I'm surprised us horror fans don't have this one. You know what to do.
For me, Dawn. Lots of action, cool characters, great gore and a compelling storyline. Essential and legendary.

I would agree,Dawn or the Dead is his masterpiece,in whichever version you see {the US DVD set has all three versions, and they'll all good in different ways}. Maybe I like the long director's cut most,I liked spending more time with the characters. But great film, great concept, lots of social comment without over doing it,superb action { I think Romero really needs to be reaccessed as a master of action, look at the three way heroes/biker/zombie battle, some excellent dialogue, lots of sly humour which never detracts from the tension, and loads of gore. I didn't mind the remake, but it wasn't a patch on the original.
Second I would place Martin,a depressing film, but one of the most original and interesting studies of the vampire idea ever done on film. Knightriders also deserves a mention, hardly anyone seems to know it and it sounds very silly {modern-day knights on bikes} but it's a very clever and well achieved film.
Have yet to see Season of the Witch and There's Always Vanilla-are they as dreadful as some say? And how would people here list the Living Dead quartet in order of preferance? I would have Dawn {the best},than Land, than Night, than Day.

What Doctor said, as far as Dawn Of The Dead goes. My choice in the poll, too. I'm not a fan of Night, actually, but all the other Dead films I really like. The order of preference? Here it is --
1. Dawn Of The Dead 2. Day Of The Dead 3. Land Of The Dead 4. Night Of The Living Dead
I'm also one of those strange people who quite liked The Dark Half. Yes.

I think Dark Half is my top non-zombie choice, Bart. It's pretty good for a Romero movie that doesn't feature zombies, has some good gore (especially the end) and had a pretty decent plot. I liked it, but not above Dawn.
My choices:
Dawn, Land, Night, Day.

Did you guys notice our friend Quorth - perhaps Romero's biggest fan here - hasn't yet voted in the poll or expressed his thoughts on the Dead order? We're waiting, man... waiting...

Okay, I only just found this thread.
And it was a toss-up for me. Creepshow or Day of the Dead?
Yeah that's right. Dawn, for as much as I love that movie (I have the huge box set of it), isn't my favorite. Apparenltly, Romero prefers Day over Dawn as well.
Day of the Dead was a film I initially didn't care for. But, the second time I watched it, I loved it. The third time was, as they say, the charm. I mean, come on, it's got Bub!! The gore was the very best of all his Dead films--even better I thought, than Land of the Dead. And when you place the movie into the proper context--it's very intense. By proper context, I mean, you really kind of have to know what's happened before the movie starts, and then you understand the sheer tension of the characters. It also has some of the best dialog of the series. "I'm in charge of this monkey farm now, Frankenstein and I want to know--what the fuck you're doing with my time!!" and "Pretty fuckin's soon I'm gonna have to fuckin' knock off the fuckin' drinkin' because there won't fuckin' be any fuckin' left." There was roughly that many fucks...
I completely missed Creepshow until after I voted (dammit) otherwise I may have voted for that one. It's one of the most fun, dark, and creepy horror films out there--even the stuff that should be cheesy (like the constant comic book framing) had an air of malevolence about it--and the music, by god, that's some of the best music in any of Romero's works.
Martin, as some may know, I gave a 6/10--it was interesting, but needed a little more... something... to make it a classic. I can't quite put my finger on it.
I also recall enjoying The Dark Half and Monkey Shines--though it's been quite a while since I've seen them.
Bruiser, I highly recommend. It's such an unusual movie--and it has a very unique story.
And yes, I am aware that my email is "RomeroDawn," I think I came up with that during my Dawn vs. Day days--or it was right after I got that Dawn box set... I don't remember.

Oh, and you forgot Creepshow 2.
For Me:
Day of the Dead Dawn of the Dead Night of the Living Dead Land of the Dead Dawn of the Dead remake Night of the Living Dead remake
Dawn, Night, and Land are interchangable from time-to-time depending on somewhat fluctuating personal tastes. They're all such good movies.

Bruiser - yes. But Monkey Shines? Ummm... no. For me it completely didn't work as a film that would terrify or at least provide some good suspense, no.
Creepshow 2 wasn't directed by Romero, was it?

No, it's based on his ideas, but directed by Michael Gornick, a cinematographer.

No, it's based on his ideas, but directed by Michael Gornick, a cinematographer. Okay, Romero Produced Creepshow 2, didn't he? I could've sworn he directed it. Oh well. I was wrong. And now the world will end.

Yeah, he did. He did produce it, but didn't direct it. He was doing Monkey Shines at the time (like that one couldn't have waited)
