I thought they were giving the Star Trek franchise a rest! Sheesh. I need a few more years.......but it will probably take that long for production to start.

But who'll play young Kirk and Spock?? Well, considering the script isn't even written yet, I'd say casting is still a ways off. I'm no Trekkie so I have no idea how long Kirk and Spock were supposed to have already known each other at the point the original series started, so I wonder how much younger they're supposed to be in this movie than they were in TOS.

You know Shatner would still want to do it. "Look at me! I've enough energy to still play a young guy! Watch how crazy I am when I make out with this gree slave chick!" "That's just a bellboy..." "Priceline dot com!!!" *sigh*

In a recent interview Abrams said "It won't be about Kirk and Spock". He also added that the script ideas are all top secret and revealed nothing more.

My wife had one of those celebrity magazines for some reason (I hate those), and I flipped through it--and there was a rumor spot that Ben Affleck might play Kirk--which would indicate that it could actually be a Kirck & company flick. Guess we won't really know until it nears completion.

Got a few thousand dollars just burning a hole in your pocket? Have you always wanted to own an original Captain's chair, a phaser, communicator or even a Starfleet uniform? Well, Fanboy, now's your chance. Paramount Studios is having a major Star Trek garage sale. World famous auction house, Christie's, is auctioning off tons of screen-used props, costumes, models and even set pieces from every Star Trek series and movie. Click here to check out 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection. Hurry, it starts Oct. 5th. I'm more of a Star Wars guy, but even I have to admit that they have some pretty cool stuff up for auction.

Script Completed for 'Star Trek XI'
Director J.J. Abrams has confirmed that the script for Star Trek XI has been completed, that it will concern Capt. Kirk and Spock as very young men, that shooting will begin this year, and that the movie is targeted for release in 2008. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams said that the story will satisfy even non-Trekkers. "On the one hand, for people who love Star Trek, the fix that they will get will be really satisfying, '' he told the magazine. ''For people who've never seen it or know it vaguely, I think they will enjoy it equally, because the movie does not require you to know anything about Star Trek. I would actually prefer [that] people don't know the series, because I feel like they will come to it with an open mind."
That's great that supposedly even non-Trekkers will be able to enjoy it, but seriously, how many non-Trekkers, or even mild fans, are even going to bother with a Star Trek movie? I'm of the mind that the majority of people who don't bother to watch it on tv for free, aren't going to pay to see it in a theater. Unless they cast actors in the lead roles that bring in their own non-Trek fans. The rumour is that Matt Damon is up for the role of Kirk, so I could see some Damon fans, who would never even consider going to a Star Trek movie, giving it a chance, but that's about it.

And so, Scotty beams up one last time.
Late Star Trek star James Doohan's remains were successfully blasted into space Saturday morning. The ashes of the actor, who played Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the TV show and its spin-off movies, were flown up in a space rocket from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Following the flight, the remains of the star, who inspired the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty", parachuted down to Earth. The actor's widow, Wende Doohan, was at the launch. She says, "For the amount of emotion that was involved, it was amazing how technical and smoothly everything ran." Doohan died aged 85 in 2005. His ashes were accompanied by the remains of former US astronaut Gordon Cooper and those of 200 other people. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's remains were fired into space in 1997, six years after his death.

Group renames asteroid for George Takei
By SAMANTHA GROSS, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - George Takei already had a place among the stars in the minds of millions of "Star Trek" fans. Now he's taking up permanent residence as the namesake of the asteroid formerly known as the 1994 GT9.
The asteroid, located between Mars and Jupiter, has been renamed 7307 Takei in honor of the actor, who is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series.
"I am now a heavenly body," Takei said Tuesday, laughing. "I found out about it yesterday. ... I was blown away. It came out of the clear, blue sky — just like an asteroid."
The celestial rock, discovered by two Japanese astronomers in 1994, joins the 4659 Roddenberry (named for the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry) and the 68410 Nichols (for co-star Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura). Other main-belt asteroids are already named for science fiction luminaries Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov.
"It's in general considered quite an honor," Lars Lindberg Christensen, spokesman for the International Astronomical Union, said of the latest renaming, which was approved by the union's Committee on Small Body Nomenclature.
About 14,000 asteroid names have been approved by the panel, while about 165,000 asteroids have been identified and numbered, he said.
Unlike the myriad Web sites that offer to sell naming rights to stars, the IAU committee-approved names are actually used by astronomers, said Tom Burbine, the Mount Holyoke College astronomy professor who proposed the name swap.
"This is the name that will be used for all eternity," he said.
Under the committee's policies, whoever discovers an asteroid has 10 years in which to propose a name. After that, the panel considers other suggestions, although it warns would-be namers to avoid anything "in questionable taste" and any names honoring political or military figures sooner than 100 years after their deaths.
Takei, 70, said he and his "Star Trek" co-stars had always stuck to discussing more earthly honors.
We were "privileged to work on a show that had this kind of a vision for our future, but we're actors," he said by telephone from his Los Angeles home. "Yes, we all lobbied ... for a star on Hollywood Boulevard, but never a star up in the heavens."
Burbine, who also has put a number of his astronomy colleagues up for consideration, said he suggested Takei's name in part out of appreciation for his work with the Japanese American Citizens League and with leading gay rights group Human Rights Campaign. Takei, a spokesman for HRC's Coming Out Project, was cultural affairs chairman of the JACL, and he was appointed to the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission by former President Clinton.
Most recently, Takei has appeared on NBC's "Heroes," playing Hiro Nakamura's father. He also appears regularly on Howard Stern's satellite radio show.

From EmpireOnline:
Simon Pegg Is Scotty! And John Cho is Star Trek's Sulu!
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Well, colour us surprised. JJ Abrams' Star Trek re-boot has found its Scotty and it's one Simon Pegg. We would have laid money on the role of chief engineer going to massive Star Trek geek and real live Scot James McAvoy. But we're not going to argue with the choice, since we're sure Pegg will do a terrific job.
Pegg's not the only new Enterprise crew member this morning. John Cho, the Harold half of Harold and Kumar, will play Sulu, the ship's Helmsman.
That makes the Enterprise bridge all but full. As well as Pegg and Cho, Zachary Quinto is Spock, Zoe Saldana is Uhura and Anton Yelchin is Chekhov. Chris Pine is said to be in discussions to play the key role of Captain Kirk. With Eric Bana also on board as the villain, that leaves only first Enterprise captain, Christopher Pike, and Kirk's parents to be filled. And also, as someone just reminded me, Bones.
The movie is set to shoot within the next few months.
Shaun of the Dead['s] Simon Pegg, huh? I like him, but he wouldn't have been my first choice. Wonder how they came about that choice?

Bana To Play 'Star Trek' Villain
Troy star Eric Bana will play the villain in the new Star Trek movie. The Aussie actor has signed on to play Nero in Lost creator J.J. Abrams' much-anticipated new film - a prequel to the Star Trek television series of the 1960s. Black Hawk Down actor Bana will join Heroes star Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin on the cast of the new sci-fi film, which will also feature original Star Trek regular Leonard Nimoy. The film is expected to hit cinemas on Christmas Day, 2008.

Ha ha, Simon Pegg. Interesting.
With J.J.Abrams name slathered over this instead of Brannan Braga & company, maybe it will be a good movie. Hopefully it will have that Star Trek feel that was all but dead with the last three TV series.

Some more interesting casting news:
Ryder To Play Spock's Mother
Hollywood actress Winona Ryder has signed up to star in the new Star Trek movie - as the mother of Mr. Spock. The Heathers star will join Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, British funnyman Simon Pegg as Scotty and Heroes actor Zachary Quinto as Spock for the 11th big screen outing of the cult TV show. It remains to be seen if Ryder will be playing the Vulcan mother of Spock, as initially reported by Variety. According to Star Trek lore, Spock's mother was human, played by Jane Wyatt in the original series and in one of the feature films. Directed by JJ Abrams, the film will focus on the early journey of the original Enterprise crew and is due for release in December next year.
