How did that essay go, what'd he say? If memory serves right (considering I don't have that book at hand right now) he basically discussed that he considered licensed merchandise to be a striping of a comic strip's soul, and that he respected his characters too much for that. You really should check out that book, as he shares a lot of interesting information about the strips, how he created each character, what he was trying to do with certain stories, etc. Calvin and Hobbes are two of the greatest characters ever to grace the pages of a Newspaper. It's good to know he loved what he did enough to protect it.

I'm here to defend Garfield: The Comic Strip. Hey, I always thought it was very funny - it should not be compared to that strange movie they based on it! I agree, that movie was a total disgrace to the classic comic strip. So even at its' best, it was a much more simple strip than the other ones we mentioned. At least it had some charm to it (which frankly is a lot more than can be said for a good deal or current comic strips). Far Side is great, too, but for example Mafalda never worked for me. I take it you didn't read Mafalda in Spanish, did you? I've never seen it translated, but it looks like it'd lose a lot of humor that way. Plus, it requires readers to be quite familiar with Latinoamerican history (especially Argentina), so I can see why it wouldn't appeal to non latin-american readers. And The far side? Rules.

Yes, I, too am glad it's animated. There goes our chances of having John Goodman as Homer and Louie Anderson as Barney. Hmmm.... maybe we dodged a bullet here...

Fenril - you are very right, I have never read Mafalda in Spanish. Some years ago I bought a whole book with Mafalda translated into Polish and was disappointed with it. Soon after this, Peanuts was issued in a similar form - and this disappointed me even more.

This is a fall-down hilarious trailer. It does the right thing: get me amped up for the movie and makes me want to see it. A job well-done.
And I can watch that "between a rock and a hard place" gag all day.

The look on Homer's face when he sent the wrecking ball face = priceless.
Great trailer. Opening night for The Simpsons Movie. After all, it is from the best animated television program ever.
