If you got any ideas for a perfect DVD title (meaning not just a cult movie but also crazy extras) do put it here!
The first one will be...
[glow=red,2,300]This Is Spinal Tap[/glow]
A beautiful laugh-your-guts-out movie plus a bunch of almost as funny (and almost as LONG as the whole movie!) unused material AND a hilarious commentary by all three main actors... or should I say 'characters': they never get out of their roles while commenting upon the onscreen events (saying they were manipulated by the director, pointing at who of the other characters is still alive, who was an especially 'pregnant doggy' to work with and so on).

Another one could be a more recent Christopher Guest effort: [glow=red,2,300]Best In Show[/glow] It's one of my favourite movies of his and it has almost the same quality of bonus features as This Is Spinal Tap (a funny commentary, many deleted scenes). In fact, this edition doesn't look half as good as it is: no SPECIAL ONE! or COLLECTOR'S ONE! written anywhere on the box. Quite a surprise!

I could use Best In Show and all of Gues's other works.

Ha - I'm also his fan but have you seen Waiting For Guffman? About some kind of an amateurish play the authors and actors of which hope to get to Hollywood and become filthy famous? This is the only Guest mockumentary I didn't like too much.

Speaking of Guest and the gang, I finally saw "A MIGHTY WIND" and, sad to say, was a little disappointed. It was cute and made me smile a couple of times, but I didn't find it nearly as funny as past efforts by this talented bunch. Needless to say, "SPINAL TAP" is a perfect comedy. "BEST IN SHOW" is pretty damn funny too. I still haven't seen "GUFFMAN". How does it compare to "A MIGHTY WIND"?

Oh yeah - A Mighty Wind. I haven't yet seen it. It just came out in Poland this weekend (straight to DVD) and I couldn't manage to rent it so far. The package looks wonderful again, though - lots of deleted scenes and the commentary by the guys - and I'd be glad to grab it finally in a few days' time. Will tell you then how it compares to Guffman in my opinion.

Waiting For Guffman is his funniest film in my opinion. The "Backdraft" scence and and the interviews with Libby Mae Brown and the "dinner" scene were the best.
I haven't seen A Mighty Wind yet, but I'd like to.

I don't understand how people can say Guffman is Guest's funniest movie - it's got the worst setting and core idea (I mean: a play!), the characters are Guest's least sharp yet and the ending is damn predictable and NOT very funny.
I'm not criticising your comedy taste, Frankenjohn - it's more like I'm expressing my deep surprise and maybe questioning MY OWN taste and ability to spot a brilliant comedy, as you're not the only person who says that Guffman rules the mockumentary roost. I just don't get it, though. Can someone please explain WHY the hell is is so 'best of all'?

I'm with you on This is Spinal Tap - one of my favourite DVDs. I have a DVD player hooked up to a really little TV next to my bed, and i watch movies before i go to bed (its soooooo excellent!) and Spinal Tap has a permanant place on my bedside rack - i only keep movies (and comedy TV series) there that are guaranteed to make me feel good time and time again.
I reckon the other perfect DVDs in my collection are:
Unforgiven - one of the best DVD treatments a movie's ever gotten. Looks great, wonderful packaging - i like just opening it up and looking at it! Great movie, great music (i also put it on and just listen to the music playing on the menus), and three or four really fantastic Eastwood docos (Eastwood docos are almost as fun as Bogey docos...)
Casablanca - one of the nicest looking special editions to come out in a while - beautiful artwork, really great bogey docos, Carrotblanca is fantastic fun and i'm so glad they put it on there, and a beautiful transfer of the movie itself make this a perfect DVD.
Once Upon a Time in America - this is more for look than content. One of the most beautiful looking DVDs i have. Also great to just open up. The one doco excerpt it has is really great - actual clip of Sergio Leone, i think, included. Great to hear James Woods et al chatting about the movie. Great presentation of the movie - which i love mainly for the music. This one's a guilty pleasure of mine.
Once Upon a Time in the West - now HERE's a great special edition. Menus are really fantastic, some superb docos, and don't even get me started on the movie itself - no don't... i refuse to rave about it!
MASH - special edition. One of my favourite Robert Altman movies, great features, great menus, great transfer, great disc all round.
I'm located in Oz (Australia), by the way, so the DVDs are Aussie DVDs - i'm pretty sure most of these are similar to the US ones though.

I don't think I'll become a fan of Casablanca in near future, but the rest of your choices I'd really like to check out, clifford; especially MASH (don't remember much from it) and Unforgiven (saw it only once and liked it a lot; Hackman is an unbeatable scum, but Eastwood is really good there as well).

I can't believe there isn't a great DVD for Blade Runner. The brit transfer sucks the big one As for great dvd packages. If you like his work [glow=red,2,300]Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back[/glow] Got so many deleted scenes, I don't knwo what to do with it, some great Will Ferrel improv. etc. The Dead Trilogy box set is good. Yes, I'm glad you mentioned Jay And Silent Bob here, mightyalgo! It may not be my favourite Kevin Smith movie, but the deleted scenes that last about - I don't know - 40+ minutes (my favourite is Jay talking about his sex requests when meeting the Hollywood whores; and let's not forget Scooby's boner ;D) and the short but VERY funny gag reel (Will Ferrel is much funnier there than in the movie!) are Smith fan's dreams come true!

I agree, that DVD is awesome. But I'm a Smith addict so.... I've watched the gag reel several times & it cracks me up as much as the first time I watched it! ;D And Ferrel's improv stuff I think is a lot funnier than he was in the movie.

Kevin Smith DVDs in general are great as far as extras go. What about the "Fat Albert" deleted scene from DOGMA? Very funny.

I would have to say the Perfect DVD that I own is James Cameron's The Abyss. This was a very early 2-disc special edition that recently got re-released with different artwork but it has some of the most thorough extras that I've ever seen which includes the complete screenplay, and an excellent documentary, and much more stuff. It also looks and sounds great!! If you're a fan of this movie this DVD is a must have... Sure some of the extra aren't that exciting but for sheer data overload this is incredible.
