Sideways star Thomas Haden Church's villainous alter-ego in the new Spider-Man movie has been revealed, if internet gossip is to be believed. Good news as I always liked Thomas Haden Church a lot - he was great in the Wings series, wasn't he? But after being as disappointed as I was with Spider-Man 2 I'm no longer holding breath waiting for the third film.

Well, you know me, Heineken - I'm not a typical fan of comic book adaptations; I wasn't impressed by X-Men 2 either, though everyone else seemed to be. Spider-Man I liked because it sported good f/x combined with a nice story and convincing acting, while in Part 2, which was lacking the "Damn I'm a spider!" epiphanies and focused too much on romance, it all went in the more usual regions for comic book adaptations. Not for me, this. The original surprised me with its freshness while the sequel disappointed me with its artificiality.

Outside of possibly Batman, Spidey probably has the greatest collection of super villains in the world of comic books. Thanks for the news btw, I hadn't read that! I gotta agree Spidey has some of the best villians to choose from and Venom would be a cool CGI choice I suppose.

From IMDB: Sideways star Thomas Haden Church's villainous alter-ego in the new Spider-Man movie has been revealed, if internet gossip is to be believed. The Oscar nominee will play Venom in Spider-Man 3 in 2007, according to the Pressconnects.Com website. Venom won't be the only Spider-Man arch-enemy in the second sequel - Daniel Gillies' John Jameson character will become Manwolf in the film, according to the reports.I had a feeling it might be Venom. Of course, this could all be BS. John Jameson becoming Manwolf follows the comic book storyline so that's cool, but he was never a "major" villain. And what about the fact that Harry Osborn found daddy's Green Goblin costumes and arsenal in SPIDER-MAN 2?? Don't they have to follow that up?? Plus, Dr. Connors was mentioned by name in the first SPIDER-MAN and even put in an appearance in SPIDER-MAN 2. It's well know to comic fans that he will one day become Spidey nemesis, The Lizard. So many seeds being planted for future villains and possible storylines. And there are still many more villains that have the possibility of appearing in future Spidey movies, long after Tobey Maguire hangs up the tights, ie: The Vulture, Sandman, Mysterio, Black Cat, Hobgoblin, The Rhino, Electro and many more. Outside of possibly Batman, Spidey probably has the greatest collection of super villains in the world of comic books. I just don't want it to get like the BATMAN movies with two or three villains per film. By the time of the debacle, BATMAN AND ROBIN, we had villains, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy & Bane all facing off against the Dynamic Duo. Definitely overkill. Hate to burst yer bubble, folks. I believe that Sam Raimi himself has said 'No' to the Venom idea. A third installment would be too quick to bring in such a notorious nemesis such as Venom, anyway. Personally, I think it's gonna be the Lizard, since we've gotten to know Connors. However, a Green Goblin reprise was hinted at, so that might be the most likely. Also, Raimi hinted, almost in passing--and possibly joking--that he'd like to do a total of six movies. At any rate, 3 or 4 possible villians for the 3rd film have all been hinted at.

I hope Church isn't going to play Lizard though, since we were already introduced to a different actor playing Dr. Connnors in Part II. I hate when they recast actors over the course of sequels. Of course I'd go anyway, but still...

Church as Sandman would make sense. Raimi is a fan of the old school villains and Sandman was always one of spidey's biggest villains.
In X-MEN 3 news, from IMDB:
Dutch actress Famke Janssen has signed up to reprise her X-Men role in the movie franchise's third installment - despite her character's death in the previous film. Janssen's psychic character Jean Grey perished at the end of X2 to save her fellow mutants, but she will now evolve into new character Phoenix in X-Men 3. Other stars onboard for the third installment of the Marvel Comic adventure include Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Patrick Stewart. Shooting is slated to start this summer, for a May 26, 2006 US release.
Hope this is all true and not internet B.S. I've read that James Marsden (Cyclops) won't be back for X-MEN 3 due to his being cast in Bryan Singer's SUPERMAN RETURNS.
