I agree with your choices, neptunes. Blair Witch Project didn't do much to me but the scene you mentioned - oh yes, a good one.
As I'm a die-hard Shyamalan fan, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable sound perfect to me as the examples of spooky cinema done right.

No.2; The Blair Witch Project. This film to me, was good but still dissapointed me. However in the final scene, when she hears a bang, runs down the stairs and sees her friend facing the corner of the wall, that just freaked me out. That scen stayed with me well after I left the cinema and was very very scary. NOTE: Clowns, preachers, kids with white hair (albinos), and skipping rope songs still scare the shit out of me!!! So I wont be going to the huge party with skipping ropes hosted by preachers featuring clowns for albino kids. Aint gonna happen. That scene from Blair Witch still creeps me out too & I've watched the movie a few times. Does your aversion to clowns have anything to do w/ watching "It"? That's what did it for me. That & seeing the pic of John Wayne Gacy dressed as a clown, I think that was actually scarier.

Yes!!! Pennywise was the worst cos I watched that when I was like 6-7.... And I never got over it. I remember when I used to stay in Monte Carlo goin to a french circus, a clown came up and tried to soak me with water, then when I went mad I guess he assumed I was just a temper tantrum kid and tried to cheer me up, all the while I was terrified thinkin... this fuckers gonna drag me down a sewer!
I seen the pic of Gacy and to behonest, it isnt much better. In fact its worse as you say because its true.
There was these 'supposed' child killers in scotland called the clowns, and they basically kidnapped kids and molested them etc, so that didnt help either. I always remember getting told that their van had a huge sign on the side saying... take a friend fishing.
Maybe bullshit maybe not either way, it scared me lol.

Yeah, Tim Curry is great, but he just creeped me out as Pennywise. Whenever I hear his voice it reminds me of that movie. The first time I saw the pic of Gacy I had nightmares for about a week, b/c like you said, it's true, it's real life. I can sit & watch all the blood & gore in horror movies all day long, but I tried to watch one of those Faces of Death movies a few years ago when they were 'popular' & I just couldn't stomach it. It was horrible.

for a great horror movie, watch the nasty cheap flick by the now hugely famous Peter Jackson called "Bad Taste". Insanely funny, if only for the fact that he's in it twice and has, at one point, to fight himself.
Quality.

Great movie. Very funny, very stupid but scary?
The scene with Derek (Jackson) fighting the zombies with... oh fuck it, any scene with Derek is hilarious.

I only just found this thread and being a horror fan find only five movies to be nerve-racking. However, I shall try....
1. Evil Dead (this one is a definite) 2. Night of the Living Dead (see avatar) 3. The Thing (John Carpenter's) 4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 5. Alien
(The last two were panic choices, as I couldn't narrow it down enough in my clusterfuck of a brain. Oh worry worry.)

Yeah, top 5 is difficult, and they change somewhat, but for the moment I'll pick,in no specific order
The Thing [remake] Suspiria The Shining Dawn Of The Dead [original of course though the remake weren't bad] Invasion Of The Body Snatchers [B/W original, yeah I know it's sci fi as well but i think it's bloody scary].
Top 10 or 15 [or 20,etc,etc.] would have been easier!

Top Five was just a suggestion...feel free to name as many as you want. Good way to strike up some more discussions.

spacer, Phoenix, Quorthon, DrLenera: all great choices! I can't agree with one of them only: the original Night Of The Living Dead never worked for me, and I actually perceive Savini's remake a superior movie. Also, I still didn't see Saw, so no opinion on this.

I can't agree with one of them only: the original Night Of The Living Dead never worked for me, and I actually perceive Savini's remake a superior movie. . For me, the black and white aspect brings a level of darkness, dread, mystery, and horror that Savini's good, but over-lit, remake couldn't muster. I think Savini was worried that the excellent make-up fx wouldn't show up well enough, so unfortunately, the movie was exceptionally bright for a film taking place at night. I think the acting had more tension to the original as well. It's also one of those films I kind of grew up with.

It's also one of those films I kind of grew up with. That may be the thing! I saw it too late, I guess - after Dawn Of The Dead and all the other acclaimed horror movies; so for me it was no epiphany, so to speak, and I found the acting/script/make-up far inferior in comparison with Dawn.

It's also one of those films I kind of grew up with. Just one of those cases, I think, where you have to see the movie at the right time. Also having grown up on it, it's always the first zombie movie I think of, before all others. This movie oozes "atmosphere" and the B & W photography gives it an almost "documentary" feel. I think for someone who is seeing it for the first time now, unless they're really young, it would probably be pretty unimpressive compared to something like the new DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, for instance.
