I guess I should make clear that by "grew up" with NotLD, I mean that my Mommy raised me on the stuff. She was a huge Stephen King fan, and George Romero was only a step away from him, after all. I'm 26 and I saw NotLD when I was, maybe, early early teens. At first my brother and I scoffed at it, but we actually felt compelled to watch it some more, and now we love it.
For a while, my brother and I got a real kick out of watching old horror films from my Mom's era (the 50's) and making fun of her for being scared of crap like The Giant Claw. However, we did find some real quality specimens of classic horror. "Them!" is another fine movie (look close, there's Leonard Nimoy for 7 seconds!!) and so was "Tarantula" (first film for Clint Eastwood--right at the end!!).
So yeah, I grew up with NotLD, but not in 1968, more like 1990. I had seen more sophisticated stuff by then, but still found the original '68 film compelling.
