** Mediocre
I was really looking forward to this based on the great buzz, some of the opinions on this board and that both my brother & sister loved it and have been telling me, "You gotta see it!", since they did. I just wasn't that impressed. It had a few laughs, which is why I didn't rate it lower, but I was expecting to really crack up, not just chuckle every once in a while.
Smitty said in his original review: "PLOT Doesn't have a plot, doesn't need one." Er, wrong. Sorry, but every movie needs some kind of plot. This was a collection of scenes, not a story. And most of them just kind of laid there. If I want sketches that go on too long I'll watch "Saturday Nite Live". The characters are mostly a bunch of lethargic unlikeable losers. Seriously, almost everybody in this movie acted like they were half asleep. No energy whatsoever and as a result they kinda bored me. I didn't care about any of them, not even the "hero" Napoleon. He's just an annoying idiot who deserved to get his ass kicked by the school bullies. I usually root for underdogs, but this movie didn't really give me any reason to do that. Like Pulp said, "To me, it was like we were automatically supposed to like Napolean because his name was in the title, but he didn't do anything that made me want to like him." We bought this DVD, along with a couple of others, from Blockbuster's "Used" bin and gave it to my 13 year old stepson after we finished watching it. He loves this movie!

I gotta feel bad for Napoleon Dynamite, the same way I feel bad for Titanic and Lost in Translation. Hype, hype, and more hype, and people are inevitably disappointed by it.
I'm sorry for contributing to the hype, but in all fairness, it would have been hyped regardless of whether or not I said anything.
That being said, I liked this movie. To me, it was funny BECAUSE it was weird and pointless. The one-liners just about knocked me out. Granted, a movie should be more than just one-liners, but I'm not complaining.
Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go feed my llama.

Quirky film that I didn't think I'd like, but ended up enjoying. However that said, the humour while sometimes really funny in the deadpan way its delivered wouldn't stand up over repeated viewings. (To me at least)
So all in all, a good film if seen for what it is but nothing spectacular.
