don't have to pay so if it does suck at least I didn't waste any money on it! ;D

I don't like them playing the Frankenstein's Monster as a villain, which is as far from what he is as can be. But they don't do this at all, Father! The Monster's on the bright side of the force there! I saw the movie today (even paid for it!) and though I am kind of disappointed, I can't say I disliked it. What went wrong? Well, you guessed it: the goddamn CGI. It's not that The Wolf sucks or anything else sucks (The Wolf's pretty cool in my opinion), but it's that there's just too much of this stuff. And one more thing: Stephen Sommers should learn to use his sets better; the editing is too furious so you can't relish the landscapes as much as you'd like to (same thing bothered me while watching The Mummy).

Well, my plans got canceled so still haven't seen it. Maybe at this rate I'll see it when it comes out on dvd...

I couldn't wait for DVD - that was one of this year's most anticipated movies in my case. Needless to say - that's another reason why I feel disappointed with it. But again: it's still good, there are many thrilling scenes in it and it's tough not to feel thrilled when you hear the energetic soundtrack in the background of the Paris scene and Van Helsing appears for the first time. I just wish Sommers focused on real photography next time round and only used CGI when it's really needed.

Don't see it.
It's this year's biggest disappointment. I followed standard procedure and left my brain at the concession stand. Must have left some part of my brain in there, because I was still being bothered. Jeez, there were more falls in that sucker than a Looney Tunes cartoon. I waited once for the wolfman to flash a sign saying "Uh oh."
You can only swing on a rope so many times, and when ropes appear at random, that's when it has to stop. Last I checked, this was Van Helsing, not Pitfall.
I must confess the film wasn't ALL bad. The score was excellent. The actors pulled off a decent job with the shi- er... script they were dealt with. Okay, the script wasn't bad either... except for the ending, which is the WORST ending I have ever seen, next to From Justin to Kelly.
The main problem was the director. I loved the Mummy movies. If Sommers put the same effort into Van Helsing, we would have had this summer's Pirates of the Caribbean. But instead, we have a movie that falls apart, glitches like you wouldn't believe, and has more "WTF"s than an episode of Pokémon. Thank you, Sommers. You just made Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, David Wenham, and yourself look bad.
This thing's packing in crowds like you wouldn't believe, though. So apparently, he's most likely going to get a second chance.
My advice to you, Sommers, rent a couple of seasons of "Hellsing". It will do you a lot of good.
This was my mini-review. The full one will be up on my website soon.

Heh heh heh - a very good mini-review, Smitty. I enjoyed the movie more than you, it seems, but all things that bothered you bothered me as well: too many ropes, too many WTF's and a crap-crap-crap ending.
But as I wrote before (and as Smitty wrote, too) there ARE good things in this Van Helsing. It's just that they have to compete with lots of bad stuff.

Wow, maybe I should be glad that I won't have to pay for this movie when I do see it... The thing that has been un-thrilling to me just from seeing the previews is, like everyone else has said, the poor CGI. Oh and also Kate Beckinsale's accent, sheesh...

Yes, yes: the accent. It almost makes Kate unattractive. Which is damn weird, isn't it?
