Are you guys waiting for Sommers' Van Helsing as nervously as I am?
In the meantime let's talk a bit about the films he directed pre-Helsing: The Mummy Returns was a disappointment for almost everybody (though I still can frankly say that I like it), but the first Mummy and Deep Rising make Sommers a director to have faith in, if you ask me. Especially Deep Rising: fast moving, funny, well acted (who could think Treat Williams can wear the boots of an action hero with such wonderful ease?), with good soundtrack and special effects, it really came as a surprise just when I started losing my faith in seeing a good creature feature anytime soon! Also, you just have to admire how mercilessly bloody this movie is!

I voted for The Mummy because...I never saw any other one besides The Mummy Returns.

Well I have only seen "The Mummy" (which bored the hell out of me) and "Deep Rising". So i went for "Deep Rising" as it's one hell of an enjoyable movie. Easily the most fun monster flick since "Tremors". Love the one bullet left/Wes Studi scene! What a wicked thing it is.

The difference between The Mummy and Deep Rising is that the latter is, in fact, much more a horror flick. The Mummy didn't give us enough real suspense or blood to call it that. As I wrote before - I enjoyed both of the films but Deep Rising should be far more satisfying for a horror movie fan. See it, Frankenjohn, if it's available to rent somewhere near you!

Also, I wanted to add that Van Helsing changes nothing in my point of view on Sommers: the guy's good but he has to learn how to use CGI efficiently.
Deep Rising is still my favourite movie he made (and his only real horror flick, in fact, as I think Van Helsing is just an action film with horror background - just like The Mummy).

I voted for The Mummy, I haven't seen the others except for Deep Rising & it's been so long since I watched it I don't remember much about it.

I voted Mummy Returns. Sorry, but it is the only one I have seen on the list. I heard it sucked compared to the 1st one, but having not seen the first one, I quite enjoyed it.

I've seen both "Mummy's", and "The Jungle Book" (which I quite like actually), and I think Sommers is a very good B-list director. He'll never be in a league with Spielberg, Cameron, Scorcese, or even Tarantino, but he's got a very good feel for period pieces (as evidenced by the three above films). "The Mummy" for me was one of the most pure fun movies I've ever seen, so I'll go with that. It wasn't scary, but I don't think it was supposed to be. "Mummy Returns" wasn't too bad, but it wasn't great either.

Except for the odd occasion at an all day/night film festival..."The Mummy" has the dodgy hnour of being the only film that I have fallen asleep in at a cinema...Utterly dull, plodding and lifeless.

Well, to me it happened a bit earlier (falling asleep at a cinema, that is): the movie that couldn't keep my interest was Stargate. And if you asked me about the difference between this and The Mummy, I'd have to say it's huge. As Leo said: Sommers is not a 'great' director but he certainly has some talent at making good 'pure entertainment' films - much more of it than the Stargate guys (i.e. the Emmerich/Devlin team).

"Stargate" was another tedious stinker..But i never saw it at the pictures, so I can't say if it would have put me to sleep.

Ah how appropriate that my first post how this board is to do with Stephen Sommers . This guys movies suck and he`s certainly one of the worst directors working in Hollywood today
I voted DEEP RISING as his best film but to be honest most of his work is awful , it`s far too CGI dominated and in many parts his moviues resemble a cartoon

Well, at least you voted for the right movie, Theo! But seriously: it's easy to see why people hate Sommers. He's a show-off and he can't help it. I also have problems with his CGI overuse, and the future will tell us if he's going to get better or worse. And - by the way - welcome to the place, Theo! Finally!

I voted for THE MUMMY by default. It was an okay action movie with some decent effects, but it was definitely an Indiana Jones wannabe. THE MUMMY RETURNS was shit, especially that horrible CGI Scorpion King near the end of the movie. I saw them, but I don't really remember DEEP RISING or JUNGLE BOOK. VAN HELSING was crap, BTW, but slightly better than MUMMY RETURNS. Not a fan of this director.
