Just wondering what movie you guys prefer from Shyamalan...
I included his earlier less known works, although Im guessing that most will go for one of the latter four.
I also left out Stuart Little (Screenplay) because... Well because its my poll.
I havent seen the Village (Aint opened here yet) but I will.
Ive went for Unbreakable for 2 reasons.
#1 To me, out of his films (Not including the Village) this is easily the most original, and as a writer, I look at it and think... my god he mustve had balls. Because as a story, it must have been very wierd reading.
#2 Again out of his films, this is easily the most 'rewatchable'. This may be because unlike the sixth sense, its plot twist doesn't make the movie.

THE SIXTH SENSE. Very well written, acted & directed. Truly atmospheric, one of the all time great ghost movies, excellent plot twist that completely caught me off guard. Even knowing the twist, I am still completely enthralled by the film itself. I've liked all four of his "main" movies, to varying degrees, but this one is the standout for me.
As a side note: I think he's one of the few newer directors whose movies I truly look forward to, and who I feel is really trying to do something different with each film, as opposed to the usual Hollywood crap that gets churned out on a regular basis. He walks that fine line between commercial movie hitmaker and that independent spirit that a lot of movie fans claim to love, but never truly go out of their way to support. Love him or hate him he inspires conversation and debate with each new film. That's gotta count for something among us film lovers, right? (Okay, stepping off soapbox now.) ;D

Have to go with the Sixth Sense, the film that established Shyamalan as a truly talented filmmaker. I have yet to see Unbreakable, but as of now, Signs is a close second.

Unbreakable all the way! Not that the other ones are very far behind but for me it had the best twist (yes, Heineken, my friend: *I* didn't see it coming!) and the most interesting subject matter. Not to mention the presence of Bruce and Sam. AND I also agree with everything neptunes said about it. Stuart Little doesn't even come close.

I totally agree young Skywalker... (soz)
Seriously though, you're right in relation to his movies being somewhat different.
I really love his films, but he has an aura and Im guessing Im not the only one who thinks this, he is the type of director that you look forward to seeing a movie by and even if its not that good... you still like it and you cant explain why.
Much like Tarantino in that respect, even if you dont like it... you do.

I was just fixing to make that Tarantino comparison but Neptunes beat me to it. Night & Tarantino are about the only two directors that I eagerly await movies from...well, I gotta throw Kevin Smith in there too....but like you said, all their movies may not be great but there's always that little something, that little quirk, in each of them that defines them as a Night or Tarantino or Smith movie that makes them imminently watchable.

True. Though in fact, I await Tarantino's movies MORE eagerly than Shyamalan's... but both sure have something magnetic to them.

I picked Unbreakable. I just loved the themes in the movie, and some of the shots were just amazing. I can watch that movie and be like "wow, that is an awesome way to look at that." Doesn't happen very oftehn when I watch contemporary movies now. Very unique. Plus, I love Samuel Jackson.

Unbreakable wins the poll so far, then. As much as I love the movie, I wouldn't have predicted that.

Not so fast Bart. I picked The Sixth Sense. I didn't see this film in the theaters though kept asking myself each week as I looked at the Box office take, Why is this film still in theaters? Geez this films been pulling in at least $2 mill a week for about 6 months! I agree with Heineken also on his take of the film, I couldn't of said it better so I won't try. I will add though the musical score played a big role in the film. Very creepy. Unbreakable, now this, I didn't wait for a vid release after being blown away by The Sixth Sense I had to see M. Night Shyalaman's next film for sure. I did see a lot of teaser trailers to Unbreakable before the release. (You know the one where Willis is being asked a bunch of questions from the Doc) That sparked my curosity & going into the film I had a completely different outlook going in as I did going out. In other words, my theory of what the film would be like.. turned inside out & my expectations shattered. I also didn't expect a twist at the end of this one sinse M Night's first blockbuster had one. That unfortunately didn't completely ruin the picture for me, but it was an easy scapegoat imo for M. Night to end a film.. Ooo this is easy, I'll just end all my films with a twist. (I thought as I left the theater) Actor decision, hmm.. Nope I don't think M. Night should have casted Bruce Willis again even though Bruce was excellent in the film. M. Night quickly became a Work In Progress director in my mind, luckly the work is over & he is now progressing with his films.

Quorthon here, Quorthon thought The Sixth Sense would be crappy and predictable! Girlfriend at the time ridiculed Quorthon for not predicting the ending as he has so many times before for her crappy teeny-bopper films!
Unbreakable is Quorthon's pick as best M. Night movie!!! And to those who disagree!! An edict!! (haven't you seen it or something?)

Actually, it's tied.
I had this discussion with some friends a while back and had to go with The Sixth Sense over Unbreakable because they wouldn't allow me to have a tie (and right of them to do so, too!), so I chose The Sixth Sense basically for Haley Joel Osment.
Usually I like Spencer Treat Clark (see Mystic River and Galdiator--the best part of that film), but he didn't really do that hot of a job in this one, you know, like his other stuff ("Friends don't shoot friends..."). So I guess it was the kids.
In terms of Shyamalan, I think a lot of people didn't like Unbreakable as much as he hoped and it really got to him, because Signs wasn't the best thing out there (Roger Ebert's an idiot) and The Village was a horrid film. My problem with him is that he keeps trying to do the same thing as The Sixth Sense (because Unbreakable was TOTALLY different from Sixth Sense, and it was great that he did that) and it gets old after a while. Do something new, man!
